Roanoke Island. Colony established off the coast of what is now North Carolina in 1585. A ship sailed back to England for supplies. When the ship returned after many delays in 1590, all of the colonists had disappeared. There is much speculation about what happened to the 117 colonists, but no definitive answers to this day.
