Brew as recommended (low temp). Wow! A kick of great flavor. I was thoroughly surprised. My first time trying mate but this will be a regular for us now!
Brazilian toasted mate with a mellower, yet full-bodied character. Toasty, with a comforting chicory note, and hints of tobacco.

Brew as recommended (low temp). Wow! A kick of great flavor. I was thoroughly surprised. My first time trying mate but this will be a regular for us now!
Vaguely nutty with a slight bitterness similar to coffee. I didn't necessarily enjoy it on its own but see great potential as a base for morning blends.
Unfortunately, this tea missed the mark for me. It tasted way too smokey for my taste and my husband wasn't a fan, either. The mocha nut mate is definitely the better mate compared to this.
The mate is interesting. It's not tea, it's not coffee. Tastes more like coffee, but not really. Maybe coffee with chicory, but not quite that either. I've tried it straight, with varying amounts of milk, from just a splash to all milk (no water). The milk doesn't mellow the taste, but does change it a small amount. The brewing temperature doesn't make for a hot cup of mate, even with a pre-warmed cup. I have put the brewed mate into the microwave a zapped it for 60 seconds to increase. That seems to give me a hot drink without burning the mate. YMMV.
Nice for drinking daily. It has that little bit of smoky / nutty flavor that I like.
I just wasn't a fan... I plan to mix it with a tea that has a little spice added to it.
Great mate. Definitely my go to when I need a good pick me up in the mornings.
I first tasted Toasted Mate as a gift sample and instantly fell in love with the toasty warm nutty and slightly malty complex flavours. I love this tea straight as a cozy accompaniment to started my Zoom mornings. The robust but smooth flavor along with the caffeine kick is perfect for mornings. I have enjoyed discovering new ways to also make this a perfect Toasted Matte latte with almond coconut milk and vanilla nibs. Perfecto!
On the positive end this tea will keep you up if you need a caffeine boost. I drank it late at night by mistake and was up for hours more! Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy the flavor. I can’t figure out what it tastes like comparatively, but it’s not something I would like to have again. I’d also like to add the flavor is much better with honey.
I like this best in blends. Good flavor and what I wanted
This tea had a very ashy taste that reminded me of cigarettes. It did have a slight coffee taste and smell, and I'm sure with enough sugar and cream this would make for a good latte. I wouldn't recommend it plain.
This is nice, a little plain. A very average mate. Simple, not complex. Can be used as a base to other teas perhaps. Not bad, just a little boring alone.
I'd never tried any maté before, much less a toasted one. I liked the nutty, slightly smoky flavor. It made me think of a cross between Genmaicha & Kukicha.
I'm usually a coffee drinker first thing in the morning, but on the days that coffee feels like too much acidity I go for a cup of this! I didn't realize quite how big the bag I ordered was, but I'm glad I did. This tea has a pleasant chocolatey nuttiness to it that is wonderful first thing in the morning. It's like a light mocha.
It was too strong at first. I used half the recommended amount and shortened the steep time snd ur was better.
Nice toasted flavor. Was a good coffee replacement.
This has a good smell and a basic flavor, I prefer it in the Jump Start blend it's very complementary to those flavors.
Perfect for that morning pickup without the coffee. do pay attention to recommended temp/time
It’s official. I need to move to Brazil cause this tea is giving me life right now! So delicious.
Stranger flavor than the regular but still has that mate kick
Really nice daily drinker. Good with or without sweetener. Has that little bit of smoky/nutty flavor that I like in coffee.
Woody flavor, not much toastiness to my tongue. Reminded me of roibos or an oolong.
I bought this as an alternative to coffee since I tend to enjoy my morning tea without any mix-ins and the amount of cream and sugar needed to enjoy decent coffee is just more unhealthy than I can justify. This tea also benefits from managing to be cheaper and more enjoyable all around so if your looking for a caffeine alternative and you enjoy smoke-y tobacco-y flavors this is just a good tea.
I really like this tea! It does not have as much of the bold roasted flavor as I expected when it was compared to coffee, but it's more grassy, smooth, and subtle. The scent reminds me of autumn leaves.
Strong but not bitter. A very good pick me up and alternative to coffee.
