Hojicha Customer Reviews

Green tea from Japan that is rendered brown by roasting Bancha (a summer crop tea, harvested after Sencha) tea leaves. An Adagio customer favorite, with a toasty nutty flavor and slightly mesquite note. Earthy and warm quality, soothing finish.

★★★★☆

Nice, somewhat smoky flavor. I don't think I like this for an every day tea, but it is a nice change from time to time.

★★☆☆☆

Too strong for my taste of a green tea. Tastes more like a black.

★★★★★

My first exposure to Hojicha tea was bags from Traditional Medicine. I really liked it and thought I would give Adagio's Hojicha a try. I am glad I did as this tea is just as good if not better than the bags. This is a stronger green than the typical and has a unique, smokey flavor all to its own. I keep finding myself coming back to it again and again. I ordered the 2oz tin initially but once its gone(shortly) I will order the largest size available. AWESOME tea, THANKS ADAGIO!!!

★★★★☆

This tea was recommended for cooking from one of Adagio recipes.

★★★★★

Hojicha has a lovely nutty roasted flavor. Very mellow and inviting.

★★★★☆

Great green tea for late at night, when the tea cravings hit but you want to avoid the caffeene.

★★★★★

I love the toasted smell. Some Greeen teas are over powering. Not so with this one. Do not steep for too long. Great green tea to start with if you are not sure about green tea

★★★★★

This is a very, very earthy tea, with a equally unique flavour. I hadn't had it since I ordered my sample pack 7 months ago, but it's just as I remembered it - delicious.

★★★★☆

This is quite an interesting tea. It almost has a chocolatey taste to it. I like to have a cup or two, every now and again.

★★★★★

I love the toasted flavor of this tea. It actually reminda me of some Wuyi oolongs I've tried in the past. So if you like Wuyi oolongs, and assuming I don't have crazy taste buds, give this one a shot. I've already ordered more, it will be sipped many times throughout this cold season!

★★★★☆

This is a little bit more adventurous over typical green tea. I appreciate the lower level of caffeine, as I am caffeine sensitive.

★★★★★

Possibly my favorite tea. The flavor is a very good roasted slightly nutty flavor. Hard to describe. I would reccomend using slightly hotter water and a larger amount of tea to get good flavor.

★★★★☆

Strange. The flavor is almost smokey but unique as ever. I suggest crunching up some cinnimon sticks and steeping them along with this tea to make a nice treat.

★★☆☆☆

Tasted burnt and upset my stomach. At first I enjoyed the aroma but after half a cup it left a charred taste in my mouth.

★★★★☆

Sometimes the smokey taste of this tea is exactly what I'm craving. This would be a great green to try if you tend to find green teas too grassy.

★★★☆☆

Not one of my favorite green teas. It kind of looks like bark when you get it out. It has an ok flavor, I wasn't so fond of the aroma.

★★★☆☆

Hojicha carries with it a heavily toasted aroma and taste. Like Graham crackers. Not like any other tea.

★★★★★

The hojicha is my favorite of the green tea sampler. It definitely has a different taste that some of the other teas. Maybe not for everyone, but I really liked it's smoky flavor.

★★★★★

I love this stuff! Although it's definately understandable that it's not for everyone, it may be my favorite thing ordered from this site. I think this may be the tea to make for someone who would normally prefer coffee or even hot chocolate, though it has less caffeine than regular tea does.

★★☆☆☆

Had a bad experience with this one, upset my stomach after drinking it, tasted burnt instead of smokey. Thinking that perhaps this is just a picky tea, gonna try more to see if I can get it right. I would say beware if you're not prepared to play with the temperature and length of time for brewing.

★★★★★

This is one of my favorites. It has a distinct roasted aroma and flavor, and is very hard to overbrew. Great with meals.

★★★★★

Complex and interesting roasted taste; one of my favorite teas

★★★★★

Hojicha is an acquired taste - try it first if you are not sure. Makes a great sweet tea. Very unique taste, slightly woodsy.

★★★★★

Definite 'roasted' taste - I barely could get the mesquite flavor though. Perhaps the most interesting tea outside of Gen Mai Cha. I'm ordering more as we speak.

★★★★★

This was a very flavorful tea. I will be ordering more of this one.

★★★★★

I could drink my weight in this. It is my favorite. I went through a large tin of it in one week! It is nutty, earthy, slightly smoky and the absolute most wonderful experience in green tea.

★★★★☆

My favorite type of green tea. It's great to drink in the evening.

★★★★★

Great smokey flavor. Very different from your typical green. A nice Change.

★★★★☆

excellent hojicha. nice and toasty. none of the grassy odor or taste as found in regular green teas

★★★★☆

Nice change of pace from most 'greeny' green teas. Plus the extra roasting of these leaves lowers caffeine so I drink Hojicha late and really enjoy the flavor.

★★★★☆

Very 'oolongey,' but you seem to need a good deal of leaves to get a good brew.

★★★★★

This tea is delicious. It would be great for someone who doesn't like vegetal green teas.

★★★★★

LOVE Hojicha. It's got such a wonderful robust flavor. Great introduction for those new to green tea.

★★★★★

I was unsure of this tea when I first tried it in the sampler, but it really is delicious. Almost somewhere between a green and an oolong, but without the fermented flavour of oolong. This is now one of my regular orders.

★★★★★

I really enjoy the smokey flavor of this tea. Just be careful not to have the water too hot or else the taste is ruined.

★★★☆☆

This is definitely unique. I find that I don't care much for it, but if you love green tea this is something worth trying.

★★★★☆

nice roasted flavor. i like this for a change of pace.

★★★☆☆

This roasted green is a nice green tea variation, when one is so inclined.

★★★☆☆

Hojicha reminds me of the tea you get at a japanese restaraunt. It is a combonation of nuts and fish. Its great if you like fish nuts. Sorry hojicha but you only get a 3.

★★★★★

I love this tea. It has a toasty aroma and flavor. It is fantastic warm on a cold winter's morning, or cooled and iced in the summer.

★★★★☆

I liked my sample of hojicha although I don't know if I will purchase more. I am used to a stronger 'toasted' taste to this tea.

★★★★☆

Also love this one. The colour is so malty and the smoky flavour is deffinitely different than any other green tea. A little disappointing that the smoking process reduces the antioxidants, but would still definitely order again just for the taste!

★★★☆☆

This tea is pretty good, except perhaps a bit too light in taste. On the whole it's lighter than any other green tea, so those who enjoy a very light taste, this tea is recommended.

★★★★★

Full flavored hojicha, suprisingly sweet on its own. I prefer full leaf because of the depth of flavor compared to pre-bagged hojicha which is flat compared to this stuff.

★★★★☆

I like the hojicha green tea. It has a very unique taste to it.

★★★★★

nice taste to this tea. one of my favorite teas and have bought more of this!

★★★★★

I loved this tea. The mesquite flavor reminds me of fresh-cut logs burning in a distant fireplace. The texture of the tea reminds me of the “crunchy” leaves that have fallen to the ground. The “nutty” aroma reminds me of the scent kicked-up from a freshly raked pile of leaves.

★★★★☆

My favorite green tea so far. Well balanced and smooth, with classic green tea flavor.

★★★★★

Comforting and gentle--I like it during the workday. It has plenty of flavor but doesn't get bitter, even if you let the tea sit around a while.

★★★★★

This is an interesting one. The smoky flavor from this tea is excellent, and the low caffeine content means it can be a nice treat before bed without keeping you awake all night.
