Not for me. I could see why people like this tea but it's just not my favorite. It tastes like popcorn kernels and it felt like a chore drinking it. If you like buttery and hearty tea...this could be for you.
Classic Japanese green tea, blended with toasted, popped rice. Warm, nutty with a lovely savory and hearty quality.

nice, not overpowering but reassuring. I bought a small sample and am tempted to get more.
Genmai cha is one of my fall/winter staples and I realized I had never tried Adagio's. Normally I get a big cheap bag from an asian market. Adagio's was a little lower in quality that I'm used to, the green tea was kind of flat and grassy - not as buttery as I tend to prefer in a Genmai cha. It's decent but I don't think I'll be rebuying!
Great genmaicha. Would love to have a matcha-iri genmaicha made with this
Sweet and nutty and most terrifically green. This is a gorgeous genmai cha.
Comforting and delicious. I absolutely love the popped rice.
This is my favorite tea. Any time I go to a tea shop, I look for genmai cha. However, very rarely do I find one that actually tastes how genmai cha is supposed to taste. To me, it should be light, fresh, with a slight nutty and roasted taste to it. I am constantly disappointed when I buy this tea, except from Adagio. Their genmai cha is amazing. I resteep 3-4 times and it's good each time. I don't let it steep over 1 minute (usually 45 seconds for first brew is enough) otherwise it can get a little bitter.
The only other place where I have gotten good genmai cha is from Teavana but they are ridiculously expensive and very commercial. Plus I think they use pesticides in their teas. I order the largest size from Adagio every few months. Unless my sister visits, then I have to order more frequently since she drinks it all!
Really interesting smell and flavor to this tea. It's a good change from other green teas if you're looking for something a little different. I enjoyed it.
This is my first time trying genmai cha. While I generally love green tea, I think this one is just not for me. The toasted rice changes the flavour considerably -- it is stronger, more bitter, and has a 'roasted' taste, almost like it's been slightly burned. (It needs to steep for less time, or it becomes completely unpalatable.) I can see how some people--maybe coffee drinkers?--could appreciate it, but unless I'm pairing with certain foods, I do not.
I know people who really like this one, but it just isn't for me. It tastes like your drinking a rice cake.
I wanted to try something a little different, so I went for Genmai Cha. I have drinking tea for a long time now and can't believe this is the first time I have ever had this tea! I absolutely love it. The flavor is roasty/nutty/toasty on top of clean and crisp green tea. I was really not expecting how noticeable the toasted rice flavor would be, and surprised at just how well it works with the tea. This is a keeper, and just may earn a place next to my go-to Earl Grey.
This is my favorite green. The toasty notes change with each steeping. I get two good ones and sometimes a third. A great appetite surpressant.
I love this one. It has just the right amount of the toasty rice to soften the grassy notes of the green tea.
I love it! It's inexpensive, has a really pleasant nutty flavor, and can be steeped 2-3 times comfortably
This is an amazing cold-weather tea. I like to steep mine for around 4 minutes to release more of that lovely roasted grain flavor. I've never tried it iced, but I'm thinking it would be quite good.
I liked this genmai cha a lot. It was very flavorful, full of that piped rice flavor and less of the grassy green tea flavor (which is the purpose of genmai cha, right).
One of the best Genmaicha teas I have had. Already re-ordering. I temporarily tried another 'reputable' brand and it was unpalatable. Trust that this is a quality product.
Of the handful of genmai chas I've had over the years, this is my favorite. I'll be ordering more for sure.
Very good tea. But you have to be careful to steep it for a very short amount of time. Can taste too grassy or medicine like if steeped too long.
Heavenly, I drink this almost every day. It's also great for use in ochazuke. :)
really fun with hearty but not overpowering flavoe
This tea is more satisfying because it kind of feels like you're eating something, not just drinking tea (even if you don't eat the toasted rice pieces).
Not what I normally drink. I tried one that my son gets and I was hooked
I got the sampler, nice aroma, very tasty. Not sure what the popcorn does to the flavor, but its adds a nice look to it.
