Smokey fish taste overwhelms my first sip. For the first time EVER, I am dumping the rest of my cup. This will be given away.
A rare aged, fermented tea from Yunnan, China, pu'erh stands apart with its uncommonly soft earthy flavor and woodsy tones. Clean, damp forest aroma, dried mushrooms, leather, and earth. A slight sweetness of figs or dates yields a mellow, grounding cup.

Smokey fish taste overwhelms my first sip. For the first time EVER, I am dumping the rest of my cup. This will be given away.
If you like a moss/earth flavor then this is the tea for you. My girlfriend hates this tea but I can't decide about it myself. The moss/earth funk is unique. I am not sure if I'll get more.
I bought this because it was the cheapest pu-erh. I've only had one another pu-erh, which was pricier, but don't have the palette to be able to tell a big difference in quality. Earthy and smooth. I loved it.
This tea sets the standard for a good pu erh in my opinion. It's just so average pu erh - it defines the blend for me.
I probably won't get this again, the smell of it was too strong for me. Though the taste was nice.
A very smooth, if deeply earthy, tea. For me, it smelled much stronger than it tasted, which was good, because the aroma is very overpowering, both brewed and in the bag. A great tea for when you want to feel more grounded. Just don't let your nose linger too close to the cup.
Pu erh is my favorite kind of tea, but it's beverage roulette. You just never know what you're going to get, even if you've had that brand before. So much impacts the quality. Well I've had better, but I have had much, much worse. Dante's a bit lighter than I'm used to, and I wouldn't suggest more than two steeps. But this is a friendly and approachable brew, and might be a good introduction to pu erh for people who are not sure why their tea tasting like the forest floor should be a good thing. If this tea is CONSISTENTLY this good, then that's a very worthwhile bonus.
At first I was very put off by the dried fish taste, but that particular flavour mellows as the tea cools. It's smooth and rich and it held up for three steeps without losing any of its depth. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who hasn't tried pu'erh before, but it's perfect for those who are already fans.
An acquaintance joked that when I tried to describe this tea, what I said basically boiled down to: 'I don't know what the hell this is, exactly, but it smells like fish and tastes like scotch, or like scotch would taste if it were not scotch. Five stars.' Which about sums it up.
When I first opened this tea, the stench of fish and wood threw me off so bad I refused to even open the package for the next month. When I tried it today, the smell had mellowed out, but it was still too fishy for me. I guess it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't my taste.
This is my first pu erh, and I have to say it was pretty good. It definitely tasted different than normal black tea, but I didn't get the fishy flavor others are complaining about. I also got 6 steeps out of one tablespoon, and it only began to loose flavor after the third.
Smooth, earthy, mellow, and a great base to mix with other teas. This is everything a pu erh should be.
Love this tea. Its perfect in the winter when I'm longing for hiking in the springtime. Definitely earthy tasting.
Love the rich, full-bodied color of this tea. It in the bag it almost smell like Japanese nori (very heavy ocean like scent), but when brewed, it tastes really vegetal. Like the damp forest floor or something. No need for sugar and milk with this one. It's a very unique tea, that probably isn't for everyone, but it has a great flavor. If you're unsure about this one, go ahead and try Adagio's pu'erh blends! They're quite delicious.
Distinct taste. Could drink it without sugar and cream ...but I'm kind of partial to my rich cups of tea.
dired mushrooms, leather and earth sounded like delicious flavor notes in theory, but I just couldn't enjoy this tea.
Fishy. Very fishy. Pu erh should not be this fishy. Seaweedy maybe but a very strong fish taste is indicative of a low quality, poorly stored pu erh.
At the first 10 seconds of the boil, it kinda smells like fish that's starting to go. But it mellows out into wet leaves. (though this is a good sign for a pu erh)
It has a spicy musk flavor, it's not unpleasant. It has a smooth and almost milky mouthfeel. It smells like fall.
It was too 'earthy' for me. I like my teas more on the sweet side. The flavor was intense. Do not let it steep for too long!
Earthy in all the right ways. Don't be afraid to oversteep, but don't add too much.
I was surprised by how much I like this tea. It smells earthy and a little leathery. The taste is reminiscent of mushrooms and autumn. This tea also works really well in blends
I've been sampling around the Pu Ehr catalog recently after a wonderful experience with Pu Ehr Poe. I decided to try this iced and boy, did it work! It's the best iced black tea I've ever had. No trace of bitterness even with multiple infusions. However, in its hot form, the taste of dirt is rather strong. Not unpleasant to my taste, but present.
I ordered 3 samplers of pu erh, the poe, the dante, and the pearls. of the three this was my favorite. It was the darkest richest of the three. there is a definite smell of the sea upon first brewing, that gives way to earth and barnyard. steeped over and over to get different nuances
Smells like someone lit a campfire at low tide and tastes like black leather infused with cigarette smoke. But not in a bad way. Although there is something quite masculine and sexy about this tea it isn't one I'd be able to drink too often.
