Celebrate Imbolc with a tea to honor Brighid, the fire goddess, and welcome the return of the sun. Lambs will soon be birthed and ewes udders swell with milk. With fiery spices, bread for the holiday and blackberries, a favorite of the goddess.
By February, most of us are tired of the cold, snowy season. Imbolc reminds us that spring is coming soon, there are only a few more weeks of winter to go. The sun gets a little brighter, the earth a little warmer, and life is quickening within the soil. The name Imbolc originates from ‘i mbolg’, which translates as ‘in the belly’. This refers to livestock breeding--especially the pregnancy of ewes, one of the focal points of the celebration. Imbolc was associated with the goddess Brighid and festivals had rituals to welcome the spring, say farewell to the winter, ward against evil and promote wellbeing.
