Gunpowder Customer Reviews

A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

I love the smokiness of it! Definitely what I needed.

★★★★★

I am so pleased with this tea! I love the smoky aftertaste that hits the back of your throat. Simply delicious. This is my second venturing into green tea and I highly recommend trying this one.

I may have over-steeped it a tad, but this was one of the strongest teas I've ever had. Enjoyable once you got used to it, but definitely an acquired taste.

★★★★★

I love this tea, especially with mint. It is one-dimensional (mildly smokey), but is smooth with a pleasant, long lasting earthy aftertaste.

Was in my top 3 green teas... until Sleeping Dragon came along. Don't get me wrong, Gunpowder is a classic with awesome flavor and taste, but it is more one-note (as in just smokey) than Sleeping Dragon is (which is more complex, being smokey and sweet at the same time).

Both are 5/5 teas, but I think the Sleeping Dragon edges it out.

Wow. I really like the flavor of this tea. It tastes a little like miso soup (at least, to me it does) without the sodium. It isn't too powerful, so I can sip it, or I can chug it as I see fit, hehe.

★★★☆☆

The taste is pretty in your face, but I'm sure with a few more careful steeps it becomes more subtle.

★★★★★

this is fantastic! pumps you up! also has the added benefits!

★★★★★

Gunpowder tea is a wonderful thing. Slightly smokey and absolutely perfect when mixed with a bit of spearmint or peppermint.

★★★★★

When I opened the bag, I noticed it smelled alot like rabbit food pellets, and the leaves were smaller than I thought they'd be. Either way, this is a nice green tea, and the smokey flavor grows on you fast. I think this would be a good iced tea, as I somehow chilled some with my car's A/C and it was just as good as it was hot.

When I first ordered gunpowder, I ordered it simply on the fact that it was known to be a 'green tea staple' and I wanted to experience that. What I discovered was the power of green tea (no, not its supposed health benefits. I will leave that sort of thing to personal opinion). The 'grassy' or 'vegetal' flavour and aroma that others spoke of sounded somewhat intimidating or daunting without a flavour to compare it to. These words still ring true once you've tasted the tea, but they're in no way off-putting. Of course, this is partially left up to personal opinion. I enjoy the scent alone, both before and after steeping. I would suggest this to anyone who is curious what gunpowder might taste like due to its fame, or anyone who prefers the grassier/vegetal taste not always found in herbal/floral teas.

Smoky, spinachy...yep all there. The trick to brewing this one to my tastes has been balancing flavour and aroma with astringency. What I have come to is a first brew at 160 for two minutes and drink or dump (it's just OK at this point.) Then at 180 for two minutes on the second brew I get the smooth flavorful cup I am looking for. Third brew for me comes off a little dull. This is my after noon or after work tea.

I mix this tea with peppermint (or spearmint, but peppermint is my preference) to try to make Morroccan Mint tea. I use about 2 Gunpowder to 1 mint scoop and mix thoroughly. I very much enjoy the combination of these two. To be honest, I don't really like the gunpowder green by itself. But, with the mint, it is not overpowering. I get the smoky, vegetal taste to begin and then the mint takes over and lingers. Good tea.

★★★★★

I love watching these beautifully enormous green tea leaves unfurl, and it's interesting to discover how nicely Gunpowder plays with other teas. It seems like it's going to be fussy and standoffish, but it's actually a stalwart!

very ashy, not as grassy or vegetal as i personally like, but i do like this with some mint, a nice spring tea.

★★★★★

I got this with spearmint to make the traditional mint tea, but it stands on its own quite nicely. Has a mild smokey aroma, and a very warm taste. Excellent example of this style.

My sister loves this tea, she always wants to drink it.

★★★★★

Great tea. Just a little bit of bite. I typically brew @ ~160 for 30 seconds, brewing several times

A bit more mellow than I'd hoped for, but an all around tasty green. I'd serve this to someone wanting to explore more greens, a perfect green to start with.

This is a good quality base green tea that would be good for mixing in herbs etc. It is not poor quality like tea bags found in the grocery store that are really bitter and full of fluoride, however, I prefer a higher quality tea like Jasmine phoenix pearls or matcha.

★★★★☆

Very good tea, i preferred the sleeping dragon to this one, but still very good.

★★★★★

I love strong tea... and this tea passed the test. I brewed it a little longer than recommended and it ended up perfect.