Good enough on its own, toasty and earthy, but even better with some peppermint and anise.
Hmmm. I’m starting to think mates aren’t my thing. I’m not really into this tea, and I wasn’t into the mango mate either. I do really like the samurai mate, but it does have a lot going on with extra flavors.
I ended up frothing some vanilla creamer and making a mate late with this one and I was impressed with how it came out! Probably wouldn’t repurchase because it’s not really my style, but I would drink it again.
Mates just aren't my jam, but I do really enjoy the earthiness. I could see myself mixing this.
I like it. It's not my favorite, but still a nice change. I added two cubes sugar (I always add one or two to all teas) It was fine without milk, but I preferred it with. Has a pleasant nutty taste.
I rarely drink mate, but I really enjoyed my cup of 'Toasted mate' today. It smelled very nice and I liked its gentle flavor.
I never tried Mate before but this was so irresistibly yummy, i immediately bought every flavor of Mate Adagio has to try.
I can see why people like it, but I do not. It smells like coffee and tasted like molasses. Not a fan. I prefer a smoother, lighter drink.
Reminds me of coffee.
It’s delicious and I like that it brews at a lower temp so I can enjoy it right away.
I never knew. This toasted mate is just as good as English breakfast tea (the good stuff) in the morning. And with a bit of cream and sugar it’s pure bliss. You got a sale.
I have never had an unmixed mate. I enjoyed this one. Nothing remarkable about it but it was nice and gave me a needed morning kick.
I'm not a big coffee person but this tea reminded me very much of coffee. It wasn't bad, by any stretch, but it wasn't for me, either.
Per Jim R.'s directions, I wet the leaves with cool water while my kettle was heating, poured out the rinse water, then steeped the toasted mate leaves for 5 minutes at 160 F. (My kettle goes as low as 150 F, but it overshoots, so the temp is always a little higher than advertised immediately after heating.) This has a pleasant smokiness to it that is more understated than that of lapsang souchong. The grassy mate flavor is still there, but more as an undertone than as the first thing you taste. The color reminds me very much of pu-erh, but again, the flavor is much milder and reminiscent almost of Chinese grass jelly (if you've ever had that). I like this!
This was not my favorite tea. It had a slight nutty coffee like flavor.
I'm a big coffee drinker, and this tasted like watered down coffee. I'm not sure if it was because I didn't steep it long enough (I was worried the water was too hot), but while it was drinkable, I wouldn't chose this over coffee or a caffeinated tea.
Reviewing purely on flavor, this tea was excellent. The leaves produced a strong earthy flavor, and can be reused multiple times. As a bonus, the low brewing temperate allows for immediate consumption -- no burned tongues here!
On a side note, for some reason mates, even when sipped slowly, make me very dizzy. For that reason alone, I will not be purchasing this one.
It tastes like coffee. I hate coffee. It was part of the communitea box, and I would rate it 1 star, but I assume it is good for those who like mate, I just wanted to be sure that those who drink tea because coffee is disgusting know Do Not Want.
I guess it’s really not my preference if I am going to be drinking tea. It does have a resemblance to a weaker coffee so if I wanted something resembling coffee I would just make coffee.
Did not like. Even knowing that I had no leaves in the water, it still tasted like there were. I even tried adding milk to it and it couldn’t be saved.
Toasted mate has a unique taste that you either love or hate. I usually have it blended with other things, such as in Corran Horn Expanded Universe fandom flavor. I sampled this Tea as part of the CommuniTEA September box.
I did not like this tea. I sipped it plain, then added sweetener, and did not like it either way. I dumped out the cup. Ew.
It was a good base tea but was lacking in flavor a bit for me. A little something to turn up the volume would have been nice.
I thought I would like this. I was a mate drinker years ago but I sadly found it disappointing.
I can't decide how I feel right now, the aftertaste is that of... mud and tree bark. I am not a fan.
1st try: sweetened with white sugar
2nd try: white sugar and almond milk
The second round was immensely better. Still had after taste of tree bark... but the almond milk masked the mud taste.
I don't honestly have any strong impressions of this one. It's a little coffee-ish, a little bitter, but not bad
