The full Moon in August is called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most easily caught during this part of summer. It is also called the Black Cherries Moon, the Ricing Moon, or the Mountain Shadows Moon. It embodies the final days of summer and signals the beginning of harvest season.
