Wuyi Da Hong Pao Customer Reviews

From the WuYi Mountains in Fujian, China. These oolongs are highly prized for "yan yun" or "rock taste." Rich aromas of roasted vegetables, sweet honey, river stones. Delicately spicy, rounded texture, pit-fruit flavors, and subtle peach juiciness.

Very light, not my favorite oolong. I love Tieguanyin for its deceptive mildness and other oolongs for the lovely toasted flavor. this doesn't really hit either of those notes and while it may be great for others, it isn't for me.

This tea is sweet, floral, and just a bit citrusy. I strongly recommend it.

This tea is expensive, but superb. A like to mix it 1 part to 3 with yunnan gold, it's majestic.

While I don't have a problem with this tea, I could barely detect any difference between the regular Wuyi Ensemble and this master's version. All in all, not worth 3.5x more.

Decided to splurge on some samples of the Masters collection. Definitely an excellent tea, though I don't find it superior enough to be worth the extra cost to my unrefined palate. Beautiful golden color and great flavor. Stands up quite well to multiple steepings (Third steeping was still great, and the fourth is still looking good).

One of my favorites of the Masters - rich with 'rock taste.' That said, I'm not sure the difference in quality between this and the excellent Wuyi Ensemble is enough to justify the difference in price.

Not as good as Fujian Rain in my opinion. I was hoping for a stronger mineral taste and it just wasn't there. It was subtle with other flavor undertones that are hard to descirbe. It does stimulate the sences and each sip seems different than the first.

I love that this tea, like many great teas, has some kind of story line behind it. Great straight tea that is complex, very re-steepable, and wonderful. I didn`t taste any of the mineral taste everyone commented about- my palate must not be advanced enough, but I did taste smokiness and kind of like a 'dry' taste that was lovely.

This was my first time trying one of the 'masters.' Of course it was delicious but it was not any better than the wuyi ensemble, which is my favorite adagio tea. Maybe my sense of taste is not very refined, or maybe my expectations were too high.

The minerality here is nice. Not too much, but it Still does seem like some granite is in the bottom of the cup. Good oolong flavours, tending towards the dark/med.dark side, and brews an interesting mouthfeel. Very minute quality to it. Flavourful tea which should be experienced at this selection's price point.
-My one complaint is that the minerality disapears SOMEWH T in subsequent steepings. first steep being 3 all the way to a minute.

I've recently tried a number of oolongs from Adagio and elsewhere and none of them have really captured me or had that mix of subtle flavors that once made this type a favorite. Until I tried a sample of this one. It has that underlying earthiness with volatile overtones (peaty? tobacco? honestly, there's a bit of a... hemp overtone to the smell) that really give you something to roll around in your mouth and leave you with a satisfying aftertaste. n oolong that can compete with my more recent love affair with Keemun and other aroma-rich teas.

This tea is amazing! I was not crazy about it at first, but after i ran out of the sample i bought i found myself craving this tea. I cannot even begin to describe what this tea tastes like. rock flavor or roasted vegetables is not a good description. One thing i must say is that the 'Wuyi Ensemble' and the 'Fujian Rain' both taste very similar and COST MUCH LESS than this tea. In fact they are so similar that i will never pay so much for this tea again and will stick with the other 2 oolongs.

OK, 'rock taste', yup now I definitely understand. When I ordered it, I was thinking this would be a subtle thing, like an old world wine with a taste of 'terrior' from where it was grown. Well that's exactly right except for the subtle part. This tea definitely tastes like a rock. It's also a complex and interesting cup with a slight smokiness, but the mineral flavors are very prominent. For me it was too much rock for my liking, although I am glad I tried the sample and have certainly learned from this tea.

There's a lot going on with this tea. It's difficult for me to compare or rank with the other oolongs I've tried, because it's difficult to discern just what this tea tastes like. It's definitely good, and it has a somewhat bread-like taste, for lack of any better description I can come up with. I don't know that it's quite worth the price, however.

