The Hippogryph was actually created by a Renaissance poet named Ludovico Ariostos for his epic poem Orlando Furiosos published in 1516. The first appearance of this beast was in Canto IV as such:
'No empty fiction wrought by magic lore,
But natural was the steed the wizard pressed;
For him a filly to griffin bore;
Hight hippogryph. In wings and beak and crest,
Formed like his sire, as in the feet before;
But like the mare, his dam, in all the rest.
Such on Riphaean hills, though rarely found,
Are bred, beyond the frozen ocean's bound.'
It is speculated that Ariosto was inspired to created the hippogryph based on Virgil's eigth Eclogue 'To Mopsus is Nysa given: What may we lovers not expect? Griffins now will mate with mares, and in the age to come the timid deer shall come with hounds to drink.'
Gryphons and horses were known to be mortal enemies which is why the misnomer that hippogryphs where a symbol of eternal or unbreakable love comes from, despite hippogryphs not being Greek at all, and in fact being Italian.
