Rich chocolate taste with a pleasing amount of dark tea flavor, but not too overpowering.

Yummy rich flavor. Great for a cold winter evening or chilly frosty fall night. Strong flavor.

★★★★★

One of my favorite teas to turn into a latte. Great for people who love coffee-like flavors!

★★★☆☆

I am a big fan of mate teas, so when I saw the Mocha Nut Mate variety available from Adagio, I had to order. The smell was wonderful, nutty and chocolatey with just a hint of coffee. I like my tea on the stronger side, so I doubled the amount of tea when I brewed my first cup. The flavor did not match the expectation from the smell. It was okay, but still on the weak side. I will try brewing it stronger next time to see if that helps.

★★★★★

Part of the March 2021 CommuniTEA Box. Lots of chocolate and hazelnut adds up to a very indulgent and decadent cuppa. With caffeine as a factor, this is a good way to get your chocolate fix!

★★★☆☆

I don't get chocolate at all with this. It has a very savory flavor to me, kind of like pretzels.

★★★★☆

I liked this. Definitely tasted the hazelnut vibe, a little bit of the chocolate, and some tobacco-like smokiness.

I wanted to like this tea more than I actually did. The dry ingredients smelled wonderful, exactly like hazelnut coffee, but the brewed tea was unfortunately nowhere near as strong. Perhaps upping the amount of tea would help make it taste stronger, but sadly I only had one packet from the communiTEA to work with.

★★★★☆

Interesting, complex taste of hazelnut mocha that has a coffee like quality.

Tastes just like hazelnut mocha coffee. This one really benefits from sweetening and lots of cream - the flavor is pretty light, possibly because of how low the brewing temperature is supposed to be. I don't think I would like it nearly as much if I drank the whole thing plain.

UPDATE: I received another portion of this tea today as part of the communiTEA. Knowing what I know now, I added a teaspoon of plain toasted mate to the leaves from the packet and soaked them in a mugful of cool filtered water while I waited for my kettle to heat. The rinse water came away full of little particles and smelling strongly of flavoring - I was a little sorry to discard it, but my reward after a 4-minute steep was a perfect cup of toasty, dark tea, redolent of chocolate and hazelnuts. I enjoyed about half of it plain before adding a little cream and sweetener for fun. It's great either way. I'm keeping my four-star rating on this product because it's just not bold enough on its own to satisfy a coffee drinker like me, but it has serious potential when mixed with its base leaf.

UPDATE 2: You know you're a long-hauler with the communiTEA when you get your first repeat! Since I've already reviewed this tea once on my own and once through the program, I elected to mix it with an equal portion of my Coffee Lover's Mocha Mate fan blend and brew up a 24 oz pot to share with Mr. Fusion. The resulting tea was much sweeter than my personal mate blend, almost to the point of being too sweet; but the plain toasted mate, chocolate honeybush, and extra cocoa nibs gave it the body that I miss in the catalog blend. Good stuff!

★★★★☆

A complex tea with notes of chocolate, hazelnut, and... tobacco? The toasted mate hides behind the chocolate and hazelnut for the first steep (150°F x 3 minutes), adding a rich depth of flavor. When sweetener is added, the chocolate flavor is enhanced, and the mate takes a step further back. But in the second steep, the mate makes a bold move forward, and a smoky hint of tobacco is noted.

I had my 2nd dose of COVID vaccine this morning and it's hitting me pretty hard - I ended up dumping the contents of my packet straight into the water without an infuser basket! Oops. I just strained out the leaves when I poured the tea into another cup. I love anything toasted, so a toasted tea will always hit the spot for me! I don't think I got any chocolate chips in my packet, so I added a couple of my own to bring out the chocolate flavor more. I like this tea, it's good. (5 mins @ 150 F, 1 drop EZ-Sweetz)

I loved the aroma of chocolate and hazelnut on opening my CommuniTEA packet. This tasted amazing! I might just put this in my 'wish list' ;)

I have to be fair here- the sample smelled very delicious out of the bag and I was eager drink it. However, I totally didn't make this according to recommended instructions and managed to mess up my intro to a mate blend. I steeped this like a black tea, which more than likely messed me up (I never had a mate before). So in the event I buy a sample, I'm totally updating this review. Sorry.

I'm not a huge chocolate liker in general. I appreciated the smooth and simple tastes of this tea. It was not over powering with the different cocoa related ingredients.

I received this tea as part of the CommuniTEA box. As such, with such small portions, the tea blend may be unbalanced. On with the review.

Toasted Mate is not a tea that I've had much of nor have I enjoyed it on the rare occasions that I've had it. This tea is slightly better than the others, but not one I've enjoyed. Upon opening the tea packet, the smell was overwhelmingly of the chocolate flavor, almost like tootsie rolls, with the hazelnut tones underneath that. There were chocolate chips within, and overall, I could see the various ingredients that I could see.

I steeped for a hair over 3 minutes at 150-ish degrees, revealing a brown tea that smelled similarly to the dried leaves, though the hazelnut tones came out more. Without sugar, it is a dark, vaguely nutty or chocolate-y tea, with the underlying toast notes that seem common with toasted mate tea and are what I do not like. The toast pairs nicely with the almost nutella-flavored tea, though it's definitely an...unusual taste. Sugar and milk don't alter the flavor much, and I almost prefer it without either.

