One of the ugliest animals ever to exist--I'm not going to lie. These ancient relatives of the armadillo were grazers living in South and Central America, and about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Unlike turtles, they could not withdraw their beaver-like heads into their bony shell; they did have a protective cap on their scalp, however. Their shell was made up of over a thousand thick plates called osteoderms, and each species' shell pattern was unique. How cute.
