Our full-leaf Irish Breakfast combines hearty black teas from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Assam (India) to get your morning off to a bright start. As its name implies, the Irish Breakfast black tea blend is an ideal accompaniment to a morning meal. It seamlessly blends the citrusy notes of a high-grown Ceylon with the malty underscore of a pungent Assam. Spicy and jammy aroma on the leaf, malty and deep flavor with a brisk and 'buzzy' mouthfeel. Rounded sweetness in the finish. May be enjoyed plain or with a drop of milk. Irish Breakfast is one of Adagio's most popular teas.

Ingredients & Lore
blended with assam melody tea & ceylon sonata tea
Top of the morning is a salutation which offers the "best of the morning". There's a bit of mystery as to where the term comes from though, which could be referring to the "top" as the best, as the beginning of the morning, or, our personal favorite, as a nod to cream, which rises as the "best" to the top of fresh milk. While the phrase isn't commonly used by Ireland natives today (as the second highest per-capita tea drinkers in the world) their favorite blend clearly is.

I found a pouch of my tea that I didn't know I had. It's never been opened and have had it for a few years now. Is it still going to be fresh and still taste ok? Thanks

“ This is probably my favorite tea hot, but it is completely wrong on my palate when iced. I think Oolong and Keeman make better iced teas. My favorite iced tea from Adagio is Peach Oolong--my family beg me to make it.

What is full-leaf Irish Breakfast tea, and how is it made?
Full-leaf Irish Breakfast tea is a robust blended black tea crafted to deliver a strong, full-bodied cup that pairs well with hearty morning fare. Irish Breakfast is a blend of teas sourced from classic black-tea regions, especially Assam teas from India, which provide a deep malty backbone, complemented by black tea from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) to add brightness and balance. The result is a bold, brisk blend that has long been associated with Irish tea culture. To make Irish Breakfast tea, tea producers first process the raw leaves — withering, rolling, oxidizing and drying them into finished black tea — before blending specific proportions to achieve the desired character. In traditional blends the Assam component forms the core, lending rich maltiness and strength, while the Ceylon teas help round out the flavor and contribute complexity. Once blended, the loose leaves are packaged for brewing as a loose-leaf tea or bagged for convenience.
What does full-leaf Irish Breakfast tea taste like?
Full-leaf Irish Breakfast tea brews into a bold, robust cup that’s distinctly stronger and more malty than many other black tea blends. It’s typically dominated by Assam tea, which gives it a rich, malty backbone with a deep amber to reddish-brown colour, and is complemented by Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka to balance the profile. Because of this emphasis on strong, full-bodied leaves, Irish Breakfast tea tends to have a pronounced, hearty flavour with malty sweetness, a brisk character, and a satisfying depth that stands up well to additions like milk and sugar. Some drinkers also notice hints of caramel, spice or a slightly earthy edge, but the defining quality is its full-strength, invigorating presence, making it a classic choice for morning brewing.
Is Irish Breakfast tea high in caffeine?
Yes. Irish Breakfast tea generally contains a moderate to relatively high amount of caffeine because it is made from black tea leaves, often with a strong Assam component that tends to have higher caffeine than many other teas. An 8-ounce (about 240 ml) cup of Irish Breakfast typically contains around 40 mg to 90 mg of caffeine, though the exact amount varies with the specific blend, leaf grade, steeping time and water temperature.
Because black tea in general has more caffeine than green or white teas but less than coffee, Irish Breakfast tea offers noticeable stimulation and alertness without reaching the higher caffeine levels found in a typical cup of brewed coffee.
How should loose leaf Irish Breakfast tea be brewed for the best flavor?
To brew loose-leaf Irish Breakfast tea for the best flavor, treat it like you would other strong black teas so you get a full-bodied, rich cup without bitterness. Start with fresh, cold water brought to a full boil (about 212 °F / 100 °C), since black tea extracts best at high temperature. Use about one rounded teaspoon of loose leaves per 8-ounce cup of water and place the leaves in an infuser, teapot or directly in the cup. Pour the boiling water over the leaves and let them steep for about three to five minutes, tasting around the three-minute mark to find your preferred strength; Irish Breakfast is hearty and can handle the longer end of that range to develop its malty, brisk character without turning overly bitter. Once steeped, remove the leaves so the tea doesn’t over-extract, and enjoy it as is or with a splash of milk and sweetener if you like.
What are the health benefits of drinking Irish Breakfast tea?
Drinking Irish Breakfast tea, like other black teas made from Camellia sinensis leaves, may offer several potential health benefits that are tied to the bioactive compounds found in black tea, especially antioxidants such as polyphenols, theaflavins and catechins. These plant compounds help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can reduce oxidative stress and support long-term health. Regular tea consumption has been linked with heart health benefits, including associations with healthier blood pressure and cardiovascular risk profiles, and some research suggests a possible connection with a modestly reduced risk of stroke and heart disease when tea is part of a balanced diet.
Because Irish Breakfast tea contains caffeine and L-theanine, it can also help improve alertness, focus and mental clarity, providing a gentle energy lift without the stronger stimulant effect of coffee. Additionally, black tea’s antioxidants may support healthy digestion and gut microbiome balance, and some studies suggest they could play a role in healthy blood sugar regulation and metabolic function.
