Jeanette MacDonald - Remembered as one half of "America's Singing Sweethearts" of movie musicals from the 1930's. (She was the soprano and Nelson Eddy was the baritone.) She began her career on Broadway at aged 16; where she spent the next ten years perfecting her craft and lovely voice. She was cast in her first musical motion picture at the age of 26, and success came quickly from there on out. Her movie star status was elevated in 1935 when she starred in the movie "Rose Marie" with newcomer Nelson Eddy (the baritone), and a soundtrack that garnered her two gold records. Jeanette was now a household name. Rose Marie was the highest grossing picture of 1935. (Indian Love Call -all old movie buffs know that song!) By 1938, MGM Studios cast Jeanette in their first Technicolor film; which was indicative of the clout she had in Hollywood. Jeanette had a solid career as an actress well into the 1940's. In the 1950's she was back on stage, playing summer stock theater and night clubs.
However, despite all of her success, she had been in poor health with a rheumatic heart since she was a child. In her personal life, she was married to fellow actor Gene Raymond for over 25 years until her death from a heart attack at age 61. Well liked and highly respected, the legacy of Jeanette MacDonald lives on through films and music, making her one of the eternal icons of American movies.
