this is the green tea i've been looking for, i used to get a real cheap green from the grocery store a while back, it was real finicky, but had this splendid flavour if you steeped it juuuuuust right, sorta squashy, nutty, autumn leaf-like. it was great, until you let it sit longer than 35-40 seconds ( i'm not kidding) then it became so bitter you couldn't drink it.
they stopped carrying this tea and switched to an even lower quality green, i have yet to figure out how thats possible, but ti doesn't matter, this tea has what the cheap-o bags i used love had in spades, plus no where near as harsh tones from brewing.
out of the bag it smells like pumpkin guts, which i like, and that continues when it's brewed as you get a roasted pumpkin seed like nuttiness from it.
all in all i absolutely adore this tea, i see it as my go too green

A very nice and earthy green tea. A little more substantial than a sencha, and has no floral notes. Quite nice.

This is one of my favorite teas to have straight, not in a blend. There's definitely a woody vibe here, and it isn't as strong as some other green teas like gunpowder, so you don't have to worry too much about oversteeping by accident. Or, if you just want a smoother, less concentrated tea, this would be the one for you.

Wow! I didn't expect to like this brown wilty tea as much as I do. It tastes a lot like the popped rice from genmaicha - earthy, slightly nutty, with a touch of grassy green tea flavor.

A solid, good green tea. One of my favorite varieties and even better as a loose leaf.

This is excellent. I can really taste the charcoal-like flavor.

If you love the smokey flavor of a good genmai, the hojicha should be your next tea. It's like drinking smoked branches, but trust me, that's a good thing. The only downside is the tannins leave you a little more thirsty than when you started.

This was my first time trying Hojicha. I really liked it's flavor profile. It has a sweet grassy matcha taste mixed in with a bit of smokey-roasted flavor. I just wish that part was a bit stronger.

Lovely tea. Quite subtle, but very drinkable hot or iced.

Nice and roast-y green tea flavor. I'm more familiar with genmai cha and mugicha, but this has such a great toasty green tea flavor. Delicious with food and by itself, I can't wait to try more of Adagio's green tea selections.

This is a very flavorful green tea. It almost tastes like a black tea. Very nutty, but still with some Japanese green tea flavor.

Darker green tea, with a different flavor then majority of green teas, it's really enjoyable!

This is great green tea. It's a nice alternative to gunpowder or sweeter green tea since it offers its own satisfying taste.

I'll admit that this tea smells kind of weird when it steeps. But gosh, the nuttiness is so great, especially for a green tea. Great to mix with other teas, either other green teas or even some herbal ones!

One of my favorite green teas. It has a bold summery taste and is perfect served hot or cold. (I lean towards serving this cold, as it's a refreshing summer tea).

Surprisingly brown in color, though short on reds. Robust roast scent and flavor with veg hints early and late. Sweeter finish than I expected and nice roast flavor throughout.
I find many Oolong teas lack the roast flavor I like. This tea hits the balance of roast and green perfectly - in fact, more green than I usually like, but very pleasantly offset by the roast flavor.

A very nice dinner tea, reminds me of the local sushi restaurant tea. The rice gives it a nice, roasted taste.

This is... some odd-tasting tea. It is certainly complex enough. it's got a basic grass flavor with contrasting strains of 'burnt' and 'cool.' Some people are talking about the 'nutty' flavor. I can see it, but to me it just... tastes burnt. I would fear I'd oversteeped it but it tastes just like the dry leaves smell. Certainly an interesting flavor, but really not my personal preference.

Hojicha is as fun to say as it is to drink. A tasty, earthy tea. It has an interesting smell, but it's delicious.

I really enjoy hojicha. This one is pretty good, though I have had a better hojicha before. I would buy it again.

This was given to me as a free sample. I like it. Relatively simple, smokey flavor. I may order some more of this one day.

An ideal autumn tea, hojicha's earthy tones produced in the firing of bancha (common tea harvested in the summer) lends itself to increasingly chill outdoors. I made my hojicha with a full large tea glass (sold through Adagio as well), which produced a very delicate flavor compared to the much stronger, harsher tastes found in marketed hojicha in Japan. That being said, I would consider using a little more than a single teaspoon, as the flavor's overt delicacy may be too delicate for the average tea drinker. In this, it's also a bit less suited toward resteeping - consider steeping longer.

I had this once many years ago, didn't remember the name, only what it looked like, and the flavor. Pleasantly surprised to find it here. Nutty and earthy, and very unique!

It brewed up very light in color, but it still had a very strong nutty flavor. Reminds me of the smell of autumn leaves, and tastes best with a small spoon of sugar.

This tea has a subtle green tea taste with some nutty overtomes in my opinion. It has a little bit of that grassy taste is over steeped. Overall a good green tea.

its alright, however not my favorite tea. Grassy taste, different than most green teas.

I've had a few other hojicha's before but Adagio's was the best. It is very smooth and the smoky flavor is perfect.

Love this. Got me super interested in other roasted teas.

I'm somewhere between ok and good on this one. it has a strange toasted flavor i'm not sure I like. It also smells like dirt, so that's hard to get around...I've never been overly fond of Japanese green teas so that might be part of the problem.

Toasty and light with a flavor reminiscent of plain popcorn. Has an interesting sweet, mouth-watering finish.

It tasted terrible the first time I brewed it after a couple of tries it got a little better but the flavor was still a bit off .
★★★★★
Has a nice earthy flavor. The flavor that keeps coming to mind is brown rice. Very mellow and tasty.
★★★★★
this is so lovely! I agree with the other reviewers who say it reminds them of nori snacks... I'll definitely be buying again.
★★★★☆
I feel It's worth mentioning that hojicha is mostly tea stalks...and it makes me wonder why we haven't been drinking them for a long time. This does not taste like green tea - instead, its woodsy, roasted, and a little savory almost, with a strong finish most call caramel, but I think is more like steeped cocoa. Either way, definitely worth a shot

The smell in the bag nearly knocked me over. Kind of sour. The taste when brewed is intense, but not unpleasant. It's earthy and tastes like a combination of seaweed and hay. This could grow on me.
★★★☆☆
not too special to me. I like green tea but this one didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for
★★★★★
Hojicha is one of my favorite teas, so I was pleased that this one lives up to my expectations. Nice and roasty with a bit of a nutty aftertaste.

I love using this tea to flesh out lighter blends. This is the best of both worlds: still some grassiness of green tea with a delicious nutty, toasted overtone. In the bag you can see it is clearly a roasted type of green, and it smells like dry grass in the best way possible.
★★☆☆☆
Maybe I was expecting it to be similar to a slightly roasted Sencha, but it was too nutty (almost like coffee)I guess for my taste.

It was interesting to try, but it tastes a lot like nori and just doesn't work for me.
