Sencha Overture (煎茶) is a steamed green tea from the Shizuoka prefecture of Japan, harvested in the early summer — the second flush, when the year's more mature growth delivers a richer, deeper, more intensely vegetal character than the delicate first-flush Sencha Premier. It produces a rich, brothy texture with a clean, very refreshing green aroma: sweet flavour reminiscent of tender steamed vegetables and fresh seaweed, with a rounded finish that coats the palate.

This is the Sencha for those who seek the full, authentic depth of Japanese green tea — the grassy, vegetal, oceanic register that Japanese tea culture most prizes and that many Western drinkers discover and then return to for the rest of their tea-drinking lives. Our Sencha Overture has a classic Sencha flavour, perfect for fans of all things "green." Brew at 165°F for 2–3 minutes, and you'll have a delicious preview of all the good things Japanese tea has to offer — an overture to the world of Japanese green tea.

Lore

An overture is an instrumental opening for shows like ballets, operas, and musicals. Starting in the 17th century, they carried all the way through to the popular movie musicals of the 1950s and beyond. While some overtures are composed as stand-alone pieces, they can also be used to introduce themes, melodies, or dramatic elements of the piece that will follow. Such is the case with our Sencha Overture. Take a sip, and you'll have a delicious preview of all the good things to come.
