A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

One of my new favorites, smooth and refreshing. I recommend this to anyone that enjoys green tea
One of my favorite teas! This smoky flavor is perfect for a crisp morning and gives me that jolt of energy pick me up I am looking for!
I liked this a lot - a really nice, light, basic green tea that was slightly smoky and not at all grassy.
This tea gets only 4 stars because I drank so much of it that it started to lose its flavor for me. A good candidate for a value-priced daily green tea.
Really good quality! Just make sure it's not too hot before you steep.
Was not for me! I realized it was not for me because i tend to like more fruity teas!
One of our favorite green teas! A nice light smoky flavor that really energizes me and is great for when I’m preparing for competitions.
I got to sample this one with the CommuniTEA a few days ago. My sample didn’t come across as smoky, which is good for me as I don’t care for that. Thankfully it was not a vegetal green but it was towards the savory side. I can see why it’s so popular. @adagioteas
Flavorful and delicate. Delicious tea that was still lovely after the second steep.
This is a very nice tea. I enjoy it often, very fine taste.
The tea itself is good, but I give this 5 stars because it s great with fresh mint as a Moroccan mint tea. @adagioteas
I think this tea is too strong for me, I will try steeping for longer and maybe at lower temperatures, but I like my tea to be a bit more subdued.
A nice, slightly smoky green tea that goes great as a base for a mint blend, but stands up wonderfully on it s own. It is not a grassy or herbal green, but a nice, clean one that has just a touch of smoke or roasted flavor. I can easily drink this one several times a week and not get tired of it. It works great Eastern or Western brewed. @adagioteas
I didn't taste a lot of smokiness in this cup. It was pleasant.
CommuniTEA packet tasting, delicious classic green tea! Beautiful to watch steep. Happy sipping!
This is excellent gunpowder tea. No nonsense, just what it says on the label - and its awesome if you are looking for a strong green tea.
Today's communiTea packet is gunpowder green tea. I mostly have gunpowder as a spearmint and/or peppermint blend, which I like, but it was interesting to try adagio's gunpowder on its own. Smoky isn't my preferred tea flavor, but it was smooth and drinkable. Steeped in 12 ounces of 180 degree water for about 3 minutes.
[Update] I gave this another chance from CommuniTEA and steeped it for less time, and it's much better. The earthiness is nice when it's not so bitter.
Wow, this tea is smoky! And also kind of bitter, though it may be because I oversteeped it. It's certainly an acquired taste.
The dry leaves have a distinctly smoky aroma, and once brewed, that aroma doesn't disappoint. The smokiness of this tea outweighs the grassiness associated with green tea without reminding one of a barbeque like lapsang can. Rather, this smokiness lends more to the roasty, toasty side making for an enjoyable, savory sip. Even over-brewed, I can still enjoy this one without sweetener, as it ends up reminding me more of black tea rather than spinach water.
This could be a green tea that green and black tea lovers could love. Smooth buttery mouthfeel with very little astringency. Subtle grassy flavors that are balanced with the mild smokey flavor. Love the peppery zings dancing on my taste buds. Love the multiple steeps on this one. Added spearmint to the 3rd steep for a great moroccan mint. Steeped 180° for 3 mins. Cheers!
The more green teas I taste through Communitea, the greater my appreciation. The trick really is time and temp and it makes all the difference. This tea is not as green as some. It is more mellow with a touch of smokiness. Tasty hot through room temp. Can't wait to try this with mint grown fresh from my garden.
This tea is smooth, green and grassy, not too smokey. This is very dependent on water quality and won't taste as great with hard water. It is pleasant with some mineral undertones, but I do prefer green teas with floral nuances or nutty undertones, so this is not one of my favorite blends.
Green teas aren't something I usually enjoy unless they're very mild or have mint mixed in. This one is nice and mild with a hint of smokiness.
I like gunpowder well enough in a Moroccan Mint blend, but on its own, it’s just another green for me.
Such a good green! A new favorite for sure!!! Would taste amazing with some orange flavoring <3
Green tea has always been my favorite and gunpowder green takes it up even higher on my list of favorites. Just plain delicious tea with a slight natural smokiness. I am so intrigued to try it with come spearmint.
This tea ok taste slightly smoky really nice light basic tea (170 @ 3 min). Was miss this one, try my daughter.
Nov,6,2021: I'd like to think that my taste in tea has matured just a bit from last year when I tried this for the first time. Compared to last year I now have a clear steeper so I can watch the rolled tea unfurl. Flavor profile hasn't changed, smokey, grassy, smooth. I can appreciate & enjoy it on it's own like this, but I think I still prefer it in blends.
