Gunpowder Customer Reviews

A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

This is a great choice for green tea and a great replacement for coffee.

★★★★★

Nice and smoky, it is strong only use a couple teaspoons at the most. It is a very strong green, stronger than some of the weak oolongs. I usually let it steep for about six minutes.

★★★★☆

some of the reviews had this as tasting quite strong and smokey. I thought it was quite pleasant. Perhaps they over-steeped or had the water too hot.

A rather bold cup of tea. Took some getting used to. Not one of my go-to teas, but nice every once and awhile.

★★★★☆

clean and refreshing on the palate. the dry tea is quite lovely, small tight-rolled balls - a lot of weight can fit in a small container.

Light, with a mild smokiness. Easy to drink green tea.

★★★★★

This is the first loose leaf gunpowder that I've tried, and I wasn't at all disappointed! The smokiness of it gives it a very elegant, ancient feeling.

This was definitely a solid choice for a green tea!

About a year ago while visiting family, in a restaurant I saw gunpowder tea on the menu, and was intrigued by it. I never got to try it. I recently purchased it, and it's amazing. I love watching the leaves unfurl from their tiny pellets and swell up. Amazing tasting tea, very soft and soothing. This is one of the first green teas I've tried, and you'll expect to see me around here a lot more.

I'm updating my review because I find this to be the perfect green iced tea! At first I was reviewing it while hot but I think it holds up to the icing pretty well

★★★★★

A strong-willed green tea. One of my favorites. Can be brewed multiple times, moreso than most green teas.

★★★★☆

This tea was surprisingly good. I was skeptical, but only because it was a green type tea. It's got a strong taste and a smoky-like flavor.

★★★★★

Gunpowder was among the first teas I ever tried at Adagio and ever since has become a staple of my tea cabinet. It's a great tea for those looking for a serious cup of green tea. It won't rewrite your opinion on green tea, or invite any crazy new flavors to play, but if you want to keep it simple, (which you need to do every once in a while) it's a hard tea to top.

★★★★☆

A very good tea, slightly bitter (which is what a lot of people like about this tea). Very green tasting. I truly enjoy this tea.

★★★★★

Adagio's gunpowder green tea is by far the best I've had, and much better than any local offering--including whole foods stores. Will definitely reorder.

★★★★☆

Delicious green tea with a hint of smokiness. Lapsang Souchong is far too much for me but this is just the right amount. I enjoy the bitterness of the tea and the slight smoky smell.

★★★★☆

Smooth, slightly cloudy, a mild good flavor. Gets very bitter if steeped too long. I mix it with Peppermint for Moroccan Tea, which I love very sweet.

★★★★☆

This tea tasted too mild to me, however my husband is a green tea lover and he prefers it more than the other green teas we have sampled: dragonwell, jasmine dragon pearls and regular dragon pearls...

★★★★★

Great green tea and will become and everyday cup for me. Reasonable in price.

★★☆☆☆

I thought this tea tasted a little bit on the sour side I did not like the taste i steeped it according to the direction as i sample it again if it taste better i will give a better review

★★★★★

A solid, dependable favorite. I love it, and plan on blending with it.

★★★★☆

I bought a sample of this tea, and I enjoyed the simple flavor of the brew. I usually prefer green infused with spearmint, so I'll definitely try that with this tea.

★★★★★

This is now my favorite tea. Just reordered. Love watching the leaves open

★★★★★

My go to tea. I drink a cup every day after lunch.

★★★★★

While I describe Sleeping Dragon tea as 'satiny,' this gunpowder is more like velvet. It's a little heavier in flavor than Sleeping Dragon, and amazing with just a little honey. The leaves are very big when they unfurl, so if you have a basket-style infuser instead of a tea ball, you'll want to go with that one to give them a lot of room.

★★★★★

very tasty tea indeed.

★★★★★

One of my favorites. Has a strong green tea taste with a tangy bitterness that hits you right after that. I think its more of an acquired taste and would only recommend it to people who love green tea. If you are scared though. Buy the sample. Its only like 2 dollars

Update: Gunpowder has redeemed itself! Kind of...
I mixed it with spearmint for Moroccan Mint Tea and it was good.

This tea is just 'meh' for me. I don't taste much when I'm drinking it, but there's a very light green/smokey aftertaste.

