Pu-Erh Dante Customer Reviews

A rare aged, fermented tea from Yunnan, China, pu'erh stands apart with its uncommonly soft earthy flavor and woodsy tones. Clean, damp forest aroma, dried mushrooms, leather, and earth. A slight sweetness of figs or dates yields a mellow, grounding cup.

Nice rich flavor. It's almost like a coffee it is so rich.

★★★★★

I have had many pu-ehr teas in my day. I have to update my review. This one is extremely good. Very well balanced with flavors from plant and flavors from the earth. I will end this review with a word of warning to those who have never tried pu-ehr. You either love it, or you will hate it. It's that interesting and different.

★★★☆☆

I think pu erh is just not for me... I was constantly reminded of mushrooms as I drank. It was too 'earthy' for me. Not undrinkable, but not my first choice.

Good 'basic' black tea. Earthy, but not over powering. Would make a good substitute for Earl Grey for those who are not partial to bergamot. Perfect with a good book on a rainy afternoon.

Full bodied and robust. Flavor was strong but not too overwhelming for a pu erh tea

★★★★★

Great quality, it was great to enjoy the nutty/earthy flavor I expect from a good Pu-Erh tea!

★★★★★

I've added this to my regular rotation as one of the only non-greens I'll drink frequently. It's smooth and interesting. The smell takes a little getting used to.

★★★★★

Having never had a pu erh tea prior to this, I was quite delighted. Smooth, rich, and a nice change of pace. Even the hubby liked it!

★★★★☆

a nice, earthy, black tea. different from any I've tried.

★★★★☆

Pu erh dante is a fermented tea, so you have to know going in that you will get a stronger, earthier tea. I personally like this tea, but I like strong teas. It is not my every day tea, but I enjoy it when there is a chill in the air, or when I sit down with a Sudoku puzzle. :)

★★★★☆

This is my first pu erh. I had no idea what to expect when I ordered this tea, even after reading tons of reviews, and I'm still surprised every time I drink a new cup. The first time I had it plain, with nothing added, and it made me think more of broth than tea - not bad, but certainly strange, and the fishiness was a bit too much. Next I took a suggestion from an earlier review and rinsed the leaves prior to steeping, which helped. Then I started experimenting, and I was absolutely shocked at how versatile this tea is. That sounds super dramatic, but seriously - when I first tried it, I thought it would be disgusting sweetened. But then I tried it with a honey, and then with a small amount of sugar and cream, and it brought out the flavors in a total different way (I could finally pick up on the 'sweetness of figs or dates and a slight creamy flavor' mentioned in the description). Even then I thought that surely it would taste awful if I let it get cold and...no, it was somehow still good.
Conclusion: This tea is not what you expect it to be, and needs to be experimented with a whole lot before you pass judgement on it. It's definitely an acquired taste - one that I haven't quite acquired yet, but that I want to.
(Also, that high level of caffeine thing? Not a joke. Caffeine usually does nothing to me, and yet I was up for hours past my bedtime after making the mistake of drinking this in the afternoon.)

Nice, earthy, and stady flavor. Produces good cup of tea to enjoy on its own on windy afternoon. This tea is for a real tea lover. Do not par it with food.Strong, slightly smoky and powerful taste for a real strong tea lovers. Makes quite assertive, but rememberable impression.

★★★★★

Very strong and rich, this dark tea is extremely complex. Earthy and delicious, might be too strong for those who prefer something more subtle. There is a fishy aftertaste, but it definitely isn't unpleasant, which is surprising.

★★★★★

I can definitely understand why some people wouldn't like this tea, but if it holds up to my college student brewing (throw a tea bag in a water bottle and take it out when you finish the bottle), it may become my new all time favorite tea.

★★★★☆

Try it, one of my fav. Super rich and overall great tea.

★★★★★

Love this tea. I am new to puerhs and this was a good start.
Update 2016- bought it again and it's still fantastic , I got 4 steeps out of a teaspoon. Very worth it

★★★★★

It is my 'go to' morning tea. It'd be hard to find something I'd like better! I'm definitely hooked.

★★★☆☆

It brews up really dark but it's a very very mild taste. I brewed this as my morning tea (I usually drink Irish or English breakfast) that I drink with cream and sugar and it didn't really taste like anything other than cream and sugar. Going to try it again without the cream and see if that helps.
At least there is literally no tannic undertones or weird aftertaste!

I was prepared for earthy, but this straight up smells rotten. not my taste at all.

★★★☆☆

To me this was comparable to drinking mud as a child. There is indeed an earthly taste that sweetner cannot improve. It was not good or hot, but it is an aquired taste.

