On December 4, 1872, the Mary Celeste was discovered drifting and abandoned in the Atlantic off the Azores Islands. Her cargo was intact, the vessel was sea-worthy, and the crews personal belongings were still on the ship. The lifeboat and the entire crew, plus the Captains wife and daughter, were missing. Salvage hearings were held that brought forth possible scenarios including foul play, mutiny, leaking cargo or insurance fraud. But, in the end, no explanation as to the disappearance of every person aboard has ever been firmly established. And none were ever seen or heard from again.
