The Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) is a small, brown North American bird known for its beautiful, flute-like song, often called the "American nightingale". It's identified by its grayish-brown back, spotted white breast, and contrasting reddish tail, which it often flicks while nervously raising and lowering it. A quiet bird that forages alone in forest undergrowth, it's the only spotted thrush commonly seen in winter across much of the U.S.
