Jack, also know as Subject Zero, was the primary subject of a Cerberus experiment at Pragia's Teltin facility. They were tasked with enhancing biotic potential in humans regardless of the cost. What they created was an extremely powerful and pissed off biotic that eventually got free and wreaked some havoc before being caught and put into cryostasis on a prison ship. Jack has had a hard life but that's only made her tougher and it's made her appreciate the bond she formed with the Normandy crew.
