Pu-Erh Dante Customer Reviews

A rare aged, fermented tea from Yunnan, China, pu'erh stands apart with its uncommonly soft earthy flavor and woodsy tones. Clean, damp forest aroma, dried mushrooms, leather, and earth. A slight sweetness of figs or dates yields a mellow, grounding cup.

I had to steep it longer than 5 minutes to get any flavor from this one, but it is very smooth and you can't really over-steep it. If you like a virtually smooth tea, this is a great option for black tea.

Very earthy and different than any tea I've ever had. I would love to be able to have this every day because of the huge jolt of energy it gives me, but unfortunately the very big jolt of caffeine in this variety is probably what makes my very sensitive stomach hurt when I drink it. I still enjoy a cup though, now and then when I need to really 'wake up'.

Good for several brews. Later brews become slightly sweet. Earthy almost cedar-y flavor. Aroma and flavor reminds me of the smell of hay bales and oak/hickory leaf litter (in a positive sense). Liquor is very dark mahogany. I don't drink it every day, but I like to have it as a permanent fixture in my collection. Great tea!

Little to smokey for my tastes. I suppose since it comes from The Inferno, I shouldn't be surprised. I gave my sample to a friend who adores it.

Wow I've never seen a tea that can rebrew so strongly so many times. I mean I should have expected that from a real Pu-Erh, which ive never had before. However I'm not sure if its just me, but this ruins my stomach. Leaves my digestive system in shambles for hours. Flavor is pretty good, I see what everyone is saying about the fishy taste, its not bad, but its not great either. Not bad overall, but not my favorite.

Deep, mellow and earthy. It's even better with a hint of acidity, a little squeeze of lemon juice gives it nice depth with a light bright finish.

I'm not really sure how to describe this tea. I wanted to try a pu-erh and wasn't sure what to expect. it smells very leathery and makes me think of a shoe store, and tastes much the same. while that doesn't sound appealing it's strangely pretty good.

My first time trying this type of tea, and I did think it was better than scotch. (Fair warning- I do not like scotch) I may attempt to combine it with the bonfire blend of herbal tea for more smokiness.
Best black.

Very heavy and leathery. Does a good job of waking me up with a taste of soil to accompany it.

While the tea was a good experience since I had never tried this particular leaf before I can most certainly say that I wasn't fond of it at all. The earthy taste was very overpowering and not at all pleasant.

Update: I wrote this review years ago, and it's amazing how things change. To date I now find that Pu-Erh Dante is an almost daily tea for me and pu-erh as a whole is definitely my island tea.

As a recovering coffee drinker, this stuff is great. I don't know about brewing it twice, the second pot came out really watery the one time I tried, but as a daily brew, it's solid.

I prepared this tea as part of a head-to-head comparison with pu-erh poe. The two varieties are immediately distinguishable from one another due to the predominance of bright hay notes in this one. It's smooth, pleasant, and highly drinkable. I ultimately like the hazelberry blend so much that I'd rather just keep buying it 16 ounces at a time and have it be my daily black tea, rather than keep both that and this on hand; but for those who are looking for an unflavored pu-erh for regular use, this one delivers excellent value for the price. (15 second rinse, 4 minutes at 212 F)

Having only had this tea hot before, I was so surprised by the flavors I could detect when it was cold (which dulls the flavor profiles of many teas I've found so far). This tea tastes... round (for lack of more specific descriptors). And the fruit notes were strong. While the description suggests figs or dates, to me it was more forest fruit or plum. But it doesn't matter. It's a lovely tea. And while I did drink it straight up in my flavor test, I'm thinking it'll be good in a blend as it's certainly a different flavor, and not one that screams 'Iced Tea!' when you pour a glass. But for the benefits of fermented tea alone, I'd love to work it into my final blend.

This is not drinkable. It is funky and smells and tastes like fish. This should not come to market this soon. Ripe puerh needs couple of years to get rid of this funkiness.
Try other good teas instead.

This is my go-to tea so far since I started working from home. More earthiness would make it perfect for my taste just like the pu- erh I used to enjoy when I was living in Japan.

I prefer raw Pu-ers but this one isn’t bad. Has that distinctive “earth”/leather taste, bold and invigorating. Steep as little or as long as you want, it’s very easy going.

I decided to give this a try as I've been moving away from coffee since it makes me too jittery. I felt like this gave me a good boost without it being overboard. Flavor is one most people will probably need some time to get used to, but I actually enjoy the earthy flavor.

Back when I was going through chemo for breast cancer, I experienced a common and very unpleasant side-effect of the medication: blisters inside the mouth, going down the throat and so on. Not debilitating, but REALLY uncomfortable and painful. Another patient mentioned that Puer tea had a soothing effect, and to the local teahouse (Seven Cups) I went. I had never tried any Puer, and do you know, it worked? The effect was brief and wore off about an hour after drinking the tea, but for a while the pain was lessened. Eventually I completed my treatment and lived on, though somewhat... flatter, let us say.

During the time, though, I became very fond of Puer teas. This one is delicious; it's more robust than most I've had, and that strange, unique mouthfeel is there. Present also is an odd back-of-the-throat taste that reminds me slightly of green pine-needles; it's hard to pin down. Love nearly smoky richness of this tea, the toasted taste and strength of it; I suspect it packs a whallop of caffeine, though I won't know til later. I'm finishing the first brew right now; the leaves are on a second brew at the moment, and one thing I recall loving from my time of waiting for the pain to go away was how the flavors of Puer changed with time-- I'm eager to see what this one does.

No, I have no basis other than my own experience to say that Puer teas of any kind have any sort of medical effect on cancer, chemo side-effects or anything else; but it helped me, and at the time, any help was a grace.

A beautiful, surprisingly mellow tea - becomes a very dark brown very, very fast, which had me worried I was over-steeping it, but true to the description it doesn't get bitter with more steeping time. The aroma reminds me of stepping into a tiny side-street Asian grocery, very earthy but in such a smooth way, definitely reminds me of mushrooms and fermented spices. Very easy to drink, if you want to like black tea or need something with caffeine but don't like the bitterness or strong tannin taste of other black teas, this would be an excellent one to try.
Update: literally left the strainer in the cup to continue steeping for 2+ hours, STILL not bitter- might try this one for iced tea!

Appearance: Very dark brown, nearly opaque.

Aroma: Fresh tilled soil and mushroom, the aroma is relatively light. Very similar on second steeping, with some wood and hay.

Taste: Very light earth flavor on the tip of the tongue. Becomes much stronger on swallow with the addition of mushroom, walnut, and light sweetness. Sweetness intensifies as the cup drains/cools along with some hay comeing through. Second steeping almost identical to the first, minimal muting of flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied.

Overall: This is certainly not a tea for everyone, most would describe it as drinking dirt. But that is part of the enjoyment of pu-erh, a unique flavor experience. Not something I would want to drink everyday but nice to savor from time to time. With this variety I did not need to do an initial quick brew/pour which is nice.

Very smooth, I love it. It turns a very, very dark color when you steep it and smells like Earth. I only steeped it for a few minutes and didn't really pick up on the 'fishy' that people talk about. I've seen someone compare Pu-Erh to something like, the Nice Whiskey of teas, and I would certainly have to agree.
