Hojicha Customer Reviews

Green tea from Japan that is rendered brown by roasting Bancha (a summer crop tea, harvested after Sencha) tea leaves. An Adagio customer favorite, with a toasty nutty flavor and slightly mesquite note. Earthy and warm quality, soothing finish.

This was my first time trying Hojicha. It is very different from other green teas. Hojicha kind of smells like roasted corn and also tastes like roasted grain. This one also has a very slight sweet aftertaste. I recommend giving it a shot.

I need more of this in my life ASAP. There was nothing more calming than an entire pot of this as I worked on homework.. I'd describe it as nutty and warm and roasty, with none of the grass-taste that some oversteeped green teas can get. 5 stars, 10/10, A+, my favorite thing.

★★☆☆☆

I did not like the flavor of this tea. Too flower-y for me.

★★★★★

This tea is an absolute favourite! It's super smooth and has a nice nori flavour. Good on its own, but also tasty with a little agave.

★★☆☆☆

this was 'not our cup-of-tea' as they say. We don't tend to like green teas, but tried it anyway. I was too grassy for us, but if you like green tea you might have a differing opinion

★★★★★

My new favorite green tea! It has such a nice flavor

★★★★★

This has a pretty strong sesame flavor to it, but I really love that about it. It's a very soothing, savory cup of tea.

Very delicious. Reminded me of toasted sesame and genma chai.

This is a very unusual green tea. It turned out much darker than a typical green. It is very mild and nutty, with hint of toastiness. Very nice for a cool autumn afternoon.

A very nice tea with a pleasant nutty flavor. I will definitely purchase again

My son and I started the Passport trip to Japan with this tea. It was the best of the three teas we sampled. Everyone should experience the teas in the Passport program. It takes you on a journey through different countries through their teas. Way to go Adagio for creating this program!!

★★★★★

A great tea! I'm a black tea drinker but steeping this tea for just under 2 minutes at 180 degrees made a tea almost darker than many of the black teas I drink. It tasted sort of nutty and barley-ish but very smooth. I loved it.

★★★★☆

I purchased the loose tea, and it contained many woody stems among the tea leaves. Other than that it has a lovely toasty aroma and flavor!

★★★★★

I absolutely love this tea! It has a really nice mellow, nutty flavor.

★★☆☆☆

This is why I love Adagio - I can get a small amount of tea to test, and if I don't care for it, I still earn 3 points for reviewing - makes me feel appreciated without a big investment. In this case, hojicha just didn't do it for me. I'm sticking to my oolongs and rooiboses - until a new flavor comes out, of course.

★★★★☆

This is good stuff, has considerably more twigs in it like Kukicha would. But it does not take away from this tasting great.

This tea has a nice nutty flavor and is great for a morning cup of tea.

★★☆☆☆

I expected more from this tea based on the description and reviews. I was disappointed.

★★★★★

I love the smoky flavor of this tea. It's really good as an iced sweet tea, because the flavor balance works so well. So recommending.

This doesn't seem like a green tea at all. I don't get any vegetable/grassy taste. I like the nutty taste. it reminds me of walnuts. This was very mild and soothing.

I love this hojicha. I probably have about 2 cups a week. Sweet and nutty tones with just a bit of smoke.

★★★★☆

Very light in flavour but still good. I had to brew it longer than instructed, but I also like stronger teas.

★★★★★

Interesting, unique, sophisticated. Very grassy and botanical flavors but in a balanced good way.

★★★★★

This is actually reminiscent of a grain tea, in my opinion. Probably the roasting.

★★★★★

I brewed it for the suggested 2 minutes, and it turned out lovely. Very light, soothing, with a great toasty aftertaste. Great for when you want something light on your tongue.

I love pungent and earthy green teas and this really fits the bill. It was recommended by an employee at the Chicago store and I could not be happier with it.

★★★☆☆

This tastes like a more mellow, liquid form of the nori they use to wrap with some sushi. I really dislike nori, but this tea doesn't have an overpowering flavor, so it isn't bad. Not one of my favorites, though.

★★★★★

How did I ever live without this tea. For some reason the first time I had it I was not impressed but others in my household liked it so I reordered. Now I can't live without it. Like Genmai Cha it is always comforting...and delicious.
Two years later I still agree.

I really enjoyed this tea! I'll definitely reorder

Personally, this tea was not for me. I actually felt like it tasted like a weak cup of coffee. I suggested it to my sister, who is a coffee drinker. Normally, I do not take cream in most of the teas I drink, but it would probably complement this one well

★★★★☆

This is my first Japanese blend. Complex is my best description. There is a time for old favorites and a time to experiment. After more mugs of this blend, I will be better able to describe it.

★★★★★

Wonderful tea for evenings. Warms you up like nothing else.

★★★★☆

Had I based the review solely on aroma, it wouldn't have been very positive. But the taste is curiously smooth and stands up strongly for such a short brew time.

★☆☆☆☆

Worst tea I have ever tasted. It has a very strong earthy flavor. If that's what you are into then this is the tea for you.

★★★★★

An absolute favorite. Great, flavorful green tea without a hefty price.

★★☆☆☆

I tried to like it, I really did. The aroma of dry earth is strong, and this appears to translate directly in to a tea with an overpowering grass-like flavor. Very faint smokey and nutty flavors are present but do not come close to balancing this one-sided tea. I tried to vary the temperature and steep time to no avail, all I kept getting was grassy earth water. The one positive is that the finish is surprisingly crisp and clean with very little lingering on the tongue. I will stick with the Gunpowder which I feel is a much more well-rounded earthy tea.

★★★★★

I have tried one other companies Hojicha and this one here is so much better you get that earthy flavor with the arroma of dark chocolate. love it

★★★★★

This tea has a very delicate, earthy flavor. Will definitely order again.

Mild. The boyfriend likes to drink this when he's looking for a casual 'all day' tea.

★★★★★

It has a wonderful smoky character and brews up a nice pot.

★★★★★

Tasted just like Hojicha from Japan. Would recommend.

Roasting the green tea has added depth of flavor. However I prefer Genmai cha.

I love this tea! Probably my favorite non-herbal tea. I love the nutty flavor. Perfect for afternoon.

★★★★★

it smells kind of like tobacco or something when you steep it, but the flavor is rich and smooth and smokey. A new favorite for me!

★★★★☆

Different than any tea I ever had not a bad this I really liked it.

★★★★☆

I would say this was a good tea but not a great one. By steeping it for 4 to 5 min at 180 degrees instead of 2 min brought out a much better flavor. You could really taste the nutty and toasted flavor.

★★★★★

This tea is really great! I was running out of greens and decided to pick this as my free sample at the end of my order. I want to say it reminds me of Black Dragon Pearls, but also still has notes of the green tea it is. A nice herbal (rather than grassy), smooth taste with light chocolatey notes. Would definitely order again! :D

I had kit kats flavored with hojicha in Japan, and they were so very good. I was hopeful that this tea would be equally delicious and was not let down. All adagio's descriptions of this are very apt. Earthy, nutty, and toasted.

★★★★★

This one is roasted and toasty-it's the least 'green' green tea I've ever had. Overall smooth and easy to drink. Highly recommend.
