Hecate is a deeply complex goddess, associated with night, wisdom, psychic ability, death, healing, and the spirit world, among other things. Often portrayed as one or all aspects of the Triple Goddess, she is most frequently depicted as the Crone or symbolised by the waning moon. Hecate is a psychopomp, guiding the spirits of the dead beyond the veil, and she guards the threshold between living and dead. As such, she is often called upon for protection from spirits, ghosts, and unfriendly spells, as well as during divination. Her creatures are wild dogs and crows, and she is often venerated at crossroads or in graveyards. As a goddess of night, Hecate is best evoked after dark has fallen, and in an area lit only by candles or torches. Traditional fferings to Hecate include lavender, pomegranates, garlic, mint, honey cake, wine, currants, and cinnamon.
