Lots of golden brown stems mixed with rich colorful green leaf pieces. Smells like buttered, salted greens, and maybe roasted pine nuts, very savory. Taste was very unexpected. Starts with those savory, buttery flavors, but quickly takes a u-turn into a weird kind of celery, raw asparagus. I quite like it all-in-all. A nice savory, brothy tea that doesn t overpower like Hojicha did for me. Thumbs up. Second cup was less enjoyable, less brothy, more celery bitterness. But a really strong cup if you re in the mood for a savory Japanese green.

An excellent and fresh green tea that reminds me somewhat of the Sencha Premier.

This was another communiTea pick. I really liked this green tea. It has a nice light, yet crisp flavor that didn’t seem very grassy to me as some Green teas tend to be.

Very green. Works well with a little sweetener and at the right temperature.

It’s better cold brewed. This green is a tiny bit grassy. not as good as the hojicha.

Tasted like grass that was steeped in overcooked asparagus water. No thank you.

I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I just feel kind of indifferent. The smell put me off, as it smells like seaweed. The taste was better, but quite grassy. It was a very smooth drink, and I can see why a lot of people enjoy it. It's just not my cup of tea (pun intended).

Lovely Japanese green tea. The color of the leaves is very beautiful.

This is a good tea for what it is but it is a little too grassy for my tastes.

Very green and grassy. Not my usual choice of tea but a welcome change.

I like the slight nuttiness to this green tea. It is also a good green tea to use in blends if you are looking for a green color.

I sampled this tea as part of the August CommuniTEA. I first had this tea from adagio over 10 years ago and absolutely enjoyed it. I was happy to see it come across the CommuniTEA this month and knew exactly what it was as soon as I opened it (I only look at the description after I start sipping). This is grassy, brothy, and has a twinge of sweetness. It makes for an excellent afternoon cup.

This tea was absolutely fantastic. It has a lovely flavor. I accidentally over brewed mine a little bit, but there was no bitterness. This is probably my new favorite green tea.

I wasn't a fan of this one. I love green teas in general but this one fell short of the 'it tastes good' mark. I brewed it at 180 for 2min.

This is an excellent green tea with sweet grassy notes at the finish. It took a few sips to acclimate my palate but I kept going back for more. Treat this Tea gently. I steeped at 180 degrees for 2 mins and was rewarded with a delightful cup. I sampled this Tea as part of the CommuniTEA August box.

Didn’t love it but also didn’t hate it. Ended up mixing it with another melon flavored green and really enjoyed.

I'm not a huge fan of green teas, but this one was decent. Not my preference but with some sweetener, i didn't hate it
★★★★☆
The stems were strange to me, I haven't had a tea like this before. But it did not disappoint! To me, it has a 'traditional' green tea flavor. Very enjoyable!

I've found, after tasting teas like pi lo chun and gyokuro, that I'm a big fan of savory, brothy Japanese greens. This kukicha is along those lines, but with a sweet flowery top note that leavens the umami underneath.

Good aroma in package and the cup. Good green taste to fluff. Maybe a bit if citrus taste also. Would buy.

It tastes like a high quality green tea: earthy, grassy, perfect with a bit of honey. If you like green tea, you'll like this one. If you're not a green tea fan, maybe skip it.

I was surprised by this tea. I didn’t think I was going to like this tea as I generally don’t like straight up green tea but this was pleasantly good and light tasting.

Very good. Lightly grassy without tasting like vegetation, a smooth and mellow cup of quality tea.

Japanese teas are actually my favorites. This is a decent kukicha though not the best. It makes a good cup and second and third infusions are actually tastier in my opinion. Do not steep as long as the directions say. Especially the first infusion which can taste to bitter if oversteeped. It has always been my hope that Adagio would get more Japanese offerings for many reasons, healthier teas grown in less contaminated lands than many chinese offerings. I would love to see a more oxidized (not roasted) version of Kukicha. Please...more Japanese teas!

This taste like grassy. I’m not a fan. Maybe it could mix well with other teas?

I'm not a fan of green teas in general, but I can tell this one is very well executed. Very light flavor and astringency. Mostly tastes grassy, without lots of herbal notes
★★★★★
This is exactly the kind of sample I LOVE to receive in the CommuniTEA box: a high quality single-ingredient tea that I wouldn't normally buy for myself. This is a pretty classic high quality Japanese green tea: smooth and light with none of the vegetative astringency that sometimes comes with the territory. What a pleasant cup this made for!

Almost like a traditional cup of green tea - it's refreshing to have a classic green tea after having flavored tea for so long. The flavor is mellow with a hint of toasted rice. Not bitter and not too grassy but as with almost every green tea it does have that hint to it.
★★★★★
Love this. A light, grassy, and mellow green tea fit for a relaxed morning or easy afternoon.

No bitterness, hint of herbal flavor. Pale grass color when brewed, would be good cold with lemonade (small amount) or with mint for people who don't green tea taste but do wasn't to drink it.

It's fine for a green tea. Nothing special in my opinion. Fairly grassy tasting.

Pleasant green tea. Doesn't have the funky seaweed flavors that some Japanese greens can have. It's grassy, mildly astringent, and slightly sweet.

In my past experience with kukicha, it was purely a twig tea. However, it's been so long that I can't say whether the addition of some leaves improves it or not. I can say that this is a tea I would recommend even to someone who's not ordinarily a fan of green teas. It's mild, but not delicate to the point of tasteless. Not as grassy tasting as some other Japanese green teas, with other subtle flavors balancing it out.

Following advice I saw in other reviews, and my own typical behavior, I started with this as a hot tea, hated it, added it to a tumbler with ice and a bit of cane sugar and oh, wow! What a difference!! Delicious!
★★★★☆
I generally like my green tea very lightly steeped, so I was a little concerned with how dark this tea was after 2 minutes, but it wasn't over brewed at all and still had a delicate flavor despite the strong color.
This tea has a really leafy/grassy taste similar to what I'd expect from a powdered macha. It also lacks a lot of the bitterness that green tea can have. I would definitely like to drink this tea again.

Wonderful tea. Great flavour. No grassiness for me. I let my water cook for a few minutes and then steeped for 2 minutes. Putting this one on my wish list.

Very grassy, which is not something I would willingly choose if not for CommuniTEA! I'm glad to have had the experience but would not want this one again.

I normally prefer green tea flavored. Having said that, this one is so far the best out of the plain green teas I have tried. If you are a green tea lover, this tea will be a hot. Definitely let this cool a bit.

This one was definitely a tea with a unique taste profile among other greens. A slightly cloudy green color was noted in the cup. I waited until the tea was warm to bring out flavors. Mild nutty chestnut flavors and bitterness were noted in the background. Grassy and vegetal tastes were forward. Pleasant peppery aftertastes were a surprise on the palate all the way to end. This tea would make a nice alternative to other Japanese teas like Sencha, Gyokuro, or Pi Lo Chun. A second steep produced similar results. This was a really fun tasting! (2 mins @ 175F)

I don’t gravitate to green teas, but was interested to give this one a try hoping for the nutty flavor that some drinkers tasted. For me this hardly had any taste at all.

Very light yet brothy, finishes very dry. Smells like it'll be really grassy, but is not too strong, really balanced.

Green and white teas are more 'healthful' than black... but the flavor of green teas can be tricky to enjoy. this one hits the spot!

One of the grassiest greenest teas I have tried, with a strong vegetable taste. Personally, not for me, as I found it overwhelmingly grassy.

Kukicha is lightly sweet and refreshingly vegetal with a smooth, full body. It reminds me of late spring and summer but can easily be enjoyed at any time. A fine Japanese green tea.
