Having a lifespan of up to 70 years, elephants are paraded as a beautiful species who have strong family bonds, intelligent minds, and astounding memory. Elephants live in tight matriarchal family groups, led by the oldest and often largest female in the herd who are able to guide their family to watering holes they remember from past travels. Like humans and other species, elephants distinctly display a variety of emotions and behaviors such as grief, joy, anger, and play. The greatest risks to their populations are habitat loss due to climate change and the poaching of elephants for ivory.