Way more delicate than I expected. I was hoping for another roasty, nutty tea like the Wuyi Ensemble, but instead this tea is much, much lighter, with more mineral and chocolate notes. For the price, I don't think I qill get it again because it's not flavorful enough for my tastes.

This is a wonderful tea and should be appreciated, as it is very expensive! I have ordered the sample size a handful of times and always treat it as a luxury, reserving it for special occasions and honored guests. Do not be surprised by the small quantity that comes in the tin, as the large, open-style leaves do not lend themselves to efficient packaging in small containers. Though it is very expensive, this should be enjoyed as a true treasure: one of the finest teas in the world! The taste is smooth and cooling with tastes like minerals and rainfall.

I am a fan of rock oolongs, and this one is wonderful. Perfectly balanced and mineral, as you'd expect, and faintly sweet. Great for multiple steeps.

This tea is one of the better ones I have ever tasted. Full of flavor. For me I use a little sugar and that doesn't overpower the tea.

Coming from the perspective of a person who treats drinking tea like eating food, not an art form, I can say this is a decent tea.

I'm sure connoisseurs would classify it as 'legendary', but to me, it has a nice astringent taste, with a tiny sweet note to the finish. Now when I say astringent, I'm not just fancying up 'bitter', it actual has that rough feeling against your tongue.

If you want to really enjoy this tea, add a bit of sugar, it helps bring out the sweeter undertone.

All in all, it's a good tea, but way to expensive. I'm still looking for a favorite tea that's affordable for everyday consumption :P

This tea would be a regular for me if not for the cost! I'm no tea connoisseur, but I love the mellowness of the tea, and the slight peach aftertaste. The first oolong that I've truly enjoyed.

Lives up to all the hype! What a fantastic tea. Wuyi da hong pao has the full 'rock' taste it's famous for- a strong, mineral flavor which is comforting and gets better with multiple steeps. This tea is expensive, but when you consider that each serving can be brewed 4 times with equal enjoyment, the price is close to that of others- so well worth it. Wonderful flavor and excellent health benefits. Follow the directions for this one and you won't be disappointed- I brew mine 4 times at 3 mins each at 212 degrees. All the steeps are great- but 2 and 3 are the best. Enjoy!

I grabbed a sampler of this very expensive tea to see what I'd think. I'm kind of relieved that I wasn't crazy about it. I prefer the much more reasonably priced Wuyi Ensemble over this.

Hate to say it gang, but the higher the price the better the tea. This wuyi da hong blows away it's cheaper cousin the Wuyi Ensemble. From this day forth Wuyi Ensemble is merely a working class tea.

The Wuyi Ensemble is perhaps my favorite tea from adagio, so I had high expectations for this. It's more delicate, and perhaps complex, than the Ensemble, but in the end I prefer the Ensemble's more intense smoky, almost Scotch like flavor.

Personally I was a tad disappointed with Adagio Wuyi Da Hong Pao and personally enjoyed their cheaper Wuyi Ensemble more. Da Hong Pao is the lighter of the 2 wuyi oolongs offered by Adagio and it has a slightly fruity taste to it. The brew is still light and sweet but there is none of the rich earthy taste that goes along with a good roast to be found in this tea.

This wuyi is exactly what I would expect from a good quality dark oolong: smooth and earthy with slightly sweet, fruity aftertaste. Wuyi is my favorite Saturday morning brunch tea, and this one is no exception.

I do have a hard time distinguishing between this Masters Collection tea and the regular version of it though, which is why I leave it at 4 stars. It could be that my sense of taste is not as highly developed as I thought!

After trying the samplers I was sure I would buy a larger amount but which one to choose as they all were so good?
I was torn between Golden Curls and Wuyi Da Hong Pao. Finally went with Wuyi. “Roasted vegetables” or “peach” doesn’t in my opinion describe this tea properly. It’s so complex, rich and absolutely wonderful. It certainly brightens my day. Worth every penny!
