I enjoyed today's Communitea sample. The pu-erh was not very strong, which I'm not sure was due to the sample or not, leaving the pu-erh quite mild. The chai and chocolate was fairly well balanced.
Smooth, rich and comforting. Our Chocolate Pu Erh Chai hits all the marks for the perfect afternoon treat.

I enjoyed today's Communitea sample. The pu-erh was not very strong, which I'm not sure was due to the sample or not, leaving the pu-erh quite mild. The chai and chocolate was fairly well balanced.
My tea had a strong chocolate aroma but a strong cinnamon taste. Really nice with a bit of cream and sugar
This chai was very good steeped at the recommended 212 degrees for 5 minutes. I had it with milk and sugar, and the spices still shone through just fine along with that additional chocolate flavor which isn't usually found in chai spice blends.
I didn’t taste chocolate but I tasted and felt the heat of the cinnamon. This was not for me.
Good lightly spicy chai flavors without the 'dirt' flavor I often get from a pu-erh tea. Unfortunately with the chocolate chips I can't put it through my Veloci-tea. Only for for a single steep, the second had color but tasted like water.
This was too spicy for me, as my communitea packet had a lot of ginger pieces. I think it would've been better if I had more of the other ingredients.
Not bad, but I don't like choc tea or choc coffee... the cinnamon was pretty strong. I still finished the whole cup!
Amazing tea! this was the first type of pu-erh tea i've tried. My friend told me that she had seen reviews about Pu-erh needs to be rinsed first otherwise it has a fishy taste but I had already made it without rinsing it and it tasted fine. no fishy taste. I'm a huge fan of chai tea so this with the chocolate flavor was really good. I think letting it cool down to lukewarm is the best time to drink it because you can really taste all the individual flavors better. I also add ~1tsp of honey
I don't normally drink chai so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that I liked this one. I think the hint of chocolate flavoring really balanced it out. For someone who doesn't normally reach for chai, I would drink this one again!
This is a delicious night time tea. The hint of chocolate was delicious and with the blend of Pu-erh and chia spices it was not too sweet.
Lots of chai in the CommuniTEA lately! The last few chais have been quite ginger-forward and this is no exception, but it’s fighting with the other flavors. Strong ginger + cocoa nibs + pu erh = an odd disconnect.
Did not taste like Puerh at all. Really interesting flavor. This was my first puerh blend and I didn't know what to expect and I am pleasently supprised
I only noticed 1 chocolate chip in my CommuniTEA packet today. When steeped for 5.5 minutes with boiling water, it was weak and savory. With sugar added, the chocolate and cinnamon become noticeable but weren't as strong as the ginger. I resteeped with less water for 6 minutes and the flavor was barely noticeable. Overall, this tea is nice but requires more tea to water than I used.
Spicy ginger, chocolate and cinnamon are all balanced with the Pu erh tea to create a chocolatey chai when I added cream and sugar.
I've had a sample packet of this tea kicking around waiting for me to try it, but it took getting the pu'erh chocolate chai as a mystery cup of the day to finally get me to sample it. The scent in the packet was characteristically low tide/barn, overlaid with a ginger-heavy spice blend; the rinse water was accordingly a little funny-tasting, so I opted to discard it and steep with a fresh helping of hot water. The resulting cup is chocolate and ginger forward, with the earthy softness of rinsed pu'erh lending a rich fullness to the bottom notes without the harsh astringency of a standard black tea. Since this is a chai, I used a heavier hand than normal with the cream, and was well rewarded. I'm looking forward to my next pot of this one! (15 sec hot rinse, 7 mins @ 200 F, 2 drops EZ-Sweetz, 2 tsp half-and-half)
This tea smelled really awful in the packet, to the point that I was a little afraid to try it! My daughter explained that pu'erh tea is fermented, and that what I was smelling was some leftover micro-organisms on the outside of the leaves that would wash off if I rinsed the tea briefly in hot water before steeping it. I did so, and wound up with an absolutely delicious spice tea that I only wish was more chocolatey. I might drop a couple of dark chocolate chips into it! (15 second hot rinse, 5 mins @ 212 F, 2 drops EZ-Sweetz)
When I first opened this, I thought that it smelled like a tootsie roll...a flavor I personally do not want in my tea. However, once I brewed it, the smell was much more spicy. I love chais, but this was my first pu’erh. I am not really a fan of chocolate teas personally, however I will be finishing my cup today. I think that if you like chocolate tea and you like chai tea, this would be a great option.
This is such an odd flavor for tea. I don't like chai, but I do love chocolate tea. The Pu-erh 'dirtiness' didn't add anything positive to this tea. That plus the yucky cinnamony sweetness makes this a no go for me.
I love the opportunity to try pu erh blends! I was excited when I picked up my CommuniTEA sample, only to discover that there was a hole in my packet! As a result, my portion looked to be smaller than a normal chai serving, so I cut back on the water a bit. Steeped at 200° for 3 1/2 minutes, the smell of chocolate and spice arose. The brew tasted of earthy smooth pu erh and lightly of chocolate, but the spices just seemed to be mismatched. I almost tasted a peppery flavor, but no peppercorns were in the mix or the description. Maybe ginger was trying to take the cup over? All in all, it was a pleasant cup, just not quite the flavor I was expecting.
