This one is just a tad bitter. But I like the toasted taste. I find a little Tea Sugar calms the bitter.
Brazilian toasted mate with a mellower, yet full-bodied character. Toasty, with a comforting chicory note, and hints of tobacco.

This one is just a tad bitter. But I like the toasted taste. I find a little Tea Sugar calms the bitter.
Tastes like watered down, poorly brewed coffee, with a bit of a smoky aftertaste. Really interesting and worth trying, but definitely not for me! I love the mocha nut mate, though, so maybe I just prefer mate when mixed with other things.
Pleasant toasted flavor that's not too light and not too strong. Cozy without being too heavy. Brewed well in my Adagio metal tea filter.
If you like leather and tobacco then this is perfect for you. It was worth a try but probably wont grab a second time.
Andrea: So far, I've only brewed it straight as a black tea. To me, that means 195-205F for 3-5 mins. I tasted it while it brewed. At 3 mins earthy notes started. At 4 mins a caramel taste started. At 4.5 mins a hint of chocolate and smoke was added. At 5 mins it has a distinct smokey flavor. Good with low fat milk, but higher fat milk or creamers deaden the flavor. I also tested a 2nd brew as a black. This time 2 mins brought out the caramel, 3 min started the earthy richness, 3.5 mins brought smoke, 4 mins a tannin sharpness, and 5 mins a dryness on the tongue. I always squeeze the bag into my cup after the final brew. The squeeze this time gives back some of roundness to counter the dry autumn leaves flavor.

Conclusion: If brewed as a black tea, 4.5 mins 1st brew and 3.5 mins 2nd brew.

