Loose Leaf Tea: Whole-Leaf Black, Green, Oolong, White & Herbals

Adagio's loose leaf tea collection spans more than 200 premium whole-leaf teas across every major category — black, green, oolong, white, herbal, chai, rooibos, matcha, pu-erh, and decaf — all sourced directly from artisan farmers without middlemen. Loose leaf tea brews from whole or large-cut leaves that expand fully in the cup, releasing a fuller range of flavor compounds and natural aromatics than the dust and fannings in standard teabags. From 15 cents a cup. New to loose leaf tea? Start with one of our tea starter sets, which include everything you need to brew your first great cup. Browse the full collection by category below.

What Is Loose Leaf Tea and Why Is It Better Than Teabags?

Loose leaf tea is made from whole or large-cut tea leaves rather than the ground-up dust and fragments packed into standard teabags. The difference matters because tea quality is determined almost entirely by the leaf — how much of it there is, how intact it is, and how much room it has to expand during steeping.

A whole tea leaf expands to roughly five times its dry volume when it hydrates in hot water, releasing the natural essential oils, flavor compounds, and aromatic molecules that make great tea complex and interesting. A teabag filled with fannings — the low-grade fragments left after whole leaves are processed — extracts faster but produces a one-dimensional cup that tastes of tannins rather than the tea itself. Adagio's loose leaf teas start at 15 cents a cup — comparable to premium teabags, measurably better in the cup.

Loose Leaf Tea Characteristics and Benefits

Loose leaf teas are made from the freshest premium tea leaves and botanical ingredients, hand-selected for maximum richness, cup color, and flavor. Tasting profiles range from hearty and rich to smooth, delicate, floral, spicy, or fruity — all depending on where they grow and how they are blended. Loose leaf teas are a vibrant source of natural antioxidants associated with heart health, skin health, and reduced inflammation. The whole-leaf format preserves those compounds more fully than teabag alternatives, delivering the tea's complete nutritional and flavor profile in every cup.

How to Brew Loose Leaf Tea

Brewing loose leaf tea takes less than five minutes from kettle to cup:

  1. Heat water to the right temperature — boiling (212°F) for black, herbal, and chai teas; 160–180°F for green and white teas. A variable temperature electric kettle removes the guesswork.
  2. Measure your tea — one teaspoon (2–3g) per 8oz cup. Adjust to taste.
  3. Steep for the right time — 3–5 minutes for black tea, 2–3 minutes for green and white, 5–7 minutes for herbal. Remove the infuser when done to prevent over-steeping.
  4. Enjoy — most loose leaf teas yield 2–3 quality steepings from a single measure of leaves.

How to Choose a Loose Leaf Tea

The fastest way to find the right loose leaf tea is to start with what you already like:

  • You drink black tea with milk — start with Scottish Breakfast or Irish Breakfast. Bolder and more complex than any breakfast teabag.
  • You drink Earl Grey — try Earl Grey Bravo for a more assertive bergamot, or Earl Grey Moonlight for a softer, creamier version.
  • You drink coffee — bold loose leaf black tea is the closest bridge. Yunnan Noir's natural chocolate notes make it a particularly strong coffee-to-tea transition.
  • You want something lighter — loose leaf green or white tea. Start with a flavored variety (Apricot Green, White Blueberry) if straight green feels unfamiliar.
  • You want no caffeine — loose leaf herbal or rooibos. Peppermint, chamomile, and Wild Strawberry hibiscus are the most approachable starting points.
  • You don't know where to start — a loose leaf tea sampler covers multiple categories in small portions, letting you discover your preference before committing to a full pouch.

Does Loose Leaf Tea Contain Caffeine?

It depends on the type. Our broad range of loose leaf teas includes black, green, oolong, pu-erh, and white teas — all of which contain varying levels of caffeine. Black tea has the most (40–70mg per 8oz cup), followed by oolong and green tea (25–45mg), and white tea the least (15–30mg) among true teas.

Most herbal teas are completely caffeine-free — chamomile, peppermint, hibiscus, rooibos, and the majority of wellness blends contain no caffeine at all. The exceptions are Yerba Mate and Toasted Mate, which are herbal ingredients that naturally contain caffeine. Our loose leaf tea offering also includes a full range of flavorful decaf teas — Decaf Chai, Decaf Earl Grey, and more — for anyone who wants full flavor without any caffeine.
