It's a perfect pick-me-up. It's good on it's own but I generally blend it with some of the more overly flavored teas I've tried. Follow the package instructions and add lemon for the best results.
Argentine Yerba Mate with lively, tangy, herbaceous notes. Faint hints of tobacco and grass. Contains caffeine.

not my favorite when hot, slightly better when cold.
This tea starts with a sweet-ish flavor then changes to a muffled flavor. I tend to be more sensitive to mate caffeine than caffeine in other teas, so I usually avoid teas with this ingredient. (150F for 2.5 min)
This tea pleasantly surprised me! I wasn't sure it would offer anything [taste-wise, as you certainly get caffeine], but it was a little dark, a little deep, and earthy. Had a light nuance, though it was largely one tone otherwise. A guy warmer, although otherwise in the middle for taste.
This was a light tea that did not have grassiness for me. I added 1/2 tsp cinnamon whipped honey and that was all I tasted. I really appreciated the caffeine without the jitteriness.
I thought this tea was just meh. It didn't have a real flavor to me and just kind of sat there. I do not drink coffee at all so I had my sister try a couple of sips to see what she thought (given it was suggested as a coffee substitute). She had a more positive reaction - she thought it had a decent flavor and could see it being an option. 150 degrees for 5 minutes.
I’ve found mate to be great for an energy boost. Yerba mate has an interesting flavor. I tried this sample plain and with honey.
This one is definitely not a favorite for me; the tea has pretty pronounced grassy-ness that I would think would be like eating leaves off of a tree. It had a bitter edge note that became more pronounced the more I drank it as well. Overall, not for me!
I am not a fan of grassy green teas. I decided to cold-brew this one in the hood of calming that down. The first sips of it were okay but a little grassy. I let it sit out of the fridge for 10-15 minutes and tasted it again. I then noticed a slight bitterness with the slightly grassy taste, and less of the other flavors I had initially noted but can’t describe. If I were to have this again, I would sip it over ice.
Mild earthy /toasty aroma. It has mild and grassy/earthy notes. I added honey.
I enjoyed this tea, through all four steeps. It reminds me of a nice, earthy, mineral green tea without much grassy flavor at all. I didn’t notice any smokiness either. I just enjoyed the flavors throughout the four cups and felt no desire to add any sweetener. I steeped as close to 160 degrees as possible after a cold rinse of the leaves. The first steep was for 5 minutes and the red for 3 minutes.
I've always wanted to try Yerba Mate, so im glad it was a plain one in the communiTEA. When I opened the packet it smelled like a fresh pile of autumn leaf's. When brewed the tea has a greenish color. It does not smell like anything to me. It also does not taste like anything to me either.
communiTea has too much Mate lately. It is not my favorite.
Not the worst but not a favorite. Tasted very much like a green tea, but turned bitter as it cooled.
I am just learning about mates not sure I like it but it may grow on me.
CommuniTEA portion: 3 minutes at 155 ish. Kinda Herby. Kinda grassy. Not a bad sip. Appreciated the high caffeine.
This not for me at all. I have enjoyed mate when blended with other teas, but not stand alone. Too earthy.
I’m not a big fan of grassy teas, so this isn’t up my alley, but I will say that I wasn’t overwhelmed with the grassiness. I could drink a whole pot of this if it was the only tea I had and I do like the caffeine content.
This tea has a very light and delicate flavor reminiscent of green tea but with none of the grassy bitterness some greens teas have. I highly recommend this tea for anyone who wants an energy pick me up with no chrash, no jitters and no strong flavors.
For new mate drinkers: Mate is a wonderfully energizing coffee alternative. The flavor is similar to a mild green tea - sweet and vegetal, but it has a quality that is completely unique. This is a great place to start if you're curious!
For seasoned mate drinkers: I found Adagio's mate to be milder and sweeter than others I have tried. The flavor is beautifully round while still being subtle. Highly recommend this mate!
Pleasant, mild herbal flavor. Not quite as smoky as I remember, maybe just due to the low brewing temperature. An easy drink overall.
Tastes light and grassy. Fine tasting tea that I wouldn't turn away but nothing that I would get too excited about or purchase again.
I’m not sure how to explain the flavor except somewhat earthy and very pleasant. I found it relaxing and tasty.
UPDATED 10-14-22: Today's CommuniTEA is Yerba Mate. Upon opening my packet, I had a fantastic amount of tea. I brewed it hot with some rock sugar, just like I did before. I'm not sure what, if anything, that I did differently, except maybe brewed a smaller amount of it, but it tasted better than before. It's not the best tea I've ever had, but it was good. I finished the entire cup. As a result, I have upped my review from 3 to 4 stars and I can now say I would definitely recommend this tea!
ORIGINAL: I brewed my Yerba Mate hot with some rock sugar. I tried not to steep it too long, and I did let it cool a bit before I drank it, but even despite the rock sugar, it just had such a strange aftertaste. It was so weird, it's almost indescribable. It wasn't horrible, but this may be one of those acquired taste teas. Or, maybe because it's so plain, it'd be better blended. At this time, I am not sure if I would recommend this tea, to be honest.
I enjoyed the Yerba Mate, which I brewed for three minutes at 150. I didn't detect any grassiness but rather a mild, delicate mint. Hubby tasted nuances of fruit. So far it hasn't caused me to be jittery so I am hopeful I can drink it without any of the reported adverse effects.
In the bag: Just the mate. Light, brittle flakes of small to medium size. Color ranges from a light yellowish green to a light greenish yellow.
On the nose (pre-steep): Mild intensity. Gentle, clean grassy notes. Hints of herb, though I can't place the type. A bit sweet.
