I really tried hard to like this one. I had a good 'tea' friend try it as well and we both agree the tobacco smell and flavor is a turn off. Sorry.

It’s toasted mate, what more can you say? If you’ve never had toasted mate before recommend trying. I prefer the mocha nut mate over this and will probably just buy that once I’m out of this.

Rich, decadent and flavorful. I love the depth of the flavor notes. I will definitely buy this one again.

I liked the regular yerba mate, so I was excited to try this one too. It’s similar, of course, but different enough to stand on its own. I feel the “earthy/grassy” flavor of the plain mate is a bit more muted in this one, giving way to a gentle smokiness that reminds me ever so slightly of coffee. Overall I feel like this might be milder than the regular, and therefore might lend itself nicely to blends, but it certainly stands on its own. I’m struggling to decide which of the two I like better!

Bold and eye opening. Perfect mixed with a flavored black tea for the weekend warrior, or an herbal infusion to help mellow it out!

I enjoyed having mate today; it was a nice change of pace. I brewed two flavorful steeps from the 2g of earthy scented tea leaves in my CT packet. I slipped the chopped mate leaves into a paper filter for ease of prepping. I awakened the mate for 20 seconds with a small dousing of cool water, then added the balance of 10 oz. at 165*F for a 5 min. brew. The liquor was a beautiful golden brown with a mild earthy scent much like the dry tea.

I could sip plain but added a bit of agave to sweeten and elevate the toasty nut like flavor. As the mate cooled a few coffee notes came through too. Resteeped another 6 oz. that had a similar taste. I find this tea pleasantly energizing with no jittery effects. It's especially wonderful in blends adding some grounding with its earthy flavor.

This was a very strong tea and tasted too much like an old burned pot of coffee. No thanks! 160 F x 4 min.

I followed Jim’s steep method on this with the cool water and then steeping with 160° water for 5 mins (and 3 mins on subsequent steps at a slightly higher temp). Love the toasty flavor and I didn’t get jittery even with multiple cups throughout the day, unlike when I overdo it with black tea. It doesn’t taste like tea or coffee to me, but has wonderful earthy flavors. I like mate, but it can be an acquired taste if you’re new to it. This is definitely a good one to start with if you like darker teas and toasty flavors.

This certainly wasn’t what I was expecting for this tea. It has a light smoky taste and a hint of a malty taste, but that’s about it. I really like Mocha Nut Mate but this isn’t at all like that. This is just personal preference. If you like smoky teas, you will probably like this one.

I wasn’t able to drink this due to high heart rate from anxiety today, but I e had it before. It’s nice, but I feel like it is lacking in a strong flavor note, which causes it to be pretty…basic. It’s a good addition to other blends, but It doesn’t really excite me on its iwn

This was a well enough drink. I would rate it as a good but not great. I love nutty flavor drinks and this one seems to give off a natural nutty flavor that was delicious.

This has been a hard tea to decide how to rank. I personally did not care for the tea - I followed Jim's direction to 'wake' the mate, and then tried a second steep to come to a conclusion, and I conclude it is not for me. Perhaps not being a coffee drinker either impacts my enjoyment of the flavor - but not one I'd buy or trade for!

Mate is a flavour that can go either way depending on a lot of factors, but this one was pleasant enough and, based on Jim's preparation help, more basic enough that it didn't have much to bog it down. It was nutty and earthy and just sliiiighty sweet on it's own. Added a little dark agave to bring up that earthiness and nuttiness and it was a pleasant sip. Not too heavy or light - just right.

Maybe because I loathe coffee, but I intensely disliked this. To me it tastes the way the urine from my patients’ catheters smells. Not even sweetener or cream could save this and it went down the drain. I don’t mind it in blends, but by itself? Yuck

This to me had very little taste at all, not even a tea taste except a rubbery aftertaste. Not for me!

This tea had a lot of earth and toasty notes that I enjoyed, but there was just something about it that was just meh to me. Like other mate teas, this has a coffee-like quality to it but for some reason it just didn't work well here to me. I also got a slightly smokey note like other reviews mentioned, but it's much more subtle than everything else going for it.

Jan 25 - Toasted Mate tea
> Roasted, very slightly sweet aroma dry. No bitterness. A toasted nut flavor, no sweetness, almost comes across as a single note. Addition of sugar and milk doesn't expand on the flavor or even really enhance it, but subdues it significantly, so that it tastes more like a toasted, slightly nutty milk instead of a tea. I can tell this is good quality, but am unsure the flavor is quite for me. I don't exactly dislike it, but it doesn't do much for me, either. Seeing what others say about subsequent brewing potentially deepening the flavor, I might make a second brew of it and see if that changes.

