I really like Gyokuro, it has this thick vegetable green and it’s so good when taken out of its 170° bath a minute before you’d normally pull your green leaves
Steamed green tea from Japan. Gyokuro is among the finest of Japanese teas. Deeply sweet, aroma of freshly buttered greens - no grassiness or harshness. Soft on the palate with a balanced, delicate finish. Soothing and centering cup of tea.

I actually bought this for a friend of mine and brewed it for him. Very sweet, full grassy flavor and aroma. I am not a connoisseur of Japanese green teas by a long shot, but this one tastes very high quality to me!
The price of this tea is steep! But the steep of this tea is priceless! My word what a good tea! I have dreamt many sweet dreams after a cup of this amazing leaf! I wish I could describe it to you but you’re really just going to need one little sample and then it’s over. You’re going to have to mortgage your home. Every dime you make from then on pays for this steep stairway to heaven! My God I love this tea!
This is my favorite Green Tea. I take a brew with me every morning on my way to work. I enjoy it with the rock sugar, Tupelo Honey or just plain.
Gyokuro will impress you with its smooth and delicate flavors. sweet, buttery, and seaweed-like flavor, with a smooth and rounded taste and a delicate finish. The finish is pleasantly dry finish.
I’ve tried this one now for several cups and each time the taste reminds me of red tide to different degrees. This one is not for me.
Very mild, not astringent (no bitter aftertaste either.) The scent reminds me of Maeda-En’s green tea ice cream, very pleasant. I know other reviewers did note fresh grass but personally I did not with this particular green tea. I do think it had a good number of finer particles than the product image displays. Color of dry tea was a vivid green, lovely. I enjoyed my second brew of the leaves more than the first. A very inoffensive tea, nothing to scare off those new to green tea but maybe not much to make them devoted followers either. My review is only based on this vs green tea in general, I have no other gyokuro drinking experience with other brands.
Love this tea. It’s fresh and earthy and I’ve added it to my rotation permanently. One of my favorite green teas
I hadn't tried Gyokuro before, so I decided to give this a go. It has a nice, grassy-sweet flavor consistent with the aroma of the leaves, and brews to a beautiful green color. A very enjoyable cup of tea!
I prefer the flavor of sencha but the gyokuro is smoother and is better as an every day tea for me. Pours a beautiful amber, cloudy, thick goodness. Worthy
This tea is definitely very vegetal and bright, but not my favorite for those very reasons. If you want a strong green that isn’t floral, this may be for you! Reminds me of spinach.
Delicious tea! Earth and tasteful, a great cup during the winter to keep warm
This tea is so good, it has full taste and you feel several layers of additional flavors without sharpness, so well harmonized
I'd describe this tea as 'middle of the road' where green teas are concerned. It's a little bitter, a little grassy, a little nutty, and rather delicate overall. I felt that one can't add much milk (if that's your preference) before it overwhelms the tea flavors.
Due to its price, gyokuro is more of a special occasion tea for me, but I'd drink it every day if I could. It's complex yet crisp and bright, with a flavor that is hard to match with any other green tea.
This tea brings me back to the years my family and I lived in rural Japan. Hours were spent drinking tea - the tea shops were epic - floor to ceiling walls laden with glass jars filled with greenery. This sip and re-sips brought me back to the land and culture I love so dearly. This is one of the best green teas I have tasted since my stint in Japan. Thanks for rekindling these fond memories, Adagio!
This was a very nice grassy green tea, good for multiple steeps. I don't know the exact tempurature I steeped it at, I just let my water sit for around 5 min after boiling befor adding in the tea.
This is my all time favorite green tea. It can be a challenge to brew, but when you get it right it is so nice and green tasting and smelling that nothing else really compares
Most definitely not my cup of tea! ☕️.
This is grassy, but not overly so. It’s refreshing and oddly soothing. I think it defies description, but maybe I just haven’t had enough awesome Japanese green teas. Definitely go with low temps and short steeps (I did 160° for 2ish mins). I brewed western style and steeped it so many times I lost count. I probably used a bit too much water but the flavor held up beautifully and I want mooooore.
I didn’t think this had much flavor. I was smooth though.
A deliciously savory tea, this was all buttery notes of green flavors - grass and seaweed, with no bitterness. It doesn’t sound appealing, but it comes together beautifully.
This was surprisingly good! Soothing and zen, not at all grassy.
This is a lovely green tea. It has a gentle taste and minimal astringency.
Absolutely love this intense green! What a beautiful lively color this tea produces!! Smooth, Fresh, Savory! A tasty, Zen sipper..to get your Morning off right..or for midday meditative enjoyment!
CT 7/20/2023 - plain green is not my top choice. Not bad just not a big one for me.
Didn't try it today. I'll have to update this review when I'm feeling better.
a super pure and tasty green tea, not much to complain about, only praise from me!