I've never been one for green teas, so this wasn't quite to my taste. That being said, it had a nice, delicate flavor, a bit like matcha. However, I was expecting a stronger smokey taste. I originally bought it to brew a Moroccan mint, so we'll see how that goes.

One word describes this tea for me: tasty. Its not the best tea ive had, its not the best green either, but it is very easy to drink, quite addictive, and very widely appealing in its flavor profile.

★★★★★

This is a good green tea, for mixing or plain. I bought it for my mom and sampled it with her, and we both said that it was one of the best green teas we have ever had.

★★★★★

The tea is great. I love it in the winter hot, even more when its cold in the summer with some honey. Great for multiple steepings.

★★★★★

Excellent green tea. Be careful not to brew too long. Delicious brewed with peppermint and spearmint.

★★★★★

My first green tea from Adagio. I was sort of looking for a no nonsense green tea, so this was great.

★★★☆☆

This was a STRONG tea. My boyfriend usually goes for an extremely strong tea, but his one was too strong for even him. I would reccomend mixing it with another tea for sure.

★★★★★

I bought this for my father and I to share as he is a huge fan of gunpowder teas. I think he put it best saying 'This is the best gunpowder tea I've ever had.'

★★★★★

Good tea. I might have brewed mine too long as it was a bit strong for my taste, but still a very good tea.
Revised. The more I drink this the more I love it. Will definitely be getting more of this. I prefer this with a little more than one teaspoon per cup but brewed only two minutes. This is the perfect recipe for me.

Pretty nice, basic green tea. For the price, its a great deal.

★★★★★

really nice green tea, cheap and a little goes a long way and cool to watch steep

★★★★★

I love gunpowder greens. This one is bright and is spectacular blended into a Moroccan Mint with spearmint.

★★★★☆

I got this because it was a nice price for plain green tea. I enjoy it on it's own when I'm in the mood for straight-up green tea and mix it with other kinds of tea when I want to add it's caffeine content to a tasty flavor.

★★★★☆

Always wanted to try this, and it was really good. To me, its hard to go wrong with teas like this!

★★★★★

this is my favorite green tea. it's perfect mixed with a pinch of spearmint. it keeps the gunpowder from getting bitter even after it starts to go room temperature. excellent!
Update 1/27/14 - still love this one! good for multiple brews - I add more spearmint for the re-brew.

★★★★☆

Tastes the way you'd expect. Nicely sweet. Gets a bit too spinachy, bitter if oversteeped. Resteeps extremely well. Sometimes I just put a 1.5-2tsp of leaves on the bottom of a glass and drink straight from that, and refill as needed with some water on the bottom to add flavor to the next brew. The first brew is usually on the harsh side, but I easily get 6-7 glass of tea out of it. A teaspoon of gunpowder at the bottom of a 16oz thermos, filled 3-5 times over the day, has got me through a lot of days that cold winter.

This tea has an excellent gunpowder taste, without the usual bitterness. A hint of a nice grassy taste. This is an excellent everyday green.

This latest shipment is definitely a different gunpowder. Somewhat lighter in color, and less tightly rolled. The taste is much the same, though I will likely brew more tea next time. (I usually brew 1/2 as much tea, since this tea expands greatly.)

Keep the amount of tea down so the leaves have some breathing room and use a standard brew time and temperature.

As with all gunpowder that I have tried, it tends to shed some tea leaf, though less than most others I have tried. Use a fine mesh to strain if possible.

A nice strong flavor. Would be nice for mixing with things, without loosing green tea flavor.

★★★★★

I enjoy this nearly daily, steeping at least 3-4 times in my little glass mug. Has sort of a 'green vegetable' taste (a taste connoisseur I am not), but not bitter or astringent.

★★★★★

This has to be one of my favorite tea's I have tried. It has a very strong flavor that keeps me wanting to drink more and more. I will for sure be making this a standard bulk tea in my house. I usually steep a pot of this, take a thermos full to work and drink the rest before and on the way. By far the best gunpowder green i have tried.

Classic green tea, my go to daily green tea, it's one of the stronger tasting green teas and is a great everyday tea.

At first taste I wasn't sure I liked the gunpowder tea but it's grown on me. I've found it can have a smokey/ashy flavor or a nice mellow vegetal taste depending on water temperature.

For a smokey flavor I've found 180-190 degrees is good. For a more vegetal flavor I go around 170. The 10 degrees does make a difference. By the 3rd steep I get a mildly sweet, slightly floral taste.

Good for multiple steeps.