A very unique smoky flavor, perfect for a cold winter's day.
This is my first try for this type of tea. I like it quite a bit, but I am still getting used to it. Very earthy.
The taste sort of reminded me of fish water... however my friend assured me that it was supposed to taste this way. I will probably drink the rest of it, but this one will never be my favorite.
Fascinating. I bought a sample simply because I'd never tried a Pu Erh. Other than, 'to me it tastes like liquid mud' I have no idea how to better describe this tea--in referencing other reviews, the terms 'forest floor', 'campfire', and 'mud' have come up, and yes, I tasted a bit of all three. I'm sure it's a fantastic example of a Pu Erh, but having tried it I've come to the conclusion that Pu Erh is great for other people's palettes, just not mine.
I was worried that I wouldn't like this tea beacause I had heard a lot about its strong, distinctive flavor, but luckily it turns out that I ADORE it. It's definitely strange as far as teas go and it might not be for everyone, but if you enjoy earthier flavors then you should like this tea!
I just had to try this. This is a unique tea, not for everyday drinking in my opinion. I washed the leaves first (dumped the first cup after one minute) and then brewed it, to lessen the fishy taste. It's dark, almost like coffee. It tastes like farm and dirt and leather. Not in a bad way, but in a way that I couldn't drink it often. But I'm glad I tried it.
This tea is hard to describe. It smells like mud and tastes like earth, while being entirely pleasant. To me, this tastes like musty old books smell.
This is the first pu- erh I've tried. This tea is certainly not for the faint of heart. The aroma is a little off putting from the dry leaves- rotting fish and something I'll describe as 'horse' predominate, though it is a light smell. The fish goes away after about a minute in the infuser, and the horsey smell gives way to a delicate leather scent. The taste is surprisingly subtle for such a dark tea- earthy, with just a touch of leather. Now, if you like to watch your tea leaves expand, you will be rather disappointed- the leaves don't expand much.
this is a nice one, mild and smooth a great one to start with the pu erh teas, well balanced and you can taste some of the subtleties easier than in the others
Very mushroomy. Gets fuller but less complex the longer you brew it, as the mushroominess becomes over powering. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan and won't purchase this pu erh again.
I have really mixed feelings about this tea. In the bag, it smells revolting, like bad fish, so I rinsed it in very hot tap water for a minute. But the brew smelled too earthy for my taste. Even with a bit of honey, it still tastes earthy. It's not bad, per se, but it's just not for me. I can't get passed the smell enough to enjoy the tea.
Definitely not for me. A bit strong. I thought it would grow on me from the smell, but I couldn't get through the first cup... I can see the appeal, but I'm not here yet.
You know how cans of whoop-ass exist? Well brew up some of this and you'll have a hot cup of whoop-ass. With tea like this, who needs coffee?
Incredibly smooth tea, but still full of earthy, sweet flavors. I could drink this any time of day.
Earthy, and smokey. It tastes sort of the way the earth smells after rain. I found it surprisingly good, though I suspect that it is very much a 'love it or hate it' type thing.
It's an incredibly earthy tea. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I won't be counting it among my favorites... on its own, anyway.
I made the mistake of not following the brewing instructions of this tea and it was extremely bitter but once I did it correctly it was great. Almost as good as coffee to kick start your day plus it helps regulate cholesterol and heart disease
Beautiful color when brewed. When I first brought the tea to my lips the initial thought from the smell was horse manure. This may sound gross to many but healthy horse, grassfed manure smells like earthy, grassy compost with a touch of horse. The tea has a definite earthy tone that for me ends with a faint old citrus which is not at all bad. I find it an introspective tea demanding of your senses. It is a wonderful cup for chilly evenings curled up with a book.
it's a very nice tea, however my boyfriend tried it and he described it as tasting like a barn. i like barns, so that isn't an issue, but it definitely has a very distinct, earthy flavor.
I've now tried enough types of pu-erh to conclude that it tastes like dirt and sour milk blended together. It's drinkable, but unpleasant. Though obviously plenty of people seem to like it, so it must be personal taste more than anything.
Earthy, as expected, but somewhat dull, unfortunately.
Pu er dante is a light pu ehr, not as earthy as some, and good with breakfast.
A really interesting taste that's not like other teas.
Tried it on a whim, unfortunately didn't like it. The aroma of fish is just too strong. Too earthy for my liking.
Pretty good pu-erh, not quite enough complexity for me but it has a pleasant earthiness and a subtle fruit note.
While some Pu erh's tend to have a fishy smell to them, the pu erh dante is very mild in this characteristic. You can more easily make out earthy fragrances like wood long before it smells like fruits de mer.
Not my favorite black tea though, it almost invariable requires some sugar to balance out the strength.
