Hojicha Customer Reviews

Green tea from Japan that is rendered brown by roasting Bancha (a summer crop tea, harvested after Sencha) tea leaves. An Adagio customer favorite, with a toasty nutty flavor and slightly mesquite note. Earthy and warm quality, soothing finish.

I was nervous to try this but fell in love at first sip. It's earthy, smoky, nutty, complex, and delicious. Very unique flavor. Reminds me of mate but I much prefer hojicha.

Such a unique green tea. A good toasted and robust flavor.

★★★★★

Love this green tea with earthy tones and with just a touch of honey.

This is a fairly typical hojicha : a smoky green tea, with lower caffiene (usually) than most green teas. There's nothing standout aboyt this tea, but if you enjoy smoky teas, you will probably like this.

★★★★★

The tea that got me into tea. Very savory, rich, and nutty. I prefer it brewed stronger.

nice afternoon tea, has a bit of a roasted flavor but not overpowering.

★★★★★

This has a nice nutty earthy flavor. No bitter aftertaste.

★★★★★

Very satisfying, especially first thing in the morning, better than coffee plus not all the caffeine. Not at all grassy like many green teas. By far my husband's favorite green tea.

★★★★★

Very smooth. You can definitely taste the toasted quality; reminding me of nori. Still has a bit of a grassy and slightly woody taste.

★★★★★

5-stars because its the best Hojicha I've tried over decades. Perfect balance of sweetness and roasted seaweed. The salty sea/ seaweed flavor works in a good sushi-like way. The roasting takes away the wet grass flavor dominant in green teas allowing other flavors to dominate. If I could drink a Japanese garden overlooking the sea-- this is what it would taste like. I drink it almost daily after lunch, by itself, giving it my full attention so I can enjoy its depth.

First Hojcha I ever tasted. Amazing toasty green tea. Very earthy. I think those who don't like umami teas like sencha would really like this. I usually bro this and take to hike with me.

Very dark green tea, with a strong roasted flavor.

★★★★★

Earthy and almost mineral flavor, I did brew gong fu style and it was OK not my favorite

Very good toasted nutty flavor, kinda reminds me of beer wort (cooked beer before fermentation).

Delicious, it is earthier than the Sencha Overture.

Hojicha has always been one of my favorite teas, so when it popped up on my recommended teas to try, I couldn t resist purchasing it.

Holy smokes this is delicious! nice and woodsy but not overpowering... love it!

★★★★★

I fell for iced hojicha during a hot early-fall trip to Japan. This isn t the best I ve had but it s good for the price and perfect for pitchers of iced tea.

★★★★☆

hojicha is an acquired taste. i have not yet acquired it. but i'm sure those who like this sort of thing will like this sort of thing

This is smoky and great. I tend to drink this when I want no vegetal notes whatsoever and just really want that burnt smokiness to come through. This is different and I like it for that.

★★☆☆☆

I could not brew this in a way that wasn’t bitter.

★★★★★

I love this stick like tea. Its hard to describe; you should just try it. Its kind of a perfect brownish green tea. Great flavor, maybe slightly smokey, not bitter at all.

★★★★★

Surprisingly strong smell. Not usually a fan of green tea but this one is nice and light compared to what I expected when I first opened it.

Very good, similar in flavor to a roasted tieguanyin. Definitely would go well after a meal.

Honestly this is the best green tea I ve ever had. It tastes like toasted seaweed in the best possible way. My go-to evening cup.

This tea is so nice! I have never had hojicha before, but it s actually already near the top of my list. It has a surprising amount of sweetness and nuttiness to it, toasted to perfection and smooth as heck. I definitely recommend it if you are a fan of delicious flavor.

Hojicha is one of those teas that seem to be consistent among vendors. It doesn't have as much flavor as a good Sencha but acts as a nice palate-cleanser.

★★★★☆

Delicious and lovely. Reminds me of sesame ice cream.

★★★★★

soothing and subtle, it's strong for a green tea but not too caffeinated

★★★★☆

I love Hojicha for the low caffeine and tannins, and the earthy roasted flavor. I found this Adagio one to be good, but not the best I've ever tried.

★★★★☆

Great for an extra boost of caffeine in the office! Love the earthiness and round flavor. Not as bitter as other green teas.

★★★★☆

A nice nutty , almost puffed rice taste, I enjoy this one.

Nutty, naturally slightly sweet, light roasted flavor, this one is wonderful for those who want to enjoy a green tea that isn't grassy, vegetal, or floral, I absolutely adore roasted green teas but this one is by far a favorite

This was... a little baffling, frankly. It could just be the batch, but my sample was extraordinarily seaweed-savory, and the toasty and nutty qualities were sadly lost to me. I was tempted to sub it in for seaweed in a broth or soup. It's not bad though, and it was nice to try a non-green green.

★★★☆☆

Not what I’m looking for in a tea, I don’t like it on its own. I’m going to mix this to use it up.

Well...this just isn't my cup of tea. To me the aroma coming out of the bag was very off putting and it tastes a little like a roasted alfalfa cube. I guess I just like the greener and grassier types.

A new favorite! Ive never had this before and first cup was great! Smells warm and nutty and tastes toasted nuts to me.

★★★★★

One of my favorites. This roasted tea is nutty and flavorful. I love it on any cold morning.

This is my go to morning tea. Surprisingly concentrated, and very woody. Nice on a cold day.

★★★★★

warm and toasty. it has a pleasant smell and the taste is smooth

★★★☆☆

It has a nice nutty taste, however it seems a little weak. I'll let it steep a bit longer next time. The nutty flavor comes comes out nice in the aroma.

I love this roasted tea. I often mix it with sencha premier to give my morning green tea a light roasty flavor. I first had hojicha while visiting Japan and was obsessed. I couldn t remember the name exactly and then I finally found it on Adagio and I couldn t be happier.

★★★★☆

Lovely Hojicha! Very delicate and toasted flavor makes this a really nice tea to drink on the cold rainy days. I usually like my tea as is with no sugar or milk/cream. But this one also makes a lovely milk tea too!

Flavor is very nice. I find it a lighter tea and sometimes that is what I want. There are times I gravitate towards less flavorful teas and this is one I like for those times.

Another great tea I will include on my regular rotation. This will be the smoother than the most but consistent with out the bitter bite. Smokey and earthy

★★★★☆

Not the best Hojicha I've had but still fits the bill!

★☆☆☆☆

I think I wasn't please with how it looked. But, again. It was my first time tasting something other than black tea.

Hojicha's main flavor is 'smoke', which is a nice change of pace. It doesn't taste like any green tea you've ever had. This hojicha is mild - I've had hojicha that tasted like drinking liquid smoke, which is unpleasant.

Agree with Adagio's description - love the warm soothing finish!

★★★★★

This is my evening relaxation tea. A darker tea due to the roasting process, but very smooth.
