This green tea is warm and nutty. Excellent for the fall, but I tend to enjoy clearer green teas during the rest of the year.
Green tea from Japan that is rendered brown by roasting Bancha (a summer crop tea, harvested after Sencha) tea leaves. An Adagio customer favorite, with a toasty nutty flavor and slightly mesquite note. Earthy and warm quality, soothing finish.

This green tea is warm and nutty. Excellent for the fall, but I tend to enjoy clearer green teas during the rest of the year.
this tea is great its low caffeine means you can enjoy this tea any time of the day what with its soothing flavor. Goes great with Amber sugar crystals to give it a note of Caramel flavor
Pleasant aroma when you open the bag and a light taste.
I usually purchase flavored teas, but I really enjoyed the natural sweetness of hojicha. It reminds me of the green teas I sometimes get in restaurants with sesame seeds sprinkled in the cup.
Good Hoji :]
No complaints here
I love this for making a bowl of O-chazuke, normally for my breakfast!!! It's roasty flavor is perfect for rice!
I tried with several hojicha from different companies but Adagio's is the best!
This has a very strong woody taste which I don't really like. It's ok but I won't order it again.
I did get a sense of the 'caramel' described, but I also found this tea reminiscent of seaweed (not entirely unpleasantly).
Not my favorite hojicha, but definitely good - arguably very good, for the price. The flavor of hojicha can be surprising if you aren't used to it - it's not much like most green teas.
Between this and genmai cha I think I just love thrift. Nutty, roasty, smelling of mesquite and leather, I love this tea, and find it easy drinking with a sweet almost chocolate finish.
It has a casual friendly aroma that is not offensive. Roasty and goes well with meals too.
Strong, earthy, and woodsy. It's easy to forget this is technically a green. If green tea's all you like, pass over this one. Otherwise, check it out. It's pretty good.
Hojicha is the first green tea that will stand up to bacon, eggs and toast. Wonderful toasty, nutty, roasted flavor. Would be a great beginner green tea for someone new to green teas.
I enjoyed this tea a lot. It has a wonderful roasty-toasty flavor with hints of earthiness and even caramel undertones. This tea is pretty bulky, so I measured it by volume (2.5 grams to a cup of water). It can easily oversteep though so keep a close eye on it. Very fun, the stems inside were actually an interesting visual aspect of the tea.
Strong and earthy for a green, but had a seaweed background flavor that I didn't really care for.
Not a fan of the earthy green tea, I like my greens to be light and refreshing
Tasted a bit like wood. I think I definitely prefer a grassy taste over the smokey taste, though. It was interesting to try, however, as I'd never seen a green tea so brown.
I accidentally ordered the 8oz bag instead of the tea bags and am very happy I did.
Toasted taste, a hint of chocolate. Great choice if you're tired of grassy greens.
Love hojicha. I must admit, I have had better hojicha from other vendors - this hojicha seems as though it could use some more roasting. That said, it is reasonably priced and always stocked in my cupboard. Very earthy with a strong roast flavor. Seems to help digestion as well.
love that is has a woodsy/smoky undertone but isn't overpowering.
I just love this, glad I stumbled across it! Really a great pick-me-up.
Hojicha is my favorite evening tea, since the roasting process naturally lowers the caffeine content but still offers a robust flavor. I could down cups and cups of this tea!
Good distinct taste. I cannot put my finger on the taste but I like it. However, the distinct taste is too mild for my liking.
The toasted flavor is very intense. It really overpowers the tea. Did not enjoy.
Honestly, this is one I didn't like. I was cautious of the impending toastieness, so I brewed it at a cooler temp than I otherwise might have for a bancha. Nevertheless, the toasted flavor hit me over the head like a mallet. It's the same flavor quality that I really enjoy in Formosa Oolong 8, but it is much more intense here. Beneath the toasty exterior, the distinct flavor of Japanese green tea is present, but for me, the combination was just unpalatable.
This tea wasn't really my favorite. Because it's lightly roasted I think it reminded me too much of genmai cha which I definitely do not care for.
This tea is much earthier than most Japanese green teas I've tried. The taste has a faint hint of seaweed and nutty undertones. Hojicha is a great choice for those who do not like the grassy, vegetable taste that a lot of Japanese green teas have.
This tea has a mild, toasty flavor, with a very subtle lingering aroma that is sweet, almost like strawberries. That might sound terrible (I'm not usually a fan of fruit or sweet flavors in tea, at all--even jasmine is too much for me), but it's very subtle and pleasant. This would be a nice tea for everyday sipping.
This is a good tea, but be prepared for a dark tea that is bold. The nutty and roasted flavors are very unique. I would say a sample of this is a good idea before you go in on 1.5 or 8 ounces. I have found in sharing this you either like it or hate it.
The first time I tasted this in store I wasn't quite sure I liked it. As soon as I took my second sip though I really felt the full flavor and richness of this tea. This tea to me is a great start out tea to someone that is new to loose leaf tea.
this wonderfully robust, very deep green tea was absolutely fantastic. I drank this hot while enjoying my hookah, and feel I will probably do so again on a regular basis.
I grew up drinking a lot of tea from Asia, and hojicha is one of my favorites, but I didn't like the flavor of the batch I received. No matter how much leaves I added I didn't get that 'depth' in flavor that I love.
This has a nutty roast taste to it. I loved hojicha when I lived in Japan, and waited forever for Adagio to get it back in stock. I was not disappointed!
Really liked the toasted flavor of this tea. I drink this first thing in the morning and then drink regular green tea the rest of the day.
This tea has a very nice earthy and nutty flavor. If Genmai Cha is a favorite of yours, I would recommend this as well. A very toasty-warm feeling tea.
I wasn't too big a fan of this on it's own but when mixed with the Ginseng Green it's amazing.
Hojicha is getting harder to find, this one is good and better than most. A must have for me especially first thing in the morning.
Nutty, Flavorful, a little Earthy---it looks like the floor of a wooded area but turns into a healthy green tea treat with water!
I bought an 8 oz bag of this tea and I'm not sorry I did. I love the toasty warm flavor of this tea. This has become my daily tea. I love to drink it all day, whether it be to start my day, for a mid-afternoon break, or a soothing cup at the end of the day.
Love the roast-y character of this tea
I really liked the smoky flavor, but I guess I prefer lighter green teas
I could drink this tea every day and never get tired of it. It's very smooth and the toasty, nutty flavor is never overpowering
A fantastic-tasting green tea with a wonderful fragrance.
The taste reminded me of a cross between nori and tea. Not a favorite so I'm glad I only ordered the sample pack. I drank mine sweetened with stevia. Maybe it would taste better unsweetened?
Pretty good green, particularly good for you if you don't like greens. Very roasted scent, nice gentle cup.
I loved this tea. great taste, unique, very earthy.
had a very hard time with this one at first, but stuck it out because it's naturally low in caffeine . The unbrewed smell reminds me of chickory, which I do not like at all. However, it doesn't taste like chickory. It is mild, forgiving in that it is hard to make too strong, either by quantity or brewing time.
A little 'burned' for a green tea, but I think that's the point. Tasty without being heavy.
This tea is very dark, almost looks burnt. And if you steep it too long, you can taste it. But if you steep it for just the right amount of time (no more than 2 mins) it's got the right amount of pleasantly charred taste (not quite smokey, that's not the word).
