I was surprised that I really enjoyed the tea today. It was a mild mix
A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness.

I was surprised that I really enjoyed the tea today. It was a mild mix
Not my favorite tea. Too vegetal for my taste. Not something I will drink often.
I love this green tea. It’s nice plain and with a bit of honey. Earthy taste. Not grassy.
This tea was enjoyable, but a little too boring. It merely fails to stand out.
solid green tea, remarkably strong for a 2-minute steep, didnt really get any of the smokiness but that's alright
A very nicely drinkable green tea. Very smooth, not at all bitter, barely grassy. I didn't taste any smokiness at all, which is a shame, but I'd happily drink this as a nice everyday green.
I brewed the gunpowder tea for 2 minutes but wish I had brewed it for 3 minutes. It’s easy to drink. It does not have a strong flavor.
Classic green tea, smooth with just a bit of grassiness, but in a good way! I found the smokiness to be minimal. Delicious through two steeps.
A smooth wonderful green with little to no grassiness, tasted a bit sweet to me with a slight smoky finish, also fun to watch it unfurl.
Look, I'm just as shocked as you are. I don't get along with most green teas. Gunpowder, though... we can be friends. Not the 'I'll enjoy your company when I can't avoid it and then be glad when it's over' kind of 'friend' - the actual 'come over anytime and I mean it' kind of friend. It was not at all grassy or vegetal, full of mineral and smokiness.
I've decided that green tea is like Sauvignon Blanc wine. Some styles are just too grassy. But they CAN be produced in a lean, mineral-driven style, such as from the Loire Valley. Those, I like. Gunpowder is the Loire version of a green tea. Bring it on.
Steeped 2 min @ 175º.
I didn't smell much from the dry tea. 2 min @ 160. I was overwhelmed with my first sip, extremely floral. It was so strongly floral that I powered through to try a second steep, hoping for improvement. 2 min @ 160 again. Still very floral, but a hint of greens this time. I love the floral of jasmine tea, but the gunpowder wasn't enjoyable. I'm disappointed because I typically enjoy green tea. I'll try it again if it's in another CommuniTEA box.
Bought this to make my own Moroccan mint blend, but it is also great by itself. Fragrant and soothing.
Excellent green tea. A little goes a long way because the leaves unfurl while steeping.
My go to hot tea. Mild, smokey flavor is smooth and soothing. I have been drinking this tea since 2011.
A classic and refreshing green tea, robust and flexible enough for most afternoons. I also enjoyed adding a bit of spearmint
I love this tea! It has such a delicate flavor and goes so well with a bit of sugar. It's such a relaxing tea to have in the afternoon after a meal.
I enjoyed this selection in the best sellers box. I ordered a bag and it has become my new morning go to cup. Nothing fancy just bolder than regular green tea.
A great green tea to have on hand. I prefer to brew this “grandpa style”. Meaning you skip the strainer and just have the leaves in the glass. 5g of leaf usually yields 3 cups of tea for me.
a straightforward green tea with a faint smokiness. leaves a bit of powder behind but it isnt an issue. very good on its own and as a base for blends
I’m new to green tea having tried other green teas only a few times before and being turned off by the grassiness. This tea is mellow and delicious. I don’t know all the proper terminology yet, but It feels very round and smooth in my mouth. I steeped it a couple more times and enjoyed those just as much. I’ll be buying more of this and trying some other green teas too. I’m a convert to green!
Gunpowder is the work horse of green teas. It has enough body to stand up to breakfast and enough flavor to drink all by itself, and yet it's simple enough that you can just drink a ton of it all day without tiring of the flavor. A little vegetal, a little grassy, a hint of smoke.
Really great everyday drinker. Live watching the little wrapped up leaves unfurl. Usually steep 3 times.
There is a beautiful richness to this tea. I enjoy the lightly smoky and woodsy notes in this green tea.
great tea,
refreshing with great aroma,
would definitely recommend
bought it second time already
After finishing the sample I am updating my review to 3 out 5 stars. There are large amounts of particles that get past my tea infuser every time. Flavor wise this is still a 4 but the overall experience loses a star because you have to wait for the ridiculous amounts of super fine particles to settle to the bottom before drinking.
There is some smokiness in the dried tea leaves but not in the tea itself once once it's brewed. Subtle hints of mint flavor although that might just be a subliminal suggestion mentioned in the product description itself for Moroccan mint tea. I accidentally used boiling hot water on this tea the first time but the end result still turned out fine.
