Orangutans may be a semi-solitary species, but they still have some degree of a social system. The stronger and longer lasting relationships are between mothers and their young. Offspring tend to stick close to their mothers up until they are about 10 years before they reach an independent age. Orangutans are the largest arboreal animal on Earth and spend most of their lives in trees for travel, food, and rest. The greatest risks to orangutan populations are habitat loss due to massive deforestation for palm oil and other agricultural plantations, illegal logging, as well as hunting and illegal wildlife trade.
