The House stood in the middle of the clearing, bright and colourful, with a sweet, cloying scent, like mums gingerbread men, like the butterscotch lollies dad would bring for them every fortnight or so, like the one time that the family got a chocolate bar and snapped it into squares to share between them, like every good memory they had before everything fell apart. Had they been full, they might have noticed how odd it was to build a house of pastry, how the woods had gotten far too quiet, or how a slinking finger of dread dragged across them, but they had been lost for days, and their growling stomachs took up far too much to doubt anymore. They ran to the door and began to chow down.
