Tencha Customer Reviews

Tencha, the tea base used for making matcha, is a delicious and rare find. Tencha brews a cup much lighter in color than matcha, but with similar body and flavor. Can be brewed as-is, or ground to create matcha.

I am so glad I 'discovered' this tea (okay, so it was one of the lovely tea experts at the Skokie, IL store that turned me onto it). I came in just to get a cup of gyokuro (my favorite), when she told me about tencha. It's mild and grassy (vegetal, as she described it), but the best part is that it's tough to oversteep. Have you ever forgotten that your teapot (yes, an entire pot) was steeping for the last 20 minutes because you got distracted by work or laundry? I know I have. With tencha, it's not wasted -- in fact, the flavor seems to grow more intense, but not bitter. It's become a close second favorite of mine, right after gyokuro, and I drink it more often because it's a little more cost-effective.

It's interesting to taste the tea before it gets grind into matcha. It does have a reminiscent flavor of matcha but not as astringent.

The taste is very green and fresh.

The first time I made this tea, I prepared it according to instructions. I wasn't initially a fan. The second time, however, I steeped it at 175 for over 2 minutes and the flavor was much better. It has a rather subtle flavor that is really quite nice.

Exactly what I'm looking for in a green. Earthy and a little sweet, with none of the bitterness.

★★★★★

A lovely green tea! It has a nice bold, rich earthy flavor.

I love this tea. I bought it with a friend and we split the bag. It was around $30 for a big bag.

Tencha is a truly classic green tea. Slightly grassy, a bit sweet, and no bitterness. It is a very good tea, and I could see myself drinking it every day, but I still prefer sencha.

This green holds up to a very high temp and multiple brewings unlike many other more delicate greens. Still has the full flavor and almost sweetness of sencha.

This tea was yummy, smelled a little like spinach.

★★★★★

Tastes EXACTLY LIKE matcha, but without the whisk.

I'm just obsessed with this tea. It has an amazing flavor. sweet meets grassy meets nutty...its just amazing. Watch the temperature of your water, as with all greens. Try it.

★★★★☆

Very grassy, good flavor, but not any better than a sencha for me personally.

good flavor, but too mild for me. Good starter tea for someone who is just starting out with green teas.

★★★★☆

Very green earth taste.. Not really what I would buy on a regular basis.

★★★★★

Sweet grassy and delicious. Everything you want in a Japanese type green tea.

Way better than stuff I first tried...kinda pricey

I personally have never had tencha before this so this was something that seemed interesting to try. I enjoyed it and it since it's the base for Matcha you can really taste that without the bitterness that usually comes from consuming Matcha.

The sweetest, mellowest green tea I've ever drank, miles ahead of gyokuro. One of my new favorites.

Though typical for tencha, the resulting tea is bland. Go for it if that's your thing.

I'm still new to the whole tea scene and I bought the smaller pack of this variety unsure of whether I would like it or not. I will say that next time, I'll be ordering the larger pack. I really enjoy this variety. It's got a pretty light flavor, just a hint of sweetness, a bit grassy. It's a very mellow tea and I would highly recommend.

This tea, when brewed correctly (I used 175 for 90 seconds with a little extra tea, maybe 1.2-1.5tsp per cup)is smooth, sweet, light, flavorful. It is exactly what I want out of a green tea (I am not fond of Chinese greens) and it is good for 2 additional brewings after the first (same temperature and time)

I really tried to follow the brewing instructions on this one, keeping the water a little cooler and steeping for a full 2 minutes. The dry leaves are very fine and soft, I could see how this would be crushed to make your own matcha. The dry leaf is not overly fragrant, smelling gently vegetal and nutty. The tea brewed up a very pale green, and was delicate in flavor, tasting similar to how it smelled: gentle, grassy, vegetal flavor, sweet in a natural way, with a pop of more barky, nutty flavor at the end. This is a tea with a lot of potential. I will have to try cold-brewing it, and maybe even crushing it for matcha.

★★★★☆

A sweet vegetal green tea, almost like a gyokuro but not quite there. Flavor was very light. While I liked this quite a bit, I didn't feel it was worth the extra price. I'd rather have a bargain priced green or pay the extra bit for gyokuro.

★★★★☆

This is a great mild Japenese green tea. I am more into the nutty, roasted taste of green tea. This is more of the veggies taste, but I still like it a lot. It is not as strong and frothy as matcha, but it still has a strong flavor and gives great energy. A nice morning tea, this lasts for two or three steepings.

I ordered this as an afterthought. Too many times I am disappointed with green teas, but this was a pleasant surprise. Smooth and almost sweet, found this refrefreshing iced as well. Really glad I found this!

★★★★☆

A nice, light tea. But I'd take matcha over this any day. Steep for at least 5 min to get a mild matcha flavor.

Firstly, I prefer both matcha and sencha to the tencha, due to the former two seeming to have a stronger flavor than the latter. That being said, the tencha is still very good. It is lighter and more delicate than the kinds of green teas I normally prefer, but that could be a pro instead of a con for some folks, I'm sure. It has the sweet-ish taste of matcha in a somewhat simpler form, though perhaps a bit 'leafier,' if that makes sense.

Delicate, mild, and delicious. It brews up a beautiful bright green color. I prefer to brew it just a bit stronger by adding a little more tea than recommended, rather than oversteeping it, for best results. It can be considered expensive but well worth the price.

I like this form of matcha because it's easier to prepare! Very good flavor!

★★★★★

Another great green tea. I have never tried Matcha so the Tencha is a whole new experience. Very very light color, nice light slightly sweet taste but I think a little nutty. This is a nice light tea for evening, at least for me.

Such a flavorful cup, well worth how much it costs. A green tea that I very much enjoy.

★★★★★

As far as Tenchas go, this is top notch. I give it 5 stars because I've had other Tencha teas and this was the best I've tried. The downside to Tencha tea is how very light in flavor they are. It's not gonna be for everyone and it's not my first choice as far as greens go, but still an amazing tea.

I'm not a big fan of matcha to start with, so I wasn't sure if I'd like this tea or not. I think it's one of my new favorites!

Wow - this is amazing! I had no idea. I will definitely be ordering this again. Sweet, vegetal, but also light. Smells similar to matcha but not as much effort to brew when you're half awake.

This tea was milder than I was expecting. Slightly sweet and very vegetal. I loved it!
