Tyrannosaurus rex, the only species of dinosaur widely known by more than the name of its genus, is most likely the most famous extinct animal of all time. Discovered in 1874 in Colorado, its fossils have been found all over western North America and have been examined intensely. T. rex may have been a scavenger, as its arms were practically vestigial, its teeth and jaws were strong enough to crush bone and its sense of smell was notoriously excellent.