The scents of spicy ginger and rich chocolate burst forth from the dry tea, ready to impart their flavors. A 5 minute steep at 200F creates a cloudy orange brew with a spiced-earth aroma.
Pu-erh is not shy in this blend, giving a strong earthy flavor, almost gritty. This pleasing base flavor is lightened by the heat of spices - cinnamon and ginger come through strongly, with clove just barely discernible. I think the chocolate gets lost in the pu-erh because it can't really be picked out as its own flavor, instead just adding a mild cocoa bitterness. You can bring it out more by adding cream and sugar, or rinsing the tea first to cut back on pu-erh flavor. I personally didn't miss the chocolate, since the pu-erh and spices were so pleasant.
The overall flavor of this tea is about 50% pu-erh 50% everything else, so fair warning if you're not a pu-erh proponent! But if you are, it's a tasty and unique take on a chai tea.
Gave these leaves a rinse before steeping as suggested by others. Made a latte; did not detect chocolate, mostly chai flavors. I sampled this Tea as part of the CommuniTEA February Box.
212 degrees for 5 minutes. Pu-erh tea, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, chocolate, cloves. Pu-erh is a fermented black tea traditionally produced in Yunnan Province, China, and frequently is packaged as puck-shaped “cakes.” Fermentation here refers to microbial fermentation (“wet piling”), which is applied after the tea leaves have been dried and rolled, and controlled oxidization continues until the desired flavor is reached. Fermented teas like pu-erh are also called “dark teas.” My cup of Chocolate Chai Pu-Erh today was very ginger-forward with light notes of chocolate and a hint of spiced earthiness.
I received this tea as part of the CommuniTEA box. As such, the portions may not be perfectly balanced or blended, and I receive a not-always-adequate amount of tea. This portion was approximately a teaspoon, which is about half of what I'd usually like. Still! On with the review!
The pouch, upon being opened, has the usual fake-chocolate smell that chocolate flavor always brings, with some wonderful spice alongside it (between the spices and the chocolate, my mother said it almost smelled like licorice). I can see the chocolate chips and spices, and while the small portion has me worried, I'm really looking forward to this tea.
I steeped it at 212 for the recommended 5 minutes, and it produced a slightly-cloudy tea with a strong red-amber color. It smells strongly of cinnamon, with some chocolate notes as well. In all, I'm remarkably looking forward to it. Upon first taste, the chocolate is a strong flavor note. Luckily, it's not overwhelming with the chocolate flavor (still not something I'm fond of), and the cinnamon is fairly strong. Upon adding sugar, the spices are brought out, with the best of the chocolate. Upon adding a splash of milk, the chocolate is mellowed and the spices evened out, leaving a wonderfully balanced chai with a wonderful chocolate undertone.
I didn't entirely taste the pu erh, but then again, I'm not entirely sure what that tastes like, as this is my first time experiencing such a tea. However, despite that missing, this is an excellent chai that I will likely be purchasing again for further enjoyment. The only reason it doesn't get a full 5 stars is because I don't entirely like the chocolate flavoring, and I'd much prefer this tea if it only utilized the chocolate chips and cocoa nibs.
My CommuniTEA packet had no chocolate so it was more like pu erh chai. I like chai spices so that didn't really bother me but I wanted the chocolate for the full effect. I did a 15 sec rinse for the first steep and then brewed for 5 min @ 195 F for each brew. I put a few chocolate chips in for the 3rd steep. I guess I put in too many because then all I could taste was chocolate pu erh! A splash of heavy cream made this divine!
I definitely enjoyed this tea! Tasted just like it's name, chocolate and chai. Two of my favorite things!
I really enjoyed this cup! To me, this tasted like a decadent chai! There was one chocolate chip in my CommuniTEA packet and otherwise all ingredients were accounted for. I could taste every ingredient, with ginger and cardamom lingering nicely after each sip and being stronger than in some other chais. I love ginger and cardamom so that works well for my taste buds! As it cooled the cinnamon came out more. The chocolate wasn't strong and had an equal role of the chorus of spice flavors, and so did the pu erh. Definitely had a different flavor than a chocolate chai made with regular black tea, and I liked the effect. Very smooth, no bitterness. The flavors went well with the earthiness of the pu erh, though I wouldn't say the pu erh comes out any stronger than the spices, which might not suit some pu erh lovers. I saw another reviewer say that they mixed this with pu erh poe or dante to allow the pu erh to have more of a voice, and I could see that being delicious too. I added some Adagio honey for black tea, and didn't add creamer because to me it was delicious with just honey. Would order this in the future! (5 mins @ 212º)
Another delicious puerh tea! As with most adagio chais, the cinnamon is the strongest flavor. The ginger comes through, as well as the chocolate. The chocolate isn’t overpowering, but works well with the spiciness of the chai. It’s a very smooth drink, as puerh tends to be. This may be my favorite chai now!
