Known for their bold character, Assam teas are typically hearty, malty brews — but this unusual production from the famous Meleng Estate is quite different from everything else the estate produces. First, observe the very tippy, curly-style leaf: a profusion of golden leaf buds contrasting visually against very dark leaves, signalling a harvest selection as close to bud-only as Assam gets. The dry leaf aroma is quiet and doesn't presage how sweet and gently layered the cup turns out to be.
Lighter bodied, softly fruity, with a delicate floral-honey finish — this special production is quite unique for an Assam, and a delightful demonstration that the same estate, and the same origin, can produce something entirely different when the harvest grade is exceptional. Where Assam Melody from the same Meleng Estate is the bold, malty, milk-and-sugar breakfast tea, Gold Leaf Assam is the contemplative counterpart: the tea from the same garden you drink plain, slowly, with full attention.