Nov,5,2020: I was excited to see this as a CommuniTea sample. This is a tea I had heard of but never tried. I'm glad I got to try this tea by itself, learn a bit about it's flavor, that way I will know a bit more about what to look for in a mix. Because I'm so used to strongly flavored, sweet, or fruity teas, I picked out the smokey notes right away - completely different to what I'm used to. Though it's nowhere near the lapsang tea I've tried before in terms of 'smokiness'; It's noticeable but it's not like I licked a piece of charcoal. I do also notice the 'earthy' 'grassiness', but again, I don't find it to be overwhelming. Would I drink this on it's own again? Probably not, I do still prefer flavored teas. But I wouldn't turn down a cuppa if someone offered.
It's a savory and flavorful green. Very smooth, fairly grassy, and with a slightly smoky aroma. Just as much flavor from the 2nd steep as the first. Best when hot. (3 min @ 180)
Very pleasant green tea. At Adagios recommendation I added spearmint tea to it and made a delicious Moroccan mint blend. This would be delicious in the summer iced.
Love this green tea! The little balls are fun to watch unfurl, and the taste is smooth with a hint of smokiness. There is no bitter, grassy, or vegetal flavor. It is good plain, or with a drop of honey. Resteeps well, too. And blends well with other teas.
I've come down with another cold unfortunately, so from what I could surmise in the pouch, today's tea smelled a little seaweed-y, but as to be expected from a green tea. I brewed it with water below boiling and I let it steep for over three minutes I believe, I'm not sure of the exact time. But it made for a comforting and slightly seaweed-y cup, and it soothed my sore throat a bit. Delightful.
A nice green tea to blend with a little peppermint!
A lovely green tea. I love the little balls of tea and how much they expand.
A quality green tea for the green tea lover. I like it best when I let it cool just a little after steeping it.
Love this tea. What a smooth green tea, and fun to watch as it steeps! One of my adagio staples.
Ahhh Gunpowder…….fascinating to watch when steeping; not for me when tasting straight………. Wish I’d known to have mint on hand, maybe that would have made a difference.
Haiku Review
Mmm mmm mmm mmm
Each mmm is one syllable
I so now declare!
Old review; Mmmmmm! I debated filling the whole space with mmmm, but added some words, Mmmmm! Excellent green tea, smooth and rich!
This Gunpowder green tea was super lovely. Small young rolled pellets. Great mouth feel, full & thick. Grassy & smokey pan fried flavors and was able to get several brewings gongfu style easily. I brewed one minute at a time, best brew was second and maybe third. Smells great, too. Empty sharing cup had a hint of buttery baked goods but I couldn't reproduce the scent after first or second brewing of the leaves. Would purchase this again!
I love a mild green tea, and a reduced time on this oneis great. I realize that the appearance of a tea is hardly the main factor, but I do love watching the curled up leaves unfurl as they steep.
If you like green teas, this smokey green should always have a place in your stash. Not as harsh smoke as a lapsang souchong, not as light as a jasmine tea, gunpowder is smooth and hearty.
I was very excited to try this tea. It was rich, smoky, bold and smooth all together. I delicious tea!
I've had this in a few fandom blends, and it always added a great depth to the scent and flavor with its smokiness. And even straight, it's wonderful, and on my list of things to buy again.
Nice tea, slightly bitter, but that was probably due to my water being slightly too hot, not because of the tea.
A classic gunpowder. I brew short and 185 to avoid bitternesss. Lots of rebrews!
Wonderful green tea. Lots of flavor, good for multiple steepings.
CommuniTEA Sample: This the least green-tea-tasting green tea I've had. It doesn't have that grassy, vegetal flavor that I love. Even the color is different (light brown as opposed to yellow or light green). It is definitely smoky and peppery. Not my favorite, but still very enjoyable on a crisp fall day. I love trying these pure, unflavored teas!
This is a solid green tea. Not too grassy, but clearly makes it’s greenness known. Slightly smokey.
With the scent of an ancient forest, tiny green/grey pellets came tumbling out of my CT packet today like buds from one of those ancient trees. This curious looking green has a mysterious aura but is smooth with no strong vegetal or grassy notes, just a unique smoky flavor that is fun to add to other teas. Careful brewing ensures a pleasant sipping experience with no bitterness. Adding green tea honey elevated the flavor of this beautiful golden liquor to delicious. My packet had 4 g/ 2 tsp of tightly rolled tea leaves. Brewed 12 oz. at 175*F (green tea temp.) for 2:30 min. then enjoyed 2 x 6 oz. resteeps for 3 min. each. I like this tea more and more each time I brew it solo, but for now, I definitely love the smoky tang it gives to fandom blends. 5 stars for its pleasant smoky touch.
