A very nice shift from a standard green tea with a nuttier or maltier taste. Great with meals!
Green tea from Japan that is rendered brown by roasting Bancha (a summer crop tea, harvested after Sencha) tea leaves. An Adagio customer favorite, with a toasty nutty flavor and slightly mesquite note. Earthy and warm quality, soothing finish.

A very nice shift from a standard green tea with a nuttier or maltier taste. Great with meals!
Hojicha tea has an earthy and nutty taste compared to other green tea. It's prefect for someone who is enjoys a strong full-body tea.
An interesting tea that is similar to another sencha, but with a nuttier taste. I like it!
Hojicha is great for an occasional variety tea, but isn't necessarily one of my daily favorites.
This is amazing. Smoky, sort of nutty taste but very mild. I used to get this at the Japanese grocery store in bag form. This is definitely superior.
This and kukicha. These are my go-to greens, and Adagio has my heart with this one.
A truly enjoyable hojicha tea. I keep this one at work to enjoy the rich, soothing tea.
This is a very unique green tea. It has a mild smokiness to it and tastes almost like a mild black tea. Because of this, it almost has an 'autumn' kind of flair to it. I would recommend this tea if you truly want to try a green tea that is unlike any other.
This is one of my favourite green teas this site has to offer. I started with the Japanese tea sampler.
A new favorite, so savory and unexpected. The umami is strong with this one.
I like the grassy, slightly earthy taste of the Hojicha very much. I'd describe it as medium in terms of robustness of taste: lighter than puer, heavier than most green teas.
Just got back from Japan w/ my husband and discovered hojicha over there. This tea is bringing us back to our trip in the best way! It's not a typical green tea - it has a reddish sort of tone and a slightly sweet flavor to it. We really like to drink it in the evening after dinner since it doesn't have too much caffeine.
Interesting green tea. Very woodsy, nutty, earthy and toasty. Not quite my style.
Never had green tea like this. This is my first time trying hojicha. Definitely in love. Delicious salted nut flavor, perfect for after dinner or just a late night tea.
Such a great tea. It’s super reliable. You can always count on your hojicha to make a great cup.
This tea was quite enjoyable! I greatly enjoyed the taste
That perfect toasty green tea! I actually love it on hot afternoons for some reason. Really though, a quality hojicha.
Personally, I quite liked this one, but it is straight up like drinking a cup of toasted nori. If toasted seaweed is not your (pardon the expression) cup of tea, this may not be a fave for you. I definitely need to be in the right mood for it.
Yum! This tea satisfies my craving for something salty or savory. It smells and tastes like delicious roasted sunflower seeds. Very easy to drink this lovely green tea from Japan without adding anything to the cup. Great on it's own!
Fantastic. This is my current go-to. It has a wonderful roasted flavor. Brings back good memories of a trip to Japan
I liked this green tea, Be careful not to oversteep it or it turns somewhat acidic tasting.
A nice earthy taste. Good mild green tea that doesn't call attention to itself or feel acidic.
Husband said 'it tastes like grass, with some spice'. I personally have never eaten grass, so I don't really know. I do know the initial flavor was ok, but the after flavor was somewhat flat. I think we were hoping for a spicy mexican style tea, and this really didn't meet that. As a basic tea, I would say it was OK, not fantastic, but OK.
A robust nutty flavor, perfect hot and cooled for slow afternoons! A good way to diversify your green tea collection
This is one of my go-to teas when I'm having a bad day. It's lovely both hot and cold.
I wasn t sure on Hojicha the first time I tried it, it has a mild seaweed like after taste which didn t appeal to me. On second thought I really like this, it s not like most green teas and has a really earthy, rich, toasted flavour, almost like toasted rice. It s definitely not for everyone, it is a complex tea, but if you are looking for something really different, hojicha might be for you!
I really love this green tea! It has a smoky, almost spicy taste, and is perfect for starting the morning.
On an episode of Star Trek: TNG, Data tried a drink that was green in color. When he was asked what it tasted like, he said, 'It is green.' That's what this tea tasted like without any sweeteners. With Stevia, it's pretty much the same, only sweeter. It's very grass-like and slightly bitter, but not in a bad way. It's pretty good. I like it.
Delicious toasted grass! Very savory, reminds me of oolong teas.
I really enjoy the Hojicha tea, especially when the weather is a bit cool. It has a unique toasty flavor.
Interesting flavor. Wasn't sure at first, but I actually enjoy this tea immensely.
What a wonderful aroma just as soon as the water meets the tea leaves! Good robust flavor.
I was worried I wasn't going to like this one because it's listed as having a smokey aroma (which I typically don't like), but this one was wonderful. It IS smokey, but not a super powerful smokey (like Lapsang Souchong). Really enjoyed this one.
At first sip, I said 'uh...no'...maybe too vegetal or green tasting but I tried it again and I really love it and I mean love it enough to keep ordering it. Very well formed flavor.
Really lovely, intense smoky roasted flavour! I expected a flavor closer to genmaicha from this, but it's definitely got its own separate taste and experience. I prefer the lighter, less-toasty, more typically tea-like flavor of genmaicha for everyday drinking, but I'll for sure enjoy the rest of my hojicha sample! Reminds me of a warm campfire on a fall night in the best-tasting way.
Not sure if I actually enjoyed this tea or not...
When they said earthy, they meant it. I adore this tea! If you are into robust flavors, you'll love this tea. There's something like mushrooms and dirt to it, but I mean that in the best possible way. This tea is not for everyone, but if you want to try something new or love rustic flavors, definitely give this a try!
Really good! I haven't found a good roasted green tea in a long time. Best by far!
Rather good, bit woody but also nutty was rather tasty.
This is everything I was hoping for. Nutty and complex, perfect for relaxing with after a long day.
This tea smells smoky right when you open the bag and it tastes very similar. It was great.
This is one of my favorite teas - it has a very nice nutty flavor!
Hojicha has such an unique flavour! It s toasted and nutty, but it s not as overpowering as certain black teas.
This is definitely an interesting cup of tea. Very unique. It does not have the grassy taste of a green tea, but it does have a distinct seaweed taste and aroma. I followed the suggested steeping time of two minutes, and there was absolutely zero bitterness to the tea. If you enjoy sushi rolls/seaweed, you should definitely give this tea a try!
First impression: Tastes like an oolong! Then the green notes start to shine through, complementing the roasted oolong-esque flavor to form a complex and thoroughly enjoyable cup of tea.
Deliciously roasted and nutty, and unbelievably cheap for a good Japanese green!
If you like hojicha, you buy this. Nutty and slightly caramel. Smooth.
I suppose I just don't like Hojicha. I tried to enjoy it - I attempted drinking it many times - but I could hardly make it past three sips before pouring it out. Both its flavor and scent were overpowered by a mustiness that I found unbearable. Drinking it reminded me of drinking a really bad Pu-erh from 1998 - dust upon dust upon dust. That is not to say I think there is something wrong with it; I've tried Adagio's Hojicha a few times over the years, and the taste has remained consistent. Even so, I would not recommend this for anyone who is particularly averse to earthier teas.
Delicious. Not to grassy and works at a variety of temperatures and for multiple infusions.
Hojicha looks like someone scooped a handful of twigs off the forest floor and stuck it in your tea brewer. It smells and tastes about the same, which I find fascinating! It s not a bad thing--I like earthy tasting tea.