When carefully steeped for a short time and at low temperature, this is a really nice, toasty green tea. Careful though, it's easy to oversteep and turn quite bitter.
tastes great, nice and strong, reminds me of my mother land
Best Genmai Cha I've ever tasted with a mellow taste and nutty aroma. Opening the bag and seeing all of the little popped genmai was also a treat I tend to call it my 'pop rice' tea.
This is a light, yet full bodied tasting tea. Satisfying !
I'm sipping this as I write this review and it's alright. This is my first genmaicha, so I can't vouch for quality but it's pleasant enough. Very light savory/nutty flavor that tastes like how I'd imagine 'Popcorn tea' would taste. Good with savory meals and I prefer this over other traditional green teas.
Hi. I'm used to drinking Genmai tea but this seemed like overkill with the size and amount of Brown rice and whatever the white stuff is. And most of all, the tea tasted so much like grass that it was the only thing I tasted. Not going back for more of that.
Lovely genmai cha, nice balance of tea to rice. Very soothing.
adagio is the worst...do not buy from them ever...they are horrible
i'm not a huge fan of genmaicha but i decided to try it! I'm still not a huge fan of this tea in general but it's not bad
This is the best genmai cha I've ever had, toasty and delicious!
So I was quite intrigued by these little pieces of toasted rice when I opened my sample. And truth be told, they didn't disappoint. Nutty, clean, sweet flavor that made a cup of green tea so much better! As with all greens, be careful not to steep too long.
So different and so wonderful - nutty and very special.
For lack of anything poetic to say, this tea is kind of like drinking burnt popcorn? Which probably doesnt sound as good as I mean it to be. I almost forget this is a green tea every time i have a cup, because its not as grassy as you would usually expect from a green tea. Its warm and earthy. Just really different!
I purchased the genmai cha based on all the excellent reviews and was expecting a lovely sweet green tea with notes of rice cake. However, once brewed this tea literally tastes like seaweed! It has a fishy aroma and a kelp-like aftertaste. I enjoy eating sushi, not drinking kelp water!
My grandma loves this tea. She's never been a tea drinker but we went to a Japanese restaurant and she loved the tea they were serving. I asked what kind it was and ordered a bag of it for her as soon as we got home. The toasted rice gives this tea a warm savory flavor which goes great with a meal or on its own. The only downside is that you can only brew it once and get the full flavor. With other teas we generally brew them three times, once for 3 mins, once for 4 mins, and once for 5 mins.
I was between seasons with my regular Japanese sencha and chose to indulge in some genmai cha from Adagio. I am very glad that I did. Its toasty, nutty flavor is just perfect for enjoying a cup during the cold weather. It reminds me of my days at Misawa, Japan, which was the first place I tried it. I strongly recommend it. also, be sure to brew it in a kyusu - Adagio has them and others are readily available now. Enjoy!
I can't get enough of this tea! I ordered a sampler because I was a little skeptic, but immediately more once I tried it! This is definitely one of my new absolute favorites. It smells just like a rice cake. This is my new go-to comfort tea!
Updating my review: This is still my favorite green tea. It has such a nice toasted smell and taste that I feel compliments the tea perfectly. I enjoy this tea hot or cold, and it never lasts long in my house. I highly recommend this tea to everyone!
A nice genmai cha, toasty and a little grassy. Great for breakfast, too.
For those looking for a more hearty, flavorful, warm-tasting green tea, you have found it! Some people say green tea tastes weak, like you're drinking hay. This is definitely not the case for this tea!
One of my favorites! It's so great on a cold day with soup!
Eh, don't really know if I really like the tea or really hate it. The scent is very earthy and strong, almost like a herbal scent. probably the most unique tea I've tasted. Tastes exactly like green tea but has a slight overwhelming aroma with the popped rice. 1/10 would not buy this tea again.
Interesting!Tastes like 80 percent green tea,20 rice
Very good genmai cha! Had a good toasted taste without being too overpowering.
This is absolutely one of my favorite teas in the store. The warm nutty taste of the popped rice blends perfectly with the smooth sweetness of the green tea. I doubt I will ever get tired of this blend.
It has a very pleasant sort of fermented taste to it - definitely stronger than most greens but worth a try!