Great tea, not any worse than the pu erh pearls.

★★☆☆☆

When brewed, this tea has a bit of a fishy smell that (for me, at least) overrides any other flavors. Not a fan.

I did not care for this pu erh at all! Very flat and did not taste like pu erh. Will not be ordering again.

★★★★★

pu erh tea is a big favorite in my home, I will be ordering this tea for one of my regular rotations

★★★★☆

This was my first venture into Pu-erh tea. My first cup had just a hint of the earthiness they mention in the description, and it was certainly a pleasant cup. I tried infusing a second cup from the leaves, and got the most pleasant surprise. It was much bolder than the first, and quite an adventure. I'm very happy with this tea. Only reason it doesn't get five stars is that it takes two infusions to get the full flavor from the leaves

This is the first pu erh tea I've ever tried, and I can't say it's my favorite. The tea itself tastes earthy, and the smell reminds me of horses.

★★★★☆

The Pu Erh pearls are one of my favorite teas. Nice and mellow. So, I decided to give another of the Pu Erh teas a try. Like the pearls, this one is mellow. However, it is a lot more earthly tasting than the pearls and I get a smokey aftertaste. Overall, pretty good. But, after I finish this bag I'll probably stick to the pearls.

This is a great every day tea. It has a wonderful earthy flavor and is so smooth.

EDIT: I was reading up on teas on a Chinese tea website, and they had a page on how to brew pu'erh the traditional way, which made me curious to read more on the web before trying. To lessen the fish flavour (absent in very high-grade pu'erh teas), 'wash' the tea by pouring boiling water over it, twice, or by 'steeping' two pots of tea for 30 seconds each, then tossing the water before steeping a real cup. Much improved the flavour, and the smell.

I absolutely loved the flavour, but that said, I did have to struggle a bit to get over the fishy smell. It does not taste fishy at all, but it does smell strongly of fish scales when you hold up your cup to sip. This would probably not be such a problem for me if i wasn't the sort who likes to inhale the aroma of my tea as I drink. I will continue to drink this tea because I love the flavour. I just need to get over the fishy smell. :)

If you can get by the smell, its a good tea for sure. Its smooth and rich. Would order again.

Lovely slightly floral quality at the time and temp I brewed it. I really like this for a gentle pick-me-up.

Okay. So I know that this is a tea that a lot of people love. That is great. But to me, it tasted just like wet leather smells. That might be great for some people, but I just couldn't make myself drink it.

Quality tea. Very earthy. Works well for multiple steepings

I wasn't sure what to expect from a Pu Erh tea but this was very nice. A bit less 'earthy' than I was expecting, but still bold and mellow at the same time. The leaves do hold up to multiple infusions without getting bitter or starting out too bold/overwhelming. I would call this a coffee drinkers tea. Also good iced!

★★★★★

For the record I am biased. I am obsessed with pu erhs. Yes, it smells like a horse barn, and tastes like one too, but in a mildly sweet, earthy, fresh, hay, outdoor, nature way. It's delightful earthiness warms my soul through out the day whether I'm at work or home being productive. It's perfect for multiple steeps- just let it steep longer each time. The extra time is a preference, not an exact science, and you can't really over steep this tea, in my opinion. It always taste smooth, earthy and never acidic. I've been a long time earl grey fan, but can't drink it before I eat or have multiple cups without it upsetting my stomach. Pu erh dante, however, settles my stomach, even first thing in the morning. Bonus its high in caffeine but still subtle and slow building. I've been told its often a coffee drinkers favorite tea.

Has a deep rich earthy flavor on the first steep and a mild nutty flavor on the second and third steeps. I always include this tea on my orders here.

I guess pu erh isn't my thing. It was waaay too earthy, it tasted like I was drinking hot mud.

★★★★☆

When I read the reviews that said this has an earthy taste, I had to try it. I love anything with an earthy, musty taste. It's so rich and meaty, almost. And, yes, I detected a subtle mushroom quality, which I loved. An interesting cup of tea!

★★★★★

Very woodsy. It reminds me of the rain forsts of the Olympic penninsula.

★★★★★

Truly earthy and rich, this tea is also light at the same time. It reminds me of hay and having taken years of riding lessons with my undying love of horses, this tea is awesome! No matter how strong you brew it, it never gets bitter and you can really dilute it with water.

I just really like this pu erh. It's with me all day, every day. If you discover inadvertently that you are not a pu erh person, I will be happy to trade you for the citrus mate that is feeling pretty bad about itself right now in my cabinet. :)
It is not for everyone, but at least try a sample. And try it more than once.