On the nose (post-steep): Light intensity. Same grassy flavor. The herbaceous background note is gone.
On the tongue: Medium intensity. That clean grassy flavor is center stage. A faint toasty note also, like lightly toasted white bread.
Opinion: A straightforward tea with no frills. The clean grassy flavor is pleasant and simple. Though not my favorite, this will do in a pinch. The recommended time and temp are perfect.
Preparation: 4 min @ 160 ℉
An herbal tea that tastes like a green tea. It has a natural grassy flavor. This is a great alternative to black tea if you need help waking in the mornings.
You’re probably buying Yerba mate more for the effect than for the flavor, but that said, Adagio’s Yerba mate is fresh and everything you’d expect.
UPDATED from 11/28/20: There are small, light green leaves that appear to have been cut into little squares, and a smell like minty grass when the CommuniTEA packet opens. Excitement grows since this is the tea of South America! After steeping, the leaves now smell more earthy, woody, and the tea’s aroma is pungent. The color is a delicate pale yellow. The flavor is woody, with a creamy mouthfeel and a light finish. No bitterness or astringency is noted. As it cools it takes on more of a hay aroma and the taste is slightly smoky. Adding ¼ teaspoon of sweetener (to 10 oz) makes this much more pleasant to drink. Even though this tea has so many great benefits, I am aware this should not be drunk in large quantities on a daily basis, as there can be some negative side effects. Everything in moderation! By the way, this tea will be great on ice. ( 3 mins @ 150ºF, ¼ teaspoon of sweetener).
Perfect coffee replacement. Mix with peppermint and/or lemongrass. It’s a light tasting tea, not too strong. Needs a lot of sweetener
Good amount of caffeine, and a nice herbal flavor; it is on the grassier-flavor side, so if you enjoy matcha and green teas, this is would work well for you.
Very earthy and smooth. I really enjoyed with a little cream and stevia as a first cup of the day
Wonderful! I love all mate teas adagio has to offer. Yerba mate is great... but much better mixed with other herbal, and other teas to make a great blends.
This is a nice Yerba Mate, but I also like the flavored. When I'm in the mood for a light tea but need an extra kick, I just put a tsp of Yerba Mate to give me that extra boost. I especially use this particular Mate for the low caffeine Zodiac blends.
very good nice tea, lovely flavor, I really like it
Love it! Excellent morning tea. Great flavor and not overpowering. Just the right amount of caffeine to wake you up nicely. @adagioteas
So green and grassy and delicious! Especially great when you want the benefits of caffeine, and want to leave the coffee jitters behind! A favorite among our customers.
Delicious. Bought a small bag and fell in love. This will be a repeat buy for sure. @adagioteas
A sweet, but not cloying aroma was noted from the tea leaves prior to steeping.
Following the lead of another reviewer, I added 2 Tbsp of cool water to the mate to prep it for the hot water. Water heated to 160° F was then added to allow for a steeping temperature of 150° F. The tea was steeped in a 12 oz mug and 11 g of tea sugar was added to the mug prior to steeping. The tea was steeped for 5 minutes for the first steeping.
I noted a sweet, grassy aroma from the freshly steeped tea, which reminded me pleasantly of a green tea. I was delighted to taste a corresponding sweet and grassy flavour that I have often noted with green teas.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first steeping and steeped my second cup in much of the same manner, only I steeped the tea for 3 minutes instead of 5. I found the second cup just a pleasant as the first.
This is a tea I could easily see becoming a staple in my tea stash.
UPDATE 12/8/2021: this time around, I’m noting an almost nutty flavour as the tea cools… yummy! 😍
I'd been wanting to try Yerba Mate for a while since it's always touted for its supposed herbal benefits, but whether those are valid or not, I really didn't enjoy the taste of it enough to drink it regularly. It tasted earthy, but not in the soothing, semi-spiritual way that some herbal teas taste earthy; this one tasted earthy like if you licked the bottom of your shoe after walking through a public park. I have never tried another Yerba Mate, so this isn't a knock on Adagio -- I just don't think this tea is for me.
While I love toasted mates, I'm really not a fan of regular mates. So, y'know, this was fine, but not something I'd ever drink of my own volition.
I haven’t had plain mate in a long time. Adagio’s is mild with a slightly sweet, herbaceous flavor. One cup hasn’t given me the jitters, but I’ve learned not to overdo it with mate. Steeped 3 mins @ ~160°
Mate by itself is not as horrible as I had anticipated, but it is not my favorite.
I hate to tick a box that says bad, but this just isn't for me, I've only found a few teas that I can handle Yerba in, and I suspect it is a very minimal amount because this stuff gets my heart thumping, it's like Neil Peart set up shop inside my chest! Happy to try it I dislike not liking teas but this is a miss for me.
A bit too smoky for my tastes. It has a pretty strong woody/smoky flavour to it, and a bit of underlying bitterness.
Nice tea. Steeped at 150°F x 3 minutes for the first cup, which had toasty and smoky flavors. My second steep was untimed and tasted more herbal. I enjoyed both cups with a little sweetener. Didn't notice any caffeine effects.
I love all these Mates!
I love the caffeine with a smooth aftertaste
Really interesting, complex flavor. Some underlying bitterness to my tongue, and it’s doesn’t taste like tea tea.
At two minutes, this tea is sweet and light. By 3 minutes it is grassy with a cotton taste. I really feel the caffeine from this, much more than regular tea. I think I prefer toasted mate better, it has more depth, but overall mate is not my tea of choice, and yerba mate seems to be my least favorite mate offering.
CommuniTEA packet tasting, an herbaceous, greenish, yet light tasting mate. I prefer toasted mate over this. Nice pick me up when you’re dragging. Happy sipping!