While an interesting tea, and certainly one that would be enjoyable if you like the chocolate flavor and toasted mate flavor, it's not for me. Toasted mate has a very particular taste, and one that I don't care for, and so I will quietly pass this tea aside if offered again.

I am not a fan of coffee but this might be very pleasant for someone else. Today’s CommuniTEA packet smelled immediately of hazelnut coffee. I have thus far only tried mate through the CommuniTEA and it seems like toasted mate gives off a much nuttier coffee vibe. I’ve learned that the smell doesn’t always match the flavor of these teas so I tried to keep an open mind. The cup tasted slightly less like coffee than it smelled as it was overpowered by hazelnut. Unfortunately I’ve learned I also am not a fan of this hazelnut flavoring. I drank most of my cup but this isn’t for me.

I'm starting to think that mate is just not for me.
My mate seemed very heavy on the tobacco flavor when hot. All I could think of was cigarettes and cologne. I *almost* dumped it. I let it sit in a corner & think about what it's done, & when I tried it again the flavor had shifted to more coffee-like. I prefer the coffee flavor over the tobacco flavor, but it still wasn't my cuppa. Also, my packet didn't have any chocolate in it, so I added my own sweetened cocoa nibs. Still didn't detect any chocolate or hazelnut flavor in the end.
I did brave a 2nd steep. It was much more my speed. I still let it cool a bit from it's original steep temp, but when I *sipped* (read: slurped) it, it was able to pick up on the chocolate and hazelnut flavors. I'm glad I finally reached this tea's potential, but it's a bit to nuanced for me. I don't think I'll purposefully go looking for it again.
Gave it a cold bath then Steeped 2x, (1) 150F 5min, (2) 3min

This isn't bad! It's reminiscent of coffee as intended and has a very unique flavor. Kind of chocolaty in a way. Not super nutty. I think I could probably come to really acquire the taste of it if I needed to give up coffee completely or something, though I don't think I'll order more at this point.

Mellow, rich, complex, and well balanced, this tea somehow simultaneously evokes the excitement of a grand adventure and also the cozy comfort of home. Every sip brought layers of flavor: first I could taste the toasted mate, then the chocolate, and finally the nuttiness on the back end. When steeped at the recommended time and temperature, there isn't even a hint of a bitter aftertaste. This is definitely one for the wishlist!

It's good definitely not something I would choose to drink on my own. Thr chocolate and hazelnut are pretty good but I prefer a roobios in a sweeter tea. I added some oat milk and it cut out the earty nuttyness which made it more enjoyable for me.

My CommuniTEA packet smelled earthy and chocolaty, and the tea tastes exactly like it smells.

The chocolate is surprisingly bitter, and combined with the earthiness of the mate it makes for a quite un-sweet tea, which I didn't mind. The second steep was a bit sweeter, and I'd imagine adding milk and sugar would really bring out the sweetness of the chocolate. An overall delicious tea, I'll be adding it to my wishlist!

Not my favorite mate. On the plus side, it’s incredibly rich and complex. There’s a brightness on the first sip of a good mate and it’s delightful tempered by the chocolate/cream hints. However, it finishes with a burnt flavor that’s just not doing it for me.

This has been on my wishlist for a long time, and I thought I would love it. It smelled really good in the packet, but the first few sips were rough. Then it went back and forth between meh and tolerable, and then swung back around to yuck. It had a very strong tobacco and watery, burnt coffee taste that just wasn't pleasant. I could taste the chocolate and hazelnut in the background, they just weren't enough to save this for me. As a note, I have like all the toasted mate I've tried in the past, with zero tobacco or coffee notes ever coming out for me. I'm not sure why this one struck me wrong, but I'm not a fan of this combo. (reviewed through CommuniTEA; 4 min @ 150F)

HOLY HAZELNUTS, BATMAN! In the packet, this stuff smells amazing. In my ingenuiTEA, it smelled divine. In the cup, it literally made me smile with delight. As for the flavor...oh my gosh! This stuff is just fantastic. the chocolate is definitely present and so is the hazelnut. I had never had mate before and I was pleasantly surprised by the spicy, toasty notes that remind me of coffee. I cant wait to get a full-sized packet of this blend!!!

It smells like cacao in a bag. Slightly malty in taste with a hint of coffee (or is it chicory?). Good caffeine kick.

Unusual flavor. I brewed it at 160° for 5 minutes. When it cools down, it tastes much better.

My first experiences with mate! The leaves smell so lovely and unique out of the packet. Once brewed, it's a really nice blend - I got the nutty notes of hazelnut, and a bit of cocoa. I drank it plain, and it was very nice to not need cream/sugar.

This tea wasn't for me. I tasted nuts but no chocolate, and it was a bit bitter. I'm not a fan.

My CommuniTEA packet today smelled like a hazelnut chocolate candy. When steeped for 3.5 minutes, I could definitely taste those flavors. I bet it would be even better with some sugar added, but I liked it fine on its own. I didn't try resteeping because the caffeine content makes this a tea I wouldn't buy for myself.

