Tencha Customer Reviews

Tencha, the tea base used for making matcha, is a delicious and rare find. Tencha brews a cup much lighter in color than matcha, but with similar body and flavor. Can be brewed as-is, or ground to create matcha.

Slightly sweet and vibrant, a bit vegetal although not as strong as other green teas. The dregs didn't turn bitter after steeping in the pot.

Update! I actually added 7 grams to my kyuso, and let steep for 2 minutes and poured into a cup. Much stronger flavor. Not quite what I have had before, but it was better.

Absolutely no flavor. I'm going to try again using my kyuso rather than following the instructions on the package.
I had some amazing tencha from Japan, but this is not it. It would make a terrible matcha.

A bright, rich green tea, bursting with flavor. It's like a lighter matcha flavored tea. A paper filter or tea bag is best for making this tea as it's so fine, it will go through a tea strainer.

★★★★★

I was very conservative when brewing this green cuppa. I see some were saying its 'weak', but I rather enjoyed it as being 'delicate'. A very nice reset kind of tea, heart chakra vibes.

Adagio’s tencha is sweet and mellow. It steeps up a pale yellow green color and has a nice mouthfeel. Buttery and nutty notes detected with hints of vegetal green tea flavor. Winner! Cheers!

This is a nice cup of tea. It tasted like matcha but lighter. I was hoping it would lean more towards a gyokuro taste but that is not the case. It is also made of fine or small leaf and quite a bit of it slips through my infuser. I will have to use a paper filter bag from now on.

Big, leafy and green. Very vegetal taste with a hint of matcha powder. My type of tea. Would get this again.

Quite honestly I was not sure what to expect of this tea. I made a pot of it for my hubby and I to share for our afternoon tea break. It was a breath of fresh air...lovely, light, not grassy, slightly vegetal. I could sip this tea all day. I am planning on getting a larger bag of it while it is still available.

The scent of this tea is a little grassy, but the taste it delicious. It's crisp, smooth, it's not bitter, but it's a little bit vegetal. This is such a soothing cup of tea that can be sipped all day.

One if my favorite teas. It has a smoother taste with less bitterest

This is a smooth and buttery tencha. It is very similar to gyokuro but with a lighter taste.

I've read reviews this tea before but had to respond, finally. Tencha can be brewed in the same way as Gyokuro , i.e.: temperature. But Tencha is only half the weight of Gyokuro or Sencha tea leaves. So you have to steep more leaves. Also, because Tencha is lighter, the leaves might float, depending on preparation (press the tea leaves down into the water if you want/care). It should have a lighter color. I have an automatic tea leaf grinder, so I can make matcha, but steeping gives a really elegant clean tasting and pure green-colored tea which I almost prefer to matcha. I still get the same effects (wakefulness and clarity without the jitters).

This is my favorite green tea! It is savory, smooth, and so comforting. It's my go-to morning tea.

This tea is very smooth and has a very bright flavor. We used it in the GritTEA Grinder for MATCHA. I think it worked out fantastic.

★★★☆☆

Not my favorite, I thought it was really weak and had hardly any taste, but I would doctor it up with matcha.

★★★★☆

This is a good tea, I do prefer sencha over this one, however it is just personal preference

★★★☆☆

The taste was somewhat grassy for me. I think it comes down to personal preference. I wanted to try this type of green tea for its higher caffeine percentage. I prefer a hearty less 'grassy' flavor. It is a good quality tea but it just wasn't my favorite.

★★★☆☆

Had an ok flavor but was expecting more from this tea

It is very crisp, fresh, nice green tea flavor. I like it shortly brewed.

★★★★★

Perfect, light and tasty. I really love the Tencha from Adagio.

It was too strong and bitter for me.

★★★★☆

Tencha is very good. This tea is light and simple- less complex than it’s gyokuro counterpart with the stems and veins.

★★★★★

Love the taste and that it can be ground to create matcha tea.

★★★☆☆

I was sadly disappointed with this tea and definitely agree with other reviews that say it lacks flavor. It tasted mostly like water with the slightest hint of green tea. I have started adding it to other green teas to use it up.

I wasn't blown away by this tea by any means but it was tasty and makes for a good cup of tea. Very vegetal and mineral tasting, with some background salinity. Reminds me a bit of the
Anhui Emerald Seed; which I enjoy more than this tea.

★★☆☆☆

Very disappointing. Despite of being outrageously expensive and being advertised as; ' matcha, but with similar body and flavor' the promised flavors of 'sweet green vegetables and a cup that offers vegetal notes and a hint of roasted nuts.' did not come through. In fact about the only flavor, I I noticed was that of boiled water. A rare miss so I advise saving your money on this one

★★★☆☆

I expected more flavor from this tea. It was just OK.