★★★★★

I thoroughly enjoy Gunpowder. Very mellow and soothing. The nose reads very much like cooked vegetal to me, almost like steamed cabbage, but also has a fresh vegetal earthiness like fresh-cut grass. It teeters between smokey and roasty for me. perhaps toasty is the right synonym. The flavor has a savory blossom characteristics. it's not sweet. Very little resin. It reminds me of freshly-printed copy paper, which is always a pleasant sensation for me.

Very good. A little weak, maybe? It's easily fixed by adding a little extra to the teapot.

★★★★★

I drink this tea in the morning before work. I like to add local honey, and it is just excellent.

Yummy. A basic green tea. Very vegetal, great for blending. Nice hot or iced.

★★★★☆

I couldn't get a sense of this tea from the smell. But I did like the flavor. It tasted smoky as I expected but it also had a slight flavor of kale.

★★★★☆

A pretty good solid green tea. It looks really pretty all rolled up too.

★★★★★

Apparently, this tea is named 'gunpowder' for its appearance, but regardless of looks it's a fitting name. It has a deliciously ashen/smoky taste that I just loved. The smell and looks aren't anything too amazing, though it is neat to see the little balled-up leaves unfold into full leaves. A tea that I can see myself getting again and again.

★★★★★

Love this tea. one of my favorite teas for everyday.

Not my favorite green, but still a very tasty brew. I think I brewed it weak so maybe it'll improve. However, it woke me up and was nice and comforting, so I will be drinking more

★★★☆☆

The best part about gunpowder tea is watching it unfurl. The taste is not always there for me. I'm glad I only got a sample size.

It was not my favorite green tea, but it may have been because of the fact that my water was too hot. It seemed to taste bitter, but again it may have been user error.

Gunpowder is a very different green tea. The flavor is mildly smoky when compared to the smokestack that is lapsang souchong. In fact, I think after trying this tea more, tea-goers, including myself, may start gaining a taste for lapsang. Gunpowder almost tastes nothing like other greens, but while swishing it around in my mouth I can get that small familiar hint of green tea I am used to. It's aftertaste is long lasting and enjoyable.

I love this tea! A little smoky, kinda dark, but delicious. I do prefer it in a blend than by itself, though.

★★★★★

Favorite green tea I have had from adagio so far, I mix this with Casablanca twist to tone down the peppermint flavor of the other one.

★★★★☆

To be honest, I was attracted to this simple green tea by the price. It was too affordable to pass up, and I love plain green tea. At first I didn't notice anything 'smoky' about this tea, nor anything resembling gunpowder, but the flavors are darker and a little more roasted than normal green tea. I enjoyed it and might re-order for something plain, but I've got some other greens to get through and it's not something I'm dying to have again.

This is my favorite green tea. Smoky and very mild. The tea leaves expand quite a bit, so leave room! I can reinfuse two or three times.

A smokey, flavorful gunpowder that is comparable to others that I have had for a higher price.

strong earthy tone great pick me up. mixable with many flavor profiles.

Edit: after some use i found my palette did not like this one. the name is appropriate.

I'm not really a green tea person, but it was not objectionable. Bought for someone else. He likes it! So that's good!

★★★★★

Being a person who is not too fond of green teas (mainly the grassy green teas) I was thrilled to discover this tea, it wasn't grassy at all in fact it was incredibly smooth and refreshing!

★★★★☆

This is a great, simple green tea. Very light and airy, I would recommend it for a good introductory green tea.

The gunpowder green tea was not what I was expecting. It's toasty flavor was too much for me. I think it is just an acquired taste.

Really smokey. Kinda taste like an ash tray. I don't smoke but I like it.

I just got a proper electric kettle with custom temperature controls and the flavor compared to my first review is like night and day. The scent is still a little more grassy than I prefer, but the flavor is perfectly smooth. My second-favorite green tea!

[previous review] Very good for a standard green. It brews up a /little/ bitter for me, but since I don't have an electric kettle to control the temp I /think/ it's just the way I'm preparing it, so I'm giving it a 'good' rating. If I get a better way of controlling the temp and it's still the same, though, I might revise this down to 'ok'.

Interesting smell when the bag is opened and when it's steeped. But I do love the smokey quality this has. And it's wicked cool to watch the pellets unravel into leaves as they steep! Great for Moroccan tea and to mix with other teas. But definitely make sure time and temperature is right with this one if it's the main part of your tea. You don't want this to get too bitter!

This tea can be steeped for lightness or richness. A little goes a long way.
