Gunpowder Customer Reviews

A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

Out of the bag it smells... well... off. It has a green tea smell to it, but there is something else there, something not so good smelling, but at the same time its a somewhat drawing smell. In drink form it is a bitter tea, with a strong after taste, but it is definitely a good green tea overall.

Delicious green tea, good when I'm craving a simple cup of green tea. The smokey flavor is subtle. Stick with the recommended steep temp and time or it becomes too bitter.

★★★★★

Unlike getting shot, gunpowder tea is great. Highly recommended--it's a fun one.

★★★★☆

A mild green tea that I like to take in the morning to perk me up.

★★★★★

My mother bought this and I tried it when she made me a cup, but I get to review it now since I bought it for a few other people. :P

Should tell you right there that its good. I'd recommend it.

★★★★★

Smoky, strong green with just the right bite. Straightforward go-to for green.

★★★★★

Fantastic- my favorite green tea I've ordered. Be careful not to use too much, as the leaves unfold in the water.

★★★☆☆

Too smokey for me, but just right for my boyfriend. Go-to for someone that wants both a green tea and something a little more dark.

★★★★★

Adagio's gunpowder is of very high quality and perfect any time of the day.

★★★★★

I don't taste the smoky notes that other people seem to in this tea. It is a pleasant, mellow tea with a hint of vegetable or spinach at the finish.

Sweet and green with a hint of smokiness. Pay attention to the water temperature. this becomes a bitter brew if steeped in too hot water.

★★★★☆

I think this is good, and is definitely very smooth, but not the best gunpowder I have ever had. I think I prefer a bit more smokiness.

★★★★☆

this green tea has a smokiness to it, also has a hint of mint which you can taste

It's good. Nothing to write home about, but it's good.

Perfect daily green tea! I find this to be one of the most 'effective' green teas Adagio offers. Stronger in grassy taste and the highs it provides. Highly recommended!

Very smooth refreshing taste. Lightly smoky scent, not so much in the flavor. Lightly vegetal with a mild buttery end. Decent caffeine content.

★★★★★

this is a wonderful green tea. absolutely incredible

★★★★★

This was a great, full-bodied green tea. I enjoy drinking it in the morning.

★★★★☆

Very hard to brew just right. Gets horribly astringent if you get it wrong, too long or too hot, but a fine green tea if you get it right.

This is my favorite green tea so far! It is very flavorful, but not overpowering. You really only need one full teaspoon per two cups. Because the leaves are rolled they need room to expand in the infuser basket. I also like to add a pinch of German rock sugar to this one, it mellows out the after taste green tea can leave.

★★★☆☆

A very strong green tea and gets bitter if you accidentally use too much which is easy because the leaves expand so much once they steep! If you use the leaves sparingly it's a good green but definitely far from my favorite.

My grandmother from Shanghai is a tough critic. So if she sat for the second infusion, I consider that a victory. My husband loves the smoky flavour and the nutty accent.

Hands down the best bargain for mainland green tea here. As with many rolled tea, be sure to use an infuser that gives the leaves a place to expand for maximum surface area to water. Go the full 3 minutes to steep, Chinese green teas like the extra time to warm up.

This tea has a good taste without being overpowering. The flavor is more subtle than the aroma.

I really liked this tea, I will be certain to but it in the future.

Smooth, faintly smoky (comes through in the scent more strongly than flavor). It tastes very 'green.' I'm not sure how else to describe it. I like it without adding sugar, which doesn't happen very often.

Update: I've been sick for a few days, and this tea has been a godsend. I just add a bit of lemon and ginger, and honey, and it's wonderful. Tasty and soothing.

It's an inexpensive but well rounded tea that I now drink as my day to day tea. It's not stunning but it's light and pleasant. Just make sure you give the leaves plenty of room to unravel. The flavor improves as you give more space.

I can totally see why everyone loves gunpowder green tea. It has an amazing flavor. It is definitely going onto my favorites list.

My Moroccan tea base. I don't drink much green, but I keep reordering this one.

★★★★★

I usually add honey to my green teas, but this was delicious without it. I love watching the leaves open up in my ingenuiTea.

★★☆☆☆

This tea was too strong for me. I've tried it several times thinking maybe I would get use to it, but it's just not the right tea for me.

★★★★☆

A bit smokey with a grassy after finish. It's an all right green tea.

★★★☆☆

ok for a classical gunpowder tea, but I feel like it is a bit too expensive for what it is.

★★★★★

Another great tea. Good strong flavor with an earthy after taste.

★★★★☆

good hard taste. not smooth, gunpowder is a great description. Good tea

★★★★★

I drink this daily because it so cheap and satisfying. It has a strong aroma and taste, although some people may find it overpowering. I have two cups of this during my break at work and i can stay very focused the rest of the day. I also drink this when i need to study, great for focusing and no crash like coffee.

I was surprised to hear the gunpowder pop when it was steeping! The taste was good, not nearly as overpowering as some other teas.

★★★★☆

Classic tea taste and I'm almost positive it helped my cough calm down, which was nice. Not as much of a pow as I expected, but still enjoyable.

★★★★★

While gunpowder is smoky, the smoke doesn't overpower the tea-flavor. I really prefer this over the lapsang souchong.

★★★★☆

A nice light green tea, simplistic enough to create mixes with effectively. For me, the vegetable flavors are a little too sensitive with the steeping times. Over-steeping just a little bit changes the entire character into something very pungent. Though, if you can get the timing down, this is a great tea.

This is an excellent green tea. It tastes great plain, sweetened, and with milk. A great value too, considering I can get two or three good steepings out of the leaves.

I've been searching for a good green tea that I could drink on it's own. This one is it. Nice 'green veggie' taste, but still mild enough to not have to add anything to it.

★★★★☆

Nice smokey flavor with a nice light veggie flavor at the end.

★★★★☆

This tasted more grassy to me than the smoky I was hoping for. Still good, blended or on its own.

★★★★★

deep green tea, a bit smoky like the name suggests. It's fun watching the leaves unfurl

★★★★★

I love the smokey taste of this tea. I definitely consider this tea to be one of my favorites.

★★★★☆

Probably my favorite of Adagio's greens, and definitely the only one I'd drink by itself on a regular basis. A little smoky without having the burned flavor of the hojicha, a nice green flavor without being overly grassy, strong without being objectionable - it's a very smooth tea that blends well - and not just with mint! (Try it with apricot green - it's quite nice!)

I'm not usually one for green tea, but I love this. It's not too vegetal for me at all. I usually mix it with spearmint.

★★★★★

This is my first whole leaf tea, (aside from the revolution tea at my local store which is really just bigger chunks). I was really happy because compared to bags this tea is very mellow, it doesn't have that bitter taste that bagged green always has. It's very mellow, kind of a smokey green taste. The main reason I drink green tea is due to it's relaxing effects. This whole leaf tea has a very relaxing effect compared to bagged. The l-theanine content of bagged tea must be alot lower. This tea is also great after 3 infusions.

I had recently been on a hunt for my husband's favorite type of green tea and this hit the nail right on the head! He wanted something that had that slight but not overpowering bitter kick and what he would normally find served in a sushi restaurant. (LOL, like that gave me much direction...) After trying several different Green Tea samples we finally found his perfect cup!