I will update this with an herbal brewing (212F) detailed experiment soon, but mostly I use this in blends. I think the low temp suggested above for this tea is the reason many don't like it. Toasted mate is different than it's raw (yerba) origin. It isn't a gentle tea and needs high heat to release the full flavor. At 150F you'll mostly get brown water.
Not agreeable to my taste buds. It tastes burnt and overpowering to me. I had to blend in two other teas to make it palatable.
Haven’t tried it on its own yet but goes wonderfully in your morning tea for an extra boost in caffeine
I tried this because I was reading about all of the health benefits of Yerba Mate. Sadly I have found out Mate is not for me.
I’ve always loved Yerba mate and was excited to see how the toasted mate tastes. I was not disappointed.
I thought I was going to love this one, but was sadly disappointed. I love toasted flavors and I love yerba mate. I really am not a fan of chicory at all. If you handed me this blind I would assume it was the best cup of chicory I had ever had, but sadly for me it still would have been chicory. It was not a bad tea just not my type or what I was expecting. It has some weak coffee notes and the texture is smooth and nice. I cannot be sure, but I assume it also carries mate lack of caffeine jitters as well. Glad I got to try with CT even if only to be sure I don't order it for myself. Nothing added to cup. 150° 5 min
This tea had a nice warm, earthy, mellow flavor to it, but was on the lighter side.
This had less of a smoky flavor than I was anticipating based on other reviews. To me, it tasted rich and mellow, not entirely unlike a weakly-brewed cup of coffee. I'd just eaten something sweet for breakfast and this tea managed to cut through that, which (along with its caffeine content) makes it the perfect choice for a morning cup as far as I'm concerned. It tastes like it would stand up well to other flavors, so it might be a nice base to experiment with.
I love a good mate, grew up on it, straight up, pure, from a gourd, with a bombilla... this toasted version is a nice twist on a classic, toasty aromas and rich roasty flavor is a treat.
5 mins at less than boiling temp (no thermometer handy). I enjoyed the toasty notes, and there were some vegetal or herbal notes. I have not had yerba mate, but would like to compare them.
CommuniTEA sample: 2 min @ 150 F, second infusion for 3 min @ 150 F. This isn't bad, but I prefer regular yerba mate. There is a smoky flavor here, and I didn't expect that, but I also do get some nutty, toasted notes. There's a little bit of an earthiness to it, as one would expect with mate, and beneath all of that there's a very subtle, slightly fruity sweetness, kind of reminds me of citrus.
Smells like wood chips. Tastes like cedar. I just don't like mate, and I'm not sure that I will ever acquire a taste for it. I was able to finish it after I added a decent amount of sweetner, but I just didn't enjoy it enough to seek out more mate.
Mate and I just don’t get along. It has too much caffeine and gives me the serious shakes. I’m not a fan of that menthol taste in the background either.
Simple and to the point. A good base if you like to add honey, etc etc
I add this to my Mocha Nut Mate to increase the caffeine. It is a yummy addition. I like that it is toasted, since it creates more depth of flavor. Really smooth flavor. Can't say enough good things about this tea.
Too reminiscent of coffee for me, and I'm not a fan of coffee. Better than coffee, but worse than a black tea for me. I haven't tried any additives, as I don't add things to my tea.
This, with peppermint and sweet cinnamon spice is a combo that I adore. It's one of my favorite mixes and I love making it!
This is my favorite mate of all time. It reminds me perfectly of brazil. Also good iced with lemonade, like a mate arnold palmer.
I discovered this type of tea many years ago at a restaurant on the Portland, Oregon waterfront. I found a single company that made a decent version, but they changed something, and it was no longer enjoyable. I could occasionally find it in specialty stores, but I couldn't find a decent cup online anywhere. This is the first one I've found in years, and I'm so excited!
I would rate this at a five star because I like bitter dark teas but this is a little bland and you might want to mix it with something else. It does have a strong aroma and it does taste like mate should, but there are other teas with better flavors like samurai mate that I think me the needs of someone looking for this in a better way.
There is nothing to write home about with this. It is a standard mate, decent flavors, and you are likely drinking it for the caffeine anyways.
Update: My anti-migraine protection shield, what I keep stocked at work regularly, nutty and pleasant. A nice little routine.
My go-to mate, and the one I use to introduce others to it as well. Nutty and pleasant, and a heavy hitter on the caffeine.
This was a Communitea sample and it was delicious! As soon as I tasted it, I knew it had to be added to my regular rotation. The toasty flavor is delightful. I enjoyed with a touch of milk and sugar.
This Mate is just ok for me. The grassy flavor of the Mate is toned down with the rich toasted flavor
I'm just kind of ambivalent about this one. The flavor is just kind of eh, it isn't giving toasted which is disappointing.
while lacking the nutty warm flavors of the mocha nut mate, it still holds a lot of the same similarities which makes it a nice tea to switch it up with on occasion. also still packs quite the caffeine punch. it has that nice toasted taste and unlike the mocha nut, it comes through quite a bit more as its not having to fight for the spotlight with other flavors. all in all, its a solid 9/10 (only because the mocha nut is my preferred)
This tea was not that good to me. It was rather bland and had a CT bite to it.
I love the slight smokey flavor of a good mate, the toasty flavor here is bonus as well, pass the gourd!
I keep trying mate, but the taste just doesn't work for me. Still more blends to try though!
I enjoyed this smooth toasty tea. I added a bit of honey Very soothing.
When I first opened the bag I thought it smelled like corn flakes, while it was steeping I thought it sort of smelled like oatmeal... and when I drank it, I thought it tasted like cornflakes that someone left out for awhile and then poured some boiling water over in hopes of rejuvenating them. I really wanted to like this, because I love high caffeine teas, but I won't be buying this for my collection.
I enjoyed the toasted mate quite a bit. I like it in blends even more. However, it is delicious on its own.
It has a toasty flavor and is nice with some honey. I didn't notice much of a pic k up in energy today in comparison to the black tea that I usually have in the morning.
Its flavor was fine with or without sweetener but I really wanted more flavor. I think this would be a perfect base for a great blend.
I’m usually not a big fan of Mate, but this one I actually really enjoyed! I had it plain and thought it was a great cup. No smokiness or too earthy at all.
I might be coming around to mate teas after all. This one is earthy, toasty, a little nutty, and smooth.
A very earthy and smooth tea. Not my fav but not bad either.
Update: I really don’t care for this tea, and dumped a half cup down the drain, which is really unusual for me! I dropped this down from 3 to 1 star.
Original review: I found the toasted mate to be weak and uninspiring. I don’t think it tastes like coffee at all. I do enjoy mates in blends and I love Samurai Mate. The Mocha Nut Mate is pretty good. This one just isn’t my cup of tea. I steeped at 150 degrees for 5 minutes and added agave for flavor after I had tried it plain. My second steep was similar and half of it went down the drain (something I rarely do).
Not terrible, but mate just tastes lke smoke to me.
CommuniTEA portion: 150 for 3 minutes. Today's tea has some nutty and toasty notes but wasn't really for me. Maybe mate by itself isn't my thing. Fun to try though.
Nice tea. Slight flavor of nuts. Very smooth. Not something I want to drink daily, but still good.
I love this tea for its rich and smooth flavor. It has a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness, and a hint of nuttiness from the toasted mate leaves. It also goes well with milk and honey.
I wasn’t sure on this one so I added milk and sugar after 4 min at 150F. But the result is a sort of toasty graham crackery flavor with a lot of warmth.
Leather and toast, this mate had a delicate smoothness with a bold toasty vibe. Not something I would drink often, but I do like the caffeine boost once in a while.
It's ok... it's not repulsive, but it's not calling me back for more, either. If I was in the mood for a roasty-toasty tea, there are plenty of others I would reach for before this one... but if it were between this and an Earl, I wouldn't turn it down, either. ;) Steeped 3 min @ 150º.
I really like a flavored mate, and I love mate in blends; but this one did not impress me. I thought it tasted like a cup of ham and bean soup. The smoky toasty profile was present, like a cheap, weak cup of coffee. Not a tea I like on its own. This one, sadly, won't be on my 'wish list'.
