Edaphosaurus is famous for being one of the earliest large amniote tetrapods. One of the earliest edaphosaurids was Ianthasaurus, a very small synapsid whose teeth were hardly useful. Many people confuse this genus with its distant carnivorous relative Dimetrodon, due to the large back sail, but Edaphosaurus was a gentle herbivore which was probably preyed on by Dimetrodon. Its back sail may have been used for camouflage, defense, temperature control, or sexual display.
