Gunpowder Customer Reviews

A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

classic chinese green tea. try cold brewing - removes any astrigency. otherwise be sure to steep at a lower temperature

★★★★☆

I love this tea and will definitely purchase more. My only complaint is that there are more stems in it than I would have liked. Note: this tea expands significantly, so make sure to steep in a large enough apparatus.

Turns out I am just not a fan of green tea. No matter how much I try and like them, they just are not for me. I will pass this on to a family member who enjoys them more than myself. I just cant get past the vegetal taste.

★★★★★

The quintessential green tea. It is full bodied, but delicate. Be careful not to over steep though. It's kinda finicky in that sense.

This tea is great by itself, but what I really love it for is to make a spearmint green tea mix. This is a wonderful green bases to throw in some spearmint leaves on top.

Nice full flavored tea. I put a little honey in it and love the taste. I recommend this one.

★★★★☆

A fresh, mild tea with a hint of smokiness on the aftertaste, paying homage to its namesake. The flavors are well balanced with the potential to go well with many accents. Enjoyable on its own or with honey or sugar to taste.

I hadn't tried Adagio's Gunpowder before, but I took a leap and purchased a 3 oz bag right off the bat--and I'm glad I did! Very fresh, slightly smoky, moderately grassy, excellent floral/jasmine notes on the back of each sip. Wonderful to blend with spearmint for Moroccan Mint. I'm a bit of a weirdo who loves the flavor of tannins, so I sometimes let mine steep a bit longer than recommended on purpose and it is exactly what I want. This became a part of my regular rotation after one cup.

My husband and I drink a pot of green tea each every morning. After years of drinking through a gifted stash, we found a tea we would enjoy drinking every morning. This was the winner. This tea goes down smoothly and provides just enough kick to wake us up and keep us focused without keeping us up all night. I don't see us changing teas anytime soon.

★★★★☆

I bought this as a gift for a family member. We haven’t yet shared a cup, but the scent and cut of the tea is wonderful.

★★★★★

This is a strong and delicious green tea with a very bold flavor.

★★★☆☆

Not as good as I remembered. Green tea flavor was not very present.

★★★★☆

A surprisingly sweet smell greeted me when I opened the bag, not at all what I was expecting but alluring nonetheless.
The taste is a nice, bold Green flavour, with high hay like notes and a quality depth I find hard to describe. There's a mild smokiness that seeps through like an old friend, and while I wouldn't quite classify this tea as having a bold taste, maybe hardy would suit it? It doesn't overpower, but it perseveres, and has a soft mouthfeel I find myself drawn to.
Good on it's own or with a little lemon.

This is our go-to green tea at our espresso bar, and people love it. The smokiness sets it apart from other green teas. Some of our baristas advise people to blend it with peppermint for a really nice hot tea.

★★★★★

Exactly what I expected. The most violent form of Green Tea. Objectively the best green tea.

Green tea is good, Gunpowder green tea is the BEST! It's my daily brew, light enough caffeine I can enjoy it after dinner without getting the jitters but just enough for that lunch time pick-me-up

★★★★★

I'm always a fun of a sturdy gunpowder tea. This one does not disappoint

★★★★★

This tea is delicious. Tastes like a campfire. Warm :)

★★★★★

A great smokey green tea! Unfurls beautifully when brewed, smells like a leafy soup and is deliciously smokey and tasty like the green teas you have at Japanese restaurants.

★★★★★

My go-to everyday tea! With the distractions that come with being a mom I love that you can't over steep this tea.

★★★★★

This almost feels like a savory tea. And really makes me want to eat yummy dumplings.

A fantastic green tea- it’s definitely a more mild one, which I love, because I find that it’s very easy to ruin green tea by making it too bitter. Very smooth and pleasant to drink.

Not normally a fan of green tea but this is pretty good.

★★★★★

Mild flavor and very smooth. I will purchase this again.

My favorite green tea. I am sensitive to bitter undertones, and many green teas have those, especially on subsequent infusions. This is more forgiving. I like the smoke and mineral flavors.

★★★★★

Smooth and neutral, noticeably green but avoids crossing into the realm of grassy. The smoke, however, is very light and only emerges with a longer steep.

★★★★★

Gunpowder is a staple green tea for any green tea lover, and Adagio's version of it is delicious. It's always a joy to watch the leaves unfold in the cup as the tea brews.

★★★★★

Mild but a bit smoky; slightly darker and stronger than most green teas without any bitterness. A good mid-afternoon tea

★★★★☆

Classic gunpowder green tea. Very smoky flavor and dry feel, noticeable astringency. Pours very cloudy, with lots of leaf fragments. Not particularly nuanced, but not bad. I would give 3.5 stars.

★★★★★

i love the Gunpowder tea. The flavor is really enjoyable... i like it so much I bought some for my son-in-law who also enjoys green tea.

★★★★★

I love this green tea. I really like mixing different teas together and this one goes with nearly everything I've mixed up.

★★★☆☆

This green tea has a rich, earthy flavor. It is very standard -- nothing too exciting, but for the price, it makes a great addition to my tea collection.

Out of the pouch, it doesn't have a pleasant smell. It kind of reminds me of the smell of fish food. Once brewed however, I can see why it's so popular in blends. It has a smoky, grounding flavor that can smooth out other tastes and pull a signature blend together.

★★★★☆

My 'Stressful afternoon but I need to stay focused' tea.

I got this as a Christmas/Birthday gift for my grandfather. It's his favorite tea and he really enjoyed it!

★★★★★

I got this specifically to blend with spearmint to make Moroccan Mint tea. I love the combination! Classic green tea flavor with slight minty finish...wonderful iced too!

Decent tea, tastes a bit bitter to my taste compared to sencha or kukicha.

Green tea is the only category of tea that I've never managed to like, no matter how much I've tried to over the years. Expressing this to fellow tea snobs usually gets the same recommendation every time (double when they learn that lapsang souchong is in my top five teas): try gunpowder!

Having now done so, I'll be honest: I actually 'get' this less than the usual green tea. I don't review most of my green tea samples--always added to a purchase on a whim in the hopes that *this time*, greens'll click for me--because I feel as though it's unfair to them, when it's truly not the tea's fault; I don't like seaweed or grass tones all that much, and that's a lot of the appeal of greens from what I understand. The thing is, I at least intellectually understand that. Gunpowder feels like the worst of all worlds: not great as a green (but with all the green notes I dislike) because it's too smokey, not great as a smokey tea (even though it overwhelms all of the subtle notes the tea could otherwise have) because it's too green, and not, in the end, a coherent experience for me one way or the other. Gunpowder is one of the few greens I don't know if I can imagine *anyone* liking, though it clearly has its fans.

Still, though, with how much it's been recommended, I'm left more disappointed than usual.

Very nice. Earthy delicate taste. I little tricky to get the right temp water (at least with my current water heater). Only downside is that its easy to burn.

I first tried this tea in Italy a couple years back. I stocked up the moment I saw that it was available here. It's got a really distinctive smoky flavor that isn't for everyone, but I personally enjoy.

★★★☆☆

More smoky than I personally like, but its great quality tea, and the stars I give are solely based on my tastes and do not reflect on the quality.

★★★★★

a good strong regular green tea, good for everyday drinking

Finally found a green tea that I really like and does not not cost a fortune. Thanks Adiago Teas!

Mellow, flat flavor; grounding; not sharply bitter. Goes well with strong flavored food.
