White Monkey Customer Reviews

Green tea from the slopes of the Taimu Mountains in Fujian, China. The delicate, unopened buds appear perfectly white against the young, opened green leaves. Warm colored liquor with a fresh, almost wildflower sweet scent and slightly dry finish.

10 oz, 2 mins @ 180, divided. Sweetener in both.

Hot
I've been dreading the idea of today's tea all day. I'm still not quite a green tea drinker. However, even with the vegetalness in this tea, it went down quite smoothly with a slight astringency. But it was much better than I had in my head prior to drinking it. Still waiting for the other portion to get cold.

Cold
I still haven't had a chance to sit down and review this portion. But I'm posting now so I don't forget.

There was an initial aroma of cut grass that I didn't like. After brewing the spent leaves smelled nutty. The tea itself was less flavorful when hot and then as it cooled it was more grassy and then had a mineral finish. In the end I dumped it because I have so many other teas I enjoy better.

This is my kind of green tea! I enjoyed both steeps, with no additives and was glad that I popped a micro filter into my cup before pouring from my gaiwan, as there were a lot of little pieces to filter out. I steeped at 180 degrees for 2-1/2 minutes and 2 minutes respectively for my two steeps.

Very astringent, I didn't like this at all and couldn't even get through a whole cup of it. i didn't taste any of the usual grassy or seaweedy tastes that come with green tea.

This tea has a pleasant vegetal taste with seaweed and mineral notes. Not something I’d turn to regularly, but it was nice to try as part of the CommuniTEA.

Update: Enjoyed this one more this time around, maybe I was in a green mood today. I accidentally steeped for 4 minutes and thought it would be terrible, but it was pretty good so I raised it another star.

11/18/21:This review is a little biased, I’m not a fan of grassy/vegetal green teas. I always try a few sips of each communiTEA packet and this was no different. I finished half my cup. I didn’t get any bitterness from this but it’s too savory for my liking. This one is a “meh” for me today. 175° For 2 minutes.

Decent flavoring. not super strong for my liking.

It's not the grassiest green tea, but it's definitely got some seaweedy aroma. It's smooth; some other reviewers described it as buttery, and I can see that. Still not enough for me to accept drinking a cup of kelp. Steeped 2 min @ 175º.

In the bag: My packet has a higher proportion of dark green leaves than the Adagio photo. I wonder if that means I'll have a stronger flavor.

On the nose (pre-steep): Classic seaweed scent, though softer than many other greens I've tried. Slightly musty.

Post-steep nose and tongue: The S.S. Seaweed is leading the voyage, strong and clear. No longer soft or musty.

Opinion: If you like ultra-grassy green tea, then this is your jam. It's not mine, however.

Preparation: First steep 3 min, second steep 6 min. Both @ 175 ℉. ½ teaspoon monk fruit sweetener.

Do you think it's true?
That we eat more bananas
Than monkeys weekly?

Well it must be true
'Cause I've not eaten monkeys!
At all this whole week!

Though I drank this tea!
White monkey paw looking leaves
And it was quite good!

Mind your time and temp
This tea's a bit sensitive
so treat it gently

This tea has the lightest of savory vegetal flavors with slightly sweetened undertones. It's a more delicate experience for a green tea that I enjoyed! It's has such a smooth and soft mouthfeel to it too!

One of my favorite green teas! It is lighter than a normal green tea and has a great vegetal taste. Highly recommend

★★★★★

This is one of my most favorite green teas ever! It has a light taste that is mildly seaweedy yet slightly sweet. As a cold brew the sweetness comes forward and has a juicy tastiness to it that makes me feel like I’m drinking a very light fruit juice. I love this tea!

This one is really good if you steep it perfectly. 2 minutes and 165 seems to be the max before it starts to turn bitter. Seaweedy, strong, green and slightly nutty with a nice kick of caffeine and astringency.

Update 4/13/23: Rediscovered this one. Delicious! Adding a star because I found the sweet spot. :) 160 @2 minutes=perfection.

This tea is delicate, vegetal, a bit floral, and has a smooth finish. With lemon, it tastes a bit like moss and citrus. With a mild honey, it tastes like sweet grass. Highly recommend!

White Monkey is great with almost any flavor, or no flavor at all! I really recommend making it iced as it can get a little weird with hot water. It is good with any of Adagio's raw honeys. It is also good with a little burdock or a little mango. I really enjoyed this tea and would highly recommend it!

Another really good tea from Adagio. I was surprised how much this one grew on me. Plenty of nice tropical fruit taste and still loads of green tea. I will be getting this again.

I’ve had both golden & white monkeys (green tea) when we had a tiny tea shop in town that sold expensive teas. I’m glad to have some of my favorites here. A bit more vegetal than golden monkey, but still to die for.

Lightly fragrant in a dry and grapey way, and when steeped takes on a more vegetal note, with the slightest hint of seaweed. @adagioteas

★★★☆☆

A perfectly nice cup of green tea, smooth and slightly floral. But for the price, it’s fairly unremarkable.

★★★★★

A perfect green tea for a mature pallet. Slight seaweed essence gives it a unique freshness and a dry finish (and of course, it's permeated by a clean earthiness). A must-try for green tea connoisseurs.

I tried the green tree sampler. This one was my favorite! My suggestion is to brew at 190 degrees for 3 minutes!

As someone noted in the CommuniTEA chat, this tea is oddly reminiscent of corn. I wasn't expecting the burst of sweetness but combined with the vegetal taste, it was very enjoyable.

I'm picky about green teas, and don't particularly care for vegetal greens. This one is vegetal. And yet, I don't actually mind it in this tea for some reason. Perhaps because it's not quite as grassy/ spinach-y and is more seaweed-y? I don't actually know. I don't love it like I love a good genmai, and it's not a tea I'll ever buy, but it was an interesting and somewhat enjoyable cup to try in the CommuniTEA.

Lovely light, herbal tasting white tea. Definitely enjoyable...this one surprised me as I'm not usuallly a white tea fan.

Today's CommuniTea packet is white monkey, a vegetal green tea from the Fujian province of China. It's somewhat seaweedy on its own, and often recognizable in blends. It's a pale green color when brewed, and the leaves are interesting to look at. Not my favorite tea by any means, but a nice change now and again. Brewed in 12 ounces of 180 degree water for about 2.5 minutes.

I didn’t like the smell. It was ok but not one of my favorites ( 212 @ 3 min).

★★★☆☆

I will preface this by saying that green teas are not my favorite. This tea certainly had a 'grassy' smell when I opened the packet, almost 'seaweed-y' as some others have described it. I brewed it for about a minute and a half to try to avoid making it too bitter. I still got a quite bitter taste at the beginning of each mouthful. But once that first bitter touch passed, the following flavor was very smooth and pleasant. It's not a tea I would pick for myself, but it wasn't bad.

CommuniTEA packet tasting, light green tea, I steeped quickly to avoid any bitterness and I was able to get multiple steeps. Happy sipping!