Made a second brew, and it tastes about the same to me. I don't actively dislike it, but it doesn't quite tickle my palette as much as other teas do.

This is similar to green coffee. I was not a fan as I get heart palpitations and migraines from green coffee.

This wasn't as bad as I feared. I only made 2 oz. of liquid. I had to use 170 degree water rather than 150 since I don't have a setting that low on my electric kettle. Besides, I know that in blends, mate is often steeped at the temperatures of white or green tea. I have an instant read thermometer somewhere, but I didn't want to prolong what I expected to be a useless experiment. The mate smelled like a burnt paper bag in the packet. Ugh. I went with a 3 minute steep figuring I didn't need to drink a lot of caffeine at the moment (shift work means nap time soon) or drink a really intense burnt paper bag! The liquid was a lot less strong than I expected. I *COULD* drink this unflavored if I needed to. Still, that doesn't mean I *WANT* to-- it wasn't that tasty to me. I've tried and liked some Mocha Nut Mate and Yerba Mate blends, and I might have tried Spiced Mate in a blend but don't recall for sure. Nonetheless, I don't think any mate is destined to be my drink of choice straight on a regular basis.

I'm not a huge fan of mate to begin with, but I don't mind a sip here and there once in a while, I usually find the flavor fine, but the caffeine too high. This toasted version really tested me! Phew, what funk! As they say, it's not my cup of tea...

I am not a huge fan of mate on it's own but I do like it for a kick in blends. Having said that, I do think that the toasting improved the flavor and made this mate more enjoyable.

When I opened my CommuniTEA packet, I noted the nutty aroma of the toasted mate. I steeped the tea for 3 minutes and it produced a deep golden cup of tea. The taste is very robust and nutty. The chicory notes come through very strongly. There is also a hint of sweetness to it. I really enjoy mate, so I think it is a great tea and coffee alternative!

This tea’s flavor reminds me so strongly of dandelion I had to double check the ingredients! Under the dandelion it’s pleasantly toasty - a nice alternative to my favorite hojicha when I’m looking for that roasted taste!

Toasted mate is rich, complex, and entirely its own flavor. If you love sweet, nutty, and very powerful flavors for your morning pick-me-up, give this one a try! Toasted mate is one of my favorite ingredients for a blend, but stands strong on its own.

A middle of the road tea for me. I like the earthy toastiness but if I wanted this flavor profile I think I would just go with hojicha. I will finish the cup but will most likely only have with CommuniTea. More of a 3.5 for me.

I like the toasty, earthy flavor of mate. Very enjoyable flavor with a high caffeine kick. I drink mate sparingly as it really does pack a jolt for me.
1/25/2023 - I can sip a bit of mate if it's mixed with another tea, but alas...I can no longer sip this toasted loveliness by itself. Just too much of a caffeine jolt for me...my body does not react well to mate.

In the bag: The finely chopped, stiff, tan-to-dark-brown leaves of mate. A few finely chopped brown stems.

On the nose (pre-steep): The scent of dried grass.

On the nose (post-steep): Scent is similar to pre-steep. Barest hint of coffee.

On the tongue: Tastes like a light roast coffee. None of the astringency, however, that accompanies our bean-based cousin. Slightly buttery mouthfeel.

Opinion: A pleasant tea, though not one that I will crave. It gives an excellent impression of coffee, of which I'm a fan. I appreciate its lack of astringency compared to the black stuff. But when thinking of all the delicious tea flavors the world has to offer, this doesn't make it to the top of my list.

Preparation: 4.5 min @ 160 ℉, no sweetener

UPDATED from 9/8/21: “Oh Yeah! Sssssssssmokin!” The tea steeps into a beautiful amber color, however it is too smokey for me. At first, I am put off by the smokiness, but I add 1/2 teaspoon of stevia sweetener for 13 oz, and the flavors meld beautifully. As the tea cools it gets yummier. It steeps very well a second time and I am enjoying it. There is a nutty flavor and creaminess that lingers long after the sip. The high caffeine is the only negative I can say about it now. (5 min @ 150ºF + sweetener).

A roasty toasty flavored cup of energy. Delicious roasted nut flavored cup of tea. This is a nice twist to regular mate tea, really enjoy the savory taste and the lift in energy it gives without that unpleasant feeling caffeine can give. It is a nice cup to have in replacement of morning coffee.
