Kukicha Customer Reviews

A playful steamed green tea from Japan. Kukicha is a blend of leaves and leaf stems. The lightness of the stems becomes a sweet sesame seed or chestnut note. Tender like soft white rice. Balanced and, for a Japanese tea, very low in astringency.

★★★☆☆

I was not the biggest fan of this tea. It looks very unique but it has a stronger 'grass' flavor than some other green teas.

★★★★★

Smooth and slightly earthy. Makes a great cold brew!

Kukicha is one of my favorite green teas. This steeps to a buttery, savory cup with not too much grassiness, but enough to tell that it is very much a classic green tea. It does have a toasted sesame or tender rice taste to it like the description says, which I very much enjoy.

Pretty good, though I don't know if I'd get it again soon. It has a nice flavor, it's just not necessarily interesting on its own, and I tend to lean toward new and interesting flavors. I might get it again some day as a base for my own blends though..

11/13/25 update: In the Spring I like to get a medium bag and go through it over the warmer months. I love seeing the unusualness of all the stems mixed into the dry tea. I think it's not everyone's jam but I enjoy it.
I like Kukicha enough to have bought it a few times, and somehow never reviewed it! Definitely a savory tea but with a fresh crispness. The Adagio description is perfect and explains what makes it unique. To me, kukicha kind of hits the balance between fresh and comforting. I like it year round, but I think of it as a Spring tea. 2 mins @ 180º F

Brews up a lovely pale green with the flavor of matcha. Will be buying more of this as soon as it is back in stock.

Unfortunately, this is not it for me. I did not like the taste.

We love this tea. It has a strong flavor and can be re-brewed. Nice fresh, grassy flavor and a lovely color in the cup. Pretty much the classic green. Don't overheat the water - the flavor is lighter and sweeter.

Not too grassy, and it's nice and complex. I like to combine it with Sencha Overture to gain even more complexity.

This one was pretty tame for me in the grassy vegetal notes, but those flavors were still present throughout the cup. While still hot it definitely has a nutty almost toasted taste and I agree with some saying sesame seed flavor. I did enjoy it more as it cooled a bit and became for me pretty much a baseline lightly grassy green with a very buttery texture. I think this one would also hold up to multiple steeps, but have not tried yet. 180° 3 min

One of my favorite teas. I love the grassy flavor in this tea and the delicate aroma. It also supports several steepings.

a very green green tea. it's got a tinge of savory, and generally is my go-to plain green tea for its vibrant flavor. only docking a bit because it has a strange smell in the pack (which might just be my own perception/what it's meant to smell like) and i think adagio's may be a bit powdery or something-- with my 3oz package, the first cup had so much sediment at the bottom.

This was a wonderfully soothing tea. It has a very mild flavor that is pleasant yet perfect as a warm beverage served to several friends who all liked it!

10/10 would buy again. The penultimate grassy green tea. Doesn't look like much but it packs a big flavor.

Not bad, not my favorite but I would drink again...

i really liked this one! mild and green flavored, it wasn’t too bitter at all. the flavor isn’t for everyone though

Very traditional green tea. Has the fullness of a Gyokuro, but with less grassy/floral hit on the front end. Honestly it’s perfect.

Kukicha's not sweet
She is savory and green
Singing, hips swaying

Kukicha's sultry
She dances through the tall grass
Slowly sliding through

Sumptuous greenery
Seductive in scent and hue

Very good green tea!! Light and refreshing!! Would definitely buy and recommend.

★★★★☆

i haven't had many green teas but i enjoyed my communiTEA sample!

This has a really nice, light flavor. Although others describe it as grassy, I almost would say it's more like hay, in that it's light and not too vegetal. I really like it's bright flavor and would def drink again!

This is a wonderful green tea! Simple and fresh. My favorite green tea that doesn't have any added flavors to it, just pure.

