Native to the tropical regions of Asia, the Butterfly Pea Flower is known for its strikingly deep blue color. The flower is used as a natural food coloring and is commonly used to tint rice dishes in Malaysia. In Thailand, a blue drink called "nam dok anchan" is sometimes consumed with a drop of sweet lime juice which turns the drink into a pink-purple color.

I thought I read that butterfly pea flowers needed to be boiled before consuming the tea from them...Is this still useable as a cold brew tea, or does it need to be hot brewed first then chilled?

“ I did a little research on Google and found that only the seeds, pods and roots are of concern for butterfly pea flowers, so the tea should be safe, even cold brewed. Here are a couple articles I found: https://teabreakfast.com/butterfly-pea-flower-tea-be ”

“ I thought the directions were to heat the water and add to the pitcher, which is what I did. I loved it. Though it didn't taste like mango. I did enjoy the flavor. No blue tongue either. ”

Is this not available in loose version? Also what are the ingredients? The description says 'blended with' so it sounds like there's more than 3 ingredients...? Lastly, what is mango 'essence?'
Thanks for any answers! Usually the descriptions

I accidentally used hot water to steep. Is this why my tea is more of a green color rather than blue?
Asked by Mary Mello
on July 18th, 2025
“ Hello Mary! The blue color comes from the butterfly pea flowers, which are pH indicators. If your water is more basic, the water will be greener; more neutral is bluer; and more acidic is purple! ”
