Josephine Baker (1906 – 1972) had a rough childhood. She eventually became a dancer and moved to Paris, France. She was in movies, and her performances led her to start the "Art Deco" movement. She became a spy during World War II, carrying messages throughout Europe. She pinned them to the insides of her clothes or wrote messages in invisible ink. After the war, she visited the U.S. and found racism and segregation in full force. Even though she became a French citizen, she still worked with activists, stood by Martin Luther King Jr, and spoke during his famous speech.