A fantastic green, brewed an 8 ounce cup at 160 degrees for 3 minutes. A superb vegetal taste with a natural sweetness

This tea is very grassy, which isn't my favorite. However, there's a nutty undercurrent which tones down the grassiness. This tea has a delicate quality, kind of fancy; it's to be sipped and not gulped. I steeped for 2 minutes at 180 degrees and drank it straight.

Part of this is that I am not a fan of green tea, and I can see some green tea lovers gravitating towards this tea. To me, even when steeped at 180 for 2 min, it comes off as very grassy and earthy. A little too vegetal for me.

Once again I failed to use my temp presets and also steeped too long. So - bitter but my fault. I can tell it’s a nice classic green tea.

CommuniTEA sample: 2 min @ 180 F, successive steeps at 2.5 min @ 180 F and 3 min @ 170 F. Kukicha is probably one of my favorite green teas. It's sweet And toasty without being too grassy! I do think that I prefer a slightly toastier kukicha, but adagio’s is very nice in that it is sweet and creamy. There are still a lot of typical green tea aspects, if you don't like green teas, you probably won't like this, but if you like that kind of subtle sweetness and hints of toasty, nutty flavors, you will really enjoy it!

I'm not a big fan of green teas, but this one was on the nicer side. When I opened the CT packet, there was a hint of sweetness in the aroma. Once brewed, it had a light, toasty taste with very little of the vegetal flavor I tend to associate with green teas. Brewed the tea in 12oz of water and 1 Splenda packet for 7 min at 212 (forgot to let the water cool some first).

It's green 💚 It is light and very vegetable. I think my water was a tad too hot as it taste a little bitter but still very drinkable. A nice green.

I put 3 minutes in for my steep time, but I usually slightly under do that (closer to 2.5). A nice grassy green.

Delightfully mild, delicate tea. Mostly twigs, not entirely unexpected given other reviews and this type of tea. It has some of the same chlorphyll notes my Panteger matcha has (culinary grade,) almost like a wheat grass shot. I am super sensitive to astringency, so I generally underbrew my green teas to avoid the tannins. I treat this one almost like I am making a good cup of matcha--delicate heating, no oversteeping, minimal honey or other additives. I enjoy this one hot in the morning and evening, and chilled during the rest of the day. Which, btw, this tea is one of the few with caffeine that isn't supercharged--it's mild enough I can enjoy it in the evening for a few extra hours of alertness, without being up until the butt-crack of dawn. Delicious over rice with an egg, too! It also lends itself to the majority of my fruit tisanes when I want them to have a little bit of caffeine (although I may prefer sleeping dragon, or jade snail, if I am feeling froggy/depending on the flavor profiles.)
In my quest to find 'the perfect iced green tea with honey' for the summer, this comes in *high.* 9/10 easily, maybe even 10/10 (my hesitancy comes from knowing there are a lot of other green teas out there to try, but those other teas have a hard hill to climb to come close to this one.)
If you're fencin' it, investing in a sample is the way to go. I said screw it and bought a 3 oz bag for my first purchase, and was not disappointed in the slightest, though, so you do you. It's crazy how different all the different types of green tea can vary from one another; I would recommend this tea to anyone and everyone, whether you're a connoisseur that just hasn't gotten around to trying it yet, or a new enthusiast just starting their tea journey---I consider this tea to be one of those that everyone should try, if only to appreciate how different harvesting seasons/locations, different parts harvested, and different preparations can change the flavor profile so dramatically.

One of my absolute favorites when it comes to green teas with no additives. There's a nuttiness and an oiliness to this tea that not all greens have. Not like, peanut nuttiness, more like sesame oil. Mild without being dainty, this is one of the teas I'd use to introduce a friend to quality green teas. Oversteeping can cause bitterness, so be aware of that. Takes honey or sugar well for sweetening.

I'm a big fan of this one. It's a good green tea, just be careful of steep time. If you steep it for one and a half to two minutes, it tastes great. If you do two and a half, it tastes a bit bitter. If you do three minutes, forget about it. The steep time should really be "2 minutes."