This is definitely a high end tea and worth the price. Complex grassy taste with a smooth finish. If you like strong flavorful tea, I would brew an extra 30min. Richer flavor without turning bitter. If this were a red wine, it would be an expensive California Cabernet.

Having read the description, I was really looking forward to this tea. VERY disappointed. This tea has absolutely no color or taste. Clearly something wrong with this batch>

Having read the reviews, I had very high expectations for this tea. And it did not disappoint. Personally, I have never cared for gyokuro tea, but matcha is a favorite, so I thought this tea would probably split the difference. I actually might like it better than matcha. It's very light but very pleasant. It's got a surprising sweetness to it, and it doesn't taste too grassy. It smells like steamed edamame, has a delicate, smooth mouthfeel, and a savory finish. It's a little pricey, so it's only an occasional tea for me. But I will definitely be purchasing this again.
Update 3/28/2018: The last batch of this I received has been entirely undrinkable. I have tried brewing it multiple ways and at different temperatures between 160 and 170, but it's just bad. It has very little flavor, and what flavor it does have is very bitter. This might be a bad batch, so maybe they should take a look at their suppliers.

I make Matcha out of this Tencha leaves and it has a very intense, fresh and delightful smell. It has a subtle flavor with a bit of sweetness. Besides the smell and flavor, the tea has a wonderful pushing and fresh effect and helps me to work more concentrated.
I'm impressed and I'll definitely order this Tencha again!

WOW!!! This tea is fantastic. I like it this way better than grinding for matcha.

Like Matcha, but creamer and lighter. A worthwile cup of tea.

★★★★☆

I tried, and enjoyed, Adagio's matcha tea. Since tencha is the base for matcha, it made sense to give this tea a try as well. The leaves are a beautiful dark green color, and the scent is pleasing. The brewed tea is light and sweet. It's has pleasant taste and, compared to matcha, I would say that it is a milder one. There's nothing wrong with this tea, but nothing that made me go 'Wow!' after I took a sip. The flavor, while pleasing, doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it.

This is one of my favorite green teas. I drink 1-2 cups most afternoons!

★★★★☆

A very 'green' kind of green tea. No match for adagio's matcha but perhaps a decent sub if you run out.

★★★★★

This had a really nice, bold green matcha flavor. Very interesting.

★★★★★

If you like matcha you ll love Tencha! Very beautiful green leaves that produce a very green liqour. Flavor is pretty sweet but also vegital - it s a nice balance.

This is *the* green tea taste you think about when you think of hot green tea. It's tasty, and will probably become a staple in my tea collection.

★★★★★

A wonderful tea that naturally pairs well with sushi (or anything else that hits your fancy).

★★★★☆

A good green tea. Has no bitterness and brews well. Gives a little kick in the morning.

★★★☆☆

This tea tasted okay to me. A good green tea, no bitterness and very light. But it tasted like boiled edamame. Very little of the grassy/seaweed/brine flavors that I like in Japanese teas. Like I said, a good green tea but the flavors were just not for me.

Not a fan of Matcha, but this tea is really incredible!!
It s definitely a different experience than making Matcha

Good mild taste, nice and smooth. I do 3 minutes or it is too thin.

Not the best green tea.
What I don't understand why this tea so expensive.

★★★★★

I was so pleased to have the opportunity to try this tea. I'm a lover of both matcha and gykouro and this is lighter than either of those. Perfect for those who want a light, green tea that isn't too vegetal.

★★★★★

Great tea with an earthy/grassy delicate taste. I steep it a little hotter and a little longer than the directions suggest, but I found it brings out more flavor this way.

★★★★☆

The fragrance of the dry leaves is fragrant-grassy, though more on the grassy side. The leaves are small chips, similar to the dried basil in your spice cabinet. Even with more than the recommended portion, the tea remains nursery room yellow. It doesn’t get very strong or very bitter. It has a light grassy flavor and you wait for that bitterness that comes with so many Japanese green teas but it never comes, disappointingly or happily, depending on your preference. In fact, the light flavor that is present evaporates off your palate quickly, almost too quickly for me personally. (This in contrast to teas with “delicate” floral teas or some Chinese green teas where there is not a necessarily strong flavor but the flavor does linger.) The leaves do not expand no matter how long it steeps and, after about 30 seconds, the flavor seems to be fairly constant.

On a scale of “I love it!” to “Bleh!”, this is “I like it.”

Love this tea. It's my 'go to' green tea. This tea has a very gentle flavor without being astringent. I drink 2 cups daily for health reasons as well as I just enjoy the flavor. It brews into a beautiful light greenish-yellow color and is perfection no matter what you serve it in. Brew gently and you will not be disappointed.