Today’s communiTea smelled simply amazing, honestly could almost have eaten the tea leaves. Once steeped I sipped on a toasty yummy cup, thanks to Jim’s tip regarding “awakening mate” by soaking the tea before steeping, it’s a game changer. See I love Espresso (funny can’t drink reg coffee) and so happens todays mate tea produced a brazilian nutty taste, with a little hint of mocha that created a rich, creamy, ristretto espresso-ish cuppa tea. A little bit nutty, sweet and fabulous.

The two stars is based only on my likes and dislikes. I cannot stand coffee. And while the flavor is not coffee, it’s close enough to be very unpleasant.

I received a sample of this in my CommuniTEA box. This is the first time I ever had yaba mate or toasted yaba mate. I liked the chocolatety flavors but it was alittle bitter and I brewed it exactly as it said on the package. I did kinda enjoy the bitterness though. So overall the taste wasn’t fine for me. I have a low tolerance for caffeine so this tea sent me to the moon. I would love to try other flavors and styles of yaba mate. I like this tea category a lot and this was a good introduction.

The hazelnut is strong, but I think it's the toasted mate that makes me dislike this tea. It seems smoky or burnt to me and leaves a strange flavor on my tongue at the end. I enjoy Yerba Mate much better! (green, herbal, woodsy)

I didn’t even need to check today’s page to know what I’m drinking. Mocha nut mate is probably my #1 favorite adagio tea. It’s perfectly caffeinated, takes about 3 steeps before losing its flavor, and it tastes like f***ing Nutella. Literally what else could you want? It’s the perfect morning mate! (3mins @ 150F)

This tea is just okay for my taste. Very slight chocolate flavor. The hazelnut is a bit overwhelming. This is a tea I'll probably have to sweeten to enjoy.

★★★☆☆

Based on the CommuniTEA packet: Not a fan of the mate teas and it had a little too much chocolate and nutty flavors for me.

★★★★☆

When I drink coffee I like to add some hazelnut creamer or a bit of hot chocolate. This tea reminds me of something in the middle with all three together, but better. There is a nutty sweetness without too much nut flavor.

Today's CommuniTEA packet smelled of toasted maté, hazelnut and cocoa. The recommended steeping temperature was not easily compatible with the VelociTEA maker's button choices. So, I just hit the green tea button for a slightly shorter 2 minute steep at a slightly higher temperature of 165ºF. It worked out reasonably well to bring out the tea's flavor and created a light brown Yerba Maté tea similar to an actual hazelnut in color.

This Maté blend brings forward the roasty yerba leaf and hazelnut in every sip. The leafy green notes from a fresh yerba maté are instead replaced by toasted chicory flavors and cocoa. It's darker than a fresh maté, yet lighter than a black tea or coffee. The second steeping was a bit lighter at 165ºF for 2 minutes, so an additional few minutes of time was needed to get this tea's strength back up to par. As with most maté blends, this one is hard to oversteep.

I really like this hazelnut mocha maté blend because it demonstrates how well balanced a toasted maté can be. It's got the caffeine kick of a good morning coffee replacement like guayusa, but with a more roasted character from the toasted yerba maté. This one's definitely worth a revisit, or a re-steeping!

I like to go into my daily tea journey with an open mind since I have learned that I can't always predict what I will love or hate. I am unfamiliar with mate except for the ones I have tried in the communiTEA and so can't say what a straight up cup of mate should taste like. I found the aroma of the leaves a bit muddy, not really sure what to expect. I brewed it up at 160 and used a little cool water to awaken the mate first and then brewed it for 4 minutes. I find the taste very reminiscent of tobacco, with a bit of camphor, but I did not taste any hazelnut nor chocolate. I also did not find this reminded me of coffee, but instead was a muddy kind of watery drink that left me unsatisfied and reaching for some of my tea favorites to help rinse the taste out of my mouth. This one is a definite NOPE for me, sorry!

In general, I do not like chocolate, not even a little bit. Therefore I was not looking forward to trying it. As a result, I did not like the smell as it was strong on the chocolate notes. What a surprise! I actually like the tea! I added some cream and enjoyed the entire cup. The reason I joined the CommuniTEA was to open my pallet to different tastes and I'm so glad I did! Give it a try.

I used to think I hate Mate, but CommuniTEA has opened my eyes to it and I find I really enjoy a lot of it. This one missed the mark for me, but probably only because of the heavy chocolate aromas and flavors. For chocolate lovers, I think this would be a real winner.

Warm, toasty, and nice chocolately notes! I don't have much experience with mate, but this was wonderful. There was a nice aroma of hazelnut and a strong mocha background. I did not try it with cream and sugar, but I think it would probably taste like a cup of mocha coffee in that case!

Today's CommuniTEA makes me super happy. A deep cocoa flavor with a hint of nut. For me it's great as-is, but I'm sure it would be marvelous with a bit of cream and sugar. Resteeps great, too! Important to be mindful that even though it's 'herbal' it's still high-caffeine.