Be quick with this one! It steeps quickly and can get bitter if left too long- something I'm quite bad at admittedly. But when the instructions are followed it's quite refreshing! I like it on it's own but I also like to add some rose flavor to it from other teas. if you have some!
Great for your every day cup of green tea. Perfect caffeine level for a mid-day pick-me-up. My go-to
It's a good green tea. The flavor is well rounded, and always hits the spot. I don't think it's anything very exciting though. Pick it up if you are looking for a reliable, well tasting green tea.
Adagio did a good job bringing this one to us. I steep a little longer because I like the stronger flavor of gunpowder tea. It has a smokiness to it but is not bitter to me.It is one of my favorite green teas unsweetened..it’s one of,if not the best I’ve had that I can remember
Way too smoky for me. I couldn’t get through the first cup and ended up throwing it out. Fortunately I started with just a sample
My tea cabinet feels incomplete without gunpowder in it; the strong, slightly smoky flavor is perfect and the process of steeping, watching the rolled leaves unfurl, oddly meditative. I love to make an extra-strong batch and serve it iced with a little bit of honey. Hot, it's a perfect tea on its own or with a meal.
My all-time favorite green tea! This will always be my top choice when it comes to green tea because of it's energizing flavor profile. Gunpowder is well worth trying if you've never had it.
I didn't care for green tea before this but gunpowder has really opened me up to it :) im not sure if id calll it smoky, but it has a nice, vegetal flavor that became addictive to me... it also lasts quite awhile!
Delicious green tea, I use this to make Moroccan mint tea! With fresh mint leaves it makes a very refreshing morning cup of tea :)
Brews a gorgeous golden color! the smell is a bit more green than I expected, a very faint smoky scent is present but understated. The taste is light in the smokiness as well, but has an almost buttery, savory taste to it. It has a slight green flavor, but is also not overpowering like in other green teas (I'm not a fan of the grassiness of green teas, and I would not call this "grassy" at all) It has a slight drying mouth feel at the end of each sip. I wish more smokiness was present, but my kettle decided it didn't want to heat past 171 today, so I brewed it cooler than recommended (maybe that's why?). Even though it doesn't have as much smokiness as I expected from a gunpowder, it's very nice. It doesn't need anything added to it, lots of flavor as is. Next will brew at the recommended 180 degrees. All in all very tasty.
My husband and I love this green tea and enjoy it every morning! We also find that the second steep grants the same lovely flavor. Mild, refreshing and cozy!
This immediately became my “house green tea”. I love this just brewed hot without any sweetener but I can see it being great with honey.
This one was better than the green dragon with a much lighter but still strong taste. I also love the way the tea looks like little pebbles also great with honey.
High quality gunpowder. It’s a little bit smokey and doesn’t have excessive bitterness.
This is a good morning tea and for fasting. I like the nice round flavor. It's not grassy and is nice for the full temperature range.
The Wife loves this tea just bought more today! Perfect way to start the day
This is easily my favorite green tea. It’s savory and delicious, without being grassy at all. I love it!
Smells vegetal and grassy, but the flavor is a light and fresh mineral taste with a notable smokiness. Good for multiple re-steeps-- the smokiness fades in later cups. The initial smoke flavor is a little too strong for my tastes, but it is still a pretty good tea.
My daily go-to. I combine with Adagio Spearmint to make Moroccan Mint (though I don’t add sweetener). Great price, great tea!
this is hands-down my favorite unflavored green tea. i’m not much of a green tea drinker, mind you— i usually prefer flavored blacks and occasionally herbals, and typically if i drink any green tea it’s one with lots of different ingredients, but this one is just perfect. i also make my own blends, and if i want a green tea base for an otherwise herbal blend, this is my go-to. highly recommend!
I had never heard of this tea before, and it was another one of those sent by Adagio as a free sample. I admit I was a bit leery when I read the name but, I thought, let's give it a go! Another pleasant surprise from Adagio and, it's green tea! I brewed a cup for my husband, and he likes it too!
My go to for non flavored tea. Like better than Earl Gray. Has a nice balanced, smooth flavor. :)
I don't hate it, I don't love it, but overall not smokey enough for me. Is a solid green though.
I drink this almost every morning. It’s a nice entry green tea that steeps well. I only steep it 2x max. My favorite is mixing it with herbal or spices (anise, cardamom, mint, etc.)
Very 2d tasting. Just a generic tasting green tea with a smokey taste and smell. It's a good gunpowder tea. Is it my favorite green tea? No. Is it good at what it does? Yes. It's just a subtle green smokey taste. Very simple and tasty. That basic taste is known to pair well with mint. I prefer it to be on its own though.