I love chocolate, but am not usually a fan of chocolate in tea. The chocolate in this tea though is a little subtle and it goes well with the other chai flavors.
Liked this tea. Tasted more chai spices than pu-erh earthiness (a good thing) or chocolate. I don’t think I noted any chocolate flavor at all. There are better chais though and I didn’t really get anything new from this tea. So I’d certainly drink it again but I’ll stick with my favorites for my chai fix.
I love chocolate and I love chai spices, so this tea is made for me. Smells almost like a chocolate glazed donut (which would pair wonderfully with this) but taste is heavy on the chai spice for me. I could use a bit more chocolate but am thinking some sugar added may draw that out.
I really liked this tea! It surprised me since I normally don't like teas with chocolate in them and I thought the pu-erh would make it funky, but for me it really worked. It was ginger forward, so I can see some people not liking that, but I think it was the glue to bind it all together and make it work for me. I did a second steep, but it turned out kind of bland. Tasted as part of The CommuniTea.
Chocolate meets spice; ginger flirts and winks it's eyes; earthy pu-erh sings (haiku review)
I am not a puerh drinker. It always tastes very 90% chocolate bitter dirt. Further that with more chocolate? Sorry there's not enough creamer to make this taste manageable
Trying this along with the CommuniTEA today: Wow! What a complex tea. I noticed lots of cinnamon, chocolate, and ginger from the dry ingredients and packet. Once steeped (5 mins at 212° F), I detect a nose of pu-erh tea, chocolate, cinnamon, and the cardamom joins in the party. When I take a sip, I notice a salty ginger sensation with a cocoa finish. As the tea cools, I detect more cloves and cardamom. For me, the chocolate is more of an essence that a taste. Interesting, enjoyable cup.
Yum yum yum! Chocolate? Chai? What's not to love? None of the astringency of black tea, all the flavor. The chocolate is the predominant aroma, with the chai spices the predominant flavor. Well balanced and simply delightful!
Pretty good, I didn’t get any chocolate chips in mine but did get a lovely chocolate flavor that lingers in the mouth. The clove flavor was nice and mild and the ginger was the great. Slightly bitter taste from the pu erh that blended well with the other flavors that almost make it hard to recognize.
If I were going to drink a chocolate-tea, I would pick “Chocolate Truffle” over this one. Nevertheless, this one is pretty good. I'll have it as my second choice.
So tasty! Very gingery for the first steep, loads of flavor. The second steep is much more mellow, on the earthy side. Super good.
Very chai- that seems to overpower the chocolate taste
I can’t sort out all the flavors in this one, but I know I really like it!
I am discovering my love for pu-erh teas. I found this to be a smooth, well balanced earthy chai tea. Enjoyed with cream and sugar...looking forward to a second steep!
The spicy chai flavor is fairly well tame, and it’s got a pretty nice smooth earthy base.
Love this tea. Really perfect chai flavor with a hint of chocolate.
On the one hand, it's pu-erh. I did a very quick rinse (about 5 seconds) to deal with the weird pu-erh flavor. But on the other hand...it has no other flavor. After rinsing, I steeped as directed, and it tasted like somewhat chocolatey water.
I was very happy with today's tea. It was well blended and no flavor was more powerful then another. The water looked a little muddy but it tasted great. I added cream to my second cup and had a totally better experience. Loved it!
I love it! Wonderful chocolate and spice flavor, when you open the bag, but very little chocolate flavor, when you drink it. Spice get less strong as the tea cools.
I am unsure how I feel about this. The first sips were really a dusty-spicy flavor but as I continued to drink it, it had a pleasant warmth and sweetness to it.
If you like chai and 'musky' teas, this will be for you. This was my first puerh, so I'm still unsure but am open to trying more.
This is a lovely tea. But I'm biased, I love pu-ehr. I find the chocolate stronger than the chai spice, which is why I deducted a star. But still tasty!
This was a delicious treat once I added some oat milk. The cinnamon flavor was very strong at first and the chocolate flavors came out as it cooled. Overall a very decadent chai.
Quite a bunch of chai ingredients were noted in my communiTEA packet this morning. The pu-erh appeared to be overwhelmed. The five teeny chocolate chips were just looking cute. I couldn’t wait to partake!
I did not do a rinse check on today’s tea for offensive tastes or odors. I didn’t want to melt any of my chocolate chips ahead of time … I wanted them all to myself. In the past I have found that fermented dark teas like pu-erh tend to be a little bitter when steeped in boiling water. I decided to use a lower temperature of 200°F. I did, however, stay with the recommended five-minute steep time recommendation.
When hot, earthy pu-erh flavors were mild. No offensive pu-erh tastes were noted. Chai spice and chocolate flavors were mild. I added a little sugar to intensify all flavors, but not enough to make things too cloyingly sweet.
When warm, pu-erh flavors were still mild. Chai spice flavors moderated. Pleasantly moderate chocolate flavors were noted.
Conclusion: Chocolate flavors are yummy when blended with pu-erh tea. However, I just couldn’t adjust to the combination of using chai spices with pu-erh. The resultant flavors that were left on my palate were funky. (5 mins @ 200ºF, ⅜ tsp sugar)