It helps to know what to expect from this tea: savory, umami, almost seaweed salty. It’s a very different experience from most of the tea I drink. It seems to be a very good quality, but for sure you have to be in the mood for it.
I certainly appreciate how this green tea isn't as bitter as other varieties. However, on its own it's rather bland to my tongue. I need some sweetness to enjoy, so I paired this tea with some dark chocolate sea salt caramels I had around the house and *chef's kiss* it was just what I needed to relax from a long day at work.
What a unique tea! I think I like it but I’m not 100% sure. Reminds me of nori.
A bit grassy, but I really enjoy it with some sweetener iced or hot. I just can’t have to much.
I love gyokuro, although you do have to pay attention to brewing with this particular tea!
10 oz, 2 min 15 secs @ 165* F divided. Sweetener in both portions. No cream.
Hot
It’s a bit bitter, even with sweetener. No. I just can't do the bitter. Hopefully it mellows when its cold.
Cold
The bitterness was still too much for me. Maybe I over steeped by 15 seconds, but, I didn't go the full 3 mins.
It had nice notes in the background, which I think I would have enjoyed if it weren't so bitter.
When I think of green teas, this is the exact taste I think of. The bright green leaves are beautiful. I found it easy to sip.
This one was very interesting. I would describe the umami flavor as being a savory broth like flavor. This tea has that but it's overshadowed but a kind of vegetable flavor. Not grassy but vegetable, like a vegetable soup with a chicken broth base. With these two flavors combined it has a wonderful balance to it although, personally I prefer a green tea with just a strong umami taste. I enjoyed this one and definitely enjoyed getting to experience it.
This is a delicious green. It reminds me of fresh cut grass. That said, it does not taste grassy. There are light vegetal notes that border almost creamy. The over all result is very smooth.
Love this one. Excellent plant and green taste. Grass and all things gloriously green. Great tea.
This tea was a bit to green for me. I didn't care for it at all.
Gyokuro is the best! It's a pretty tea (long straight little leaves) not overly astringent, a gorgeous forest green color, with a toasty grass taste. I usually enjoy this tea with sushi. I would recommend for all but if you hate green tea you will need honey to enjoy this one.
I really enjoyed tasting this delicious pure green tea which has a light, delicate, vegetal taste and aroma. I steeped at 165 degrees for 3 minutes and am looking forward to additional steeps later in the day!
It tasted like spinach-water. Japanese green teas will just never be my thing. Steeped 2 min @ 160º.
In the bag: Similar to the Adagio photo, but my leaves are longer and more needle-like. They're a rich, vibrant green.
On the nose (pre-steep): A soft, clean, grassy aroma. Mild.
On the nose (post-steep): Steeping has awoken the scent and given it some punch. A powerful, grassy, seaweed flavor. Accent of buttered green vegetables.
On the tongue: On the front end, the taste of green beans. On the back end, slightly sour seaweed. Buttery mouthfeel.
Opinion: Not my jam. Though I recognize that this tea is high quality, I'm just not a fan of naked greens. Especially not those with such a pungent grassy flavor.
Preparation: First steep 3 min, second steep 6 min. Both @ 175 ℉. No sweetener.
9/17/2021: Not a taste for me. Definitely a quality green tea, but I don't really care for most vegetal green teas. Tasted like drinking the water I steamed broccoli in...no thanks. Not my cup of tea -- but green tea fans will most likely love this one!
7/20/2023 - Nope. Not a tea for me. Not a green tea fan, and this is like a cuppa boiled grass for me. But, green tea fans probably love this one! It is a pretty bright green color and I like how it smells. But I don't like drinking it. Still a hard pass. I will leave this to the green tea folks. :)
Green teas are typically a miss for me, and this one was about as good as boiling grass and butter together until they melted into one liquid. However, if you enjoy traditional tasting greens, you'll probably love this. If you're iffy on greens, it's a skip.
I honestly can't tell the difference between this Gyokuro and their Sencha Premier. They're both good, but I would expect the Gyoguro to taste better (and different), like what I've had from Japan.
I love this tea. I love the color and the taste. It's delicate and delightful. I love everything but the price.
Taste of spinach and greens, taste amazing and leaves got bigger than I thought
The gyokuro green tea is complex, balanced and refreshing. It has nutty, buttery, and grassy notes and more.
Being fairly new to Japanese teas other than sencha and matcha, I didn't know about gyokuro until I got a packet in the green tea sampler box. Leaves are a brilliant emerald hue, and brew to a beautiful bright green color. Flavor is vegetal and sweet, with very little bitterness compared to other Japanese greens. Easily the best Japanese green tea I've ever tasted. I had to go back and get a larger sample; and of course it's one of the most expensive greens!--but it's well worth it. Still had a nice flavor on a second steep; I haven't tried for a third but it's possible it may be good for more.
